RG, I agree with you so very much about Red. I didn’t care much for “Child of the Moon” either, and while it did teach us a few important things about Red and her abilities, it really didn’t end up having much of a point when we failed to see much of Ruby after that. It didn’t add much or make any great distinctions about how werewolves work in this universe, so meh. Not much of a point, really. Red’s only shining moment this season in my eyes was her talk with Whale on the ledge. A very sweet moment- and I like the idea of Frankenstein and the Werewolf being buddies. They can hang out and watch old black and white horror movies that remind Whale of his high-contrast homeland. XD

As I’m fairly new to the show, I had been exposed to some fan opinions before actually settling in to watch it myself. So I knew that there was supposed to be some kind of dynamic between Mulan and Aurora and that fans liked talking about it. I felt a little disappointed by what was actually on the screen, but I’ve also realized that fans will latch on to anything (especially regarding ships, lol!) regardless of how much we actually see in canon. I didn’t dislike Aurora (I thought she was going to just whine the whole time, but she seemed genuinely interested in helping the others) but she was sort of one dimensional for me. I actually liked Mulan *less* than Aurora until the Mogwai episode. I thought her interactions with Belle were cute and more indicative of a real person with something to prove and something to protect.

I’m trying to imagine how Aurora might have been developed differently. (Also, pardon my confusion, but in early episodes Regina and Maleficent talk about how Phillip and Aurora overcame the sleeping curse. So why is Aurora asleep again at the beginning of season 2? I think my mind must have messed up somewhere.) Aurora in the animated film was a little sassy, had a lovely singing voice (par for princesses) and was raised by fairies? A bit of a curious streak. I’m trying to imagine where we could edge some fun character development in to that story.

The more I think about it, the propaganda idea is making more and more sense to me.

-The ogres we’ve seen don’t seem too chatty, hard to make a truce with them
-The ogre we have seen is pretty much a large, simple minded monster. This doesn’t seem to indicate that he is part of a unified group that could be anything like an army
-These ogres don’t indicate that they’d be the sort to launch a lasting war that goes on for years and years. I mean, then may run into a human settlement and destroy it, but it seems like if you can get out of their way, then you’re fine. It’s not like the ogres are going to hunt people down and raze their villages because someone assassinated their arch-duke.
-If there have been multiple wars, it doesn’t seem likely that it’s with ogres. The ogres seem like they have few desires food, territory to get said food, and yeah, that seems like it. Humans wouldn’t go picking a fight with them, the only reason for multiple wars would be if the humans expanded into ogre territory but that seems pretty foolish on their part
-In our history, plenty of wars have “misleading” names so sure, why not call our fight with the neighboring lands “the ogres war”? It’s simple enough to imagine a “they aren’t men, they fight like ogres” turning into an iconic line
-There has to be more to it, otherwise why didn’t the Duke just tell the Dark One “turn them all in to snails and smoosh them”? If they were fighting a neighboring land that had something they wanted (say an economic benefit of some sort) then the Duke would need the enemy to remain human as to be able to continue to provide it after the fighting had ended

..I um… may have to go amend my first “fact”.

Here would be a fine thing:
These are regular wars, men against men. They are just called “the ogre wars” as a form of propaganda, y’know to dehumanize the enemy. Sir Maurice makes the comment “Ogres are not men”. Well that seems fairly… obvious. Why say something like that unless he meant “Our enemy doesn’t fight like men”.

Just a thought to play with. I’m sure they’re actually ogres.

Thanks MysteryKat, I’m going to check out Red-Handed. I’d forgotten that Granny mentioned anything about it.

Edit: When Granny was a child her big brothers were veterans of the “Second Ogres War”. Again, this implies that that war has ended and it means that Belle’s kingdom/town/little quiet village was involved in at least OWIII

    heehee. Thanks. Likewise. ^_^7

-It may be the first one. At first I thought Rumplestiltskin’s father had abandoned the war as well but it turns out he ran from creditors, so it’s possible there wasn’t any fighting going on when Rumple was a child.

-I also think it would be the first one because Rumple is practically excited to go to war when he is enlisted. This is his big chance! If this was just the next in a long line of wars, I don’t think he or Milah would be as hopeful as they were about it. They talk about him returning so they can start a family. After he gets to the front, a soldier tells him only the wounded go home alive. Since word travels so quickly from the fighting back home, it stands to reason this would become knowledge quickly.

-I’d wager the fighting probably lasted all of Bae’s childhood, maybe with ebbs and flows. People don’t recruit children without having exhausted much of the adult male population first. However it does look like a lot of the recruitment and edicts were enacted by the Duke just to keep the peasants in check (and in fear of him)

-When he gets the Seer’s powers, she says something like “during the Ogres War” which makes it sound like 1) it’s over and 2)there isn’t one going on currently. Based on her age (mid 20’s? early 30’s) I think it’s safe to say that this event takes place very soon after Rumple loses Bae

I wonder what on earth you could offer Ogres for a truce. They don’t seem as though they can be reasoned with (as opposed to Giants) and their… shall we say “culture” seems somewhat rudimentary. I could be wrong. Maybe they’re all brilliant musicians. I imagine whatever you offer them would have to be something very basic- like territory. I don’t even think they place much value on gold etc.

Personal headcanon: Rumple’s truce is just that, a gift of territory to the Ogres. The *Duke’s* territory. 😀

This seems as good a place as any for this particular musing, but I went back and watched the flashback bits of “Manhattan”. At the end, the seer’s words are a little different than I’ve been remembering them.

“You will be reunited with your son and it will come in a most unexpected way.”
    “How?”
“A boy, a young boy will lead you to him. But beware Rumplestiltskin, he is more than he appears. he will lead you to what you seek. But there will be a price; the boy will be your undoing.”

I like to poke at the way particular things are phrased, especially in a show like this because the writers are quite clever about things like word choice and hidden meanings. I’m wondering now if the Seer was talking about two different things. The boy (I think we’re all agreed this is Henry) will lead Rumple to both his son and “what he seeks”. I realize Rumple was preoccupied with his search for Bae, but it’s interesting to ponder what else he could be seeking. Seeing how the character has evolved and his internal conflict in Storybrooke with Belle/Lacey and trying to “be good” maybe the Seer was referring to something Rumplestiltskin would be seeking in the future- something he didn’t even know he would want when she made her prediction. Maybe “what he seeks” will actually *be* his undoing, in a manner of speaking.

“We Might As Well Be Strangers” by Keane is a great one. Apparently people agree with me as I found a few music videos using it.

Just curious- do you happen to know when this scene fits in to events?

Hmm. That theory makes plenty of sense honestly (aside from exactly how she managed to contain that giant egg within her human form… if she could manipulate it within her so she doesn’t explode, why couldn’t she remove it… unless she didn’t want to….). It definitely fits with the logic of the show. I guess I just wish she had had some kind of event where she made the choice to change, rather than being well not brainwashed but… heartwashed? Is that a thing? Can we make that a thing? I’m sure Snow would appreciate it.

Haha, I feel like so many of the characters on your list are ones that fans “love to hate” as it were. We despise them for their actions (or inaction) and their motives- but that also makes them exciting to talk about.

To be honest, most of the people on the second list just failed to make an impression on me. “Aw you’re sweet. Ugh, you’re awful. Hah, like the leather jacket” was about as far as I got.

I guess Graham is the one that made the most of an impression on me, just because we see the most of him. To be honest, I think I was less sad to see the loss of the character than the loss of the information he’d just obtained. I could tell that he was meant to be a favorite for the audience, but I also felt like I didn’t get the chance to know him- possibly because during his time in Storybrooke he’s under Regina’s thumb so he barely knows himself. I did enjoy seeing him come back for the flashback scenes, however. Those little reveals did make me smile and made the world feel just a little more cohesive as a whole. Yay! Continuity!

I’m looking forward to the comic exploring the relationship between him and Regina. I feel like given a bit more story I could come to like him a lot.
