ParticipantA lot, and I mean a *lot* of my free time is spent on Japanese street fashion, namely lolita. I’m the moderator of my local community so that’s a lot of event planning and promotion and stuff. It’s kind of great because all of the ladies in our group all have their different styles and are a lot of fun. I’ve been really into collecting fairy tale themed dresses and prints- I have quite a few. (And several of the Japanese brands have released fairy tale themed prints this summer, so I guess that’s where my money is going. Oh nooooo)
Also, it’s a less active fandom these days- but the specific part of Harry Potter fandom knows as “Wizard Rock”. Essentially bands that sing about Harry Potter. I am a crazy fan of “Harry and the Potters” and have even housed a basement concert in the past. ^_^
I also like some kind of weird video games. I’m a fan of Pop ‘n’ Music, which is a music rhythm game that never found much market outside of Japan. I think there was a wii version but it was terrible. ~_~;;

ParticipantWow- color me impressed by all of your costumes! I dabble in cosplay a bit- after I finish my current projects I think I’m going to try some OUAT designs. I’m stoked!

ParticipantRumplesgirl I’m so glad you brought up the voice thing! After watching both “Skin Deep” and “Lacey” one after the other it struck me how much more of a caricature Rumplestiltskin is in the flashback scenes of “Lacey”. He is trying so hard to *play* the part of a villain. You can hear it in his voice in the carriage, it’s much more impish and nasal. This is also evidenced in the scene where he talks about his reputation for skinning those who steal from him. He’s working very hard to develop and maintain the persona of the Dark One (which is a little weird, because he clearly does have a reputation- otherwise Belle’s father wouldn’t have known to seek him out). His scenes in “Skin Deep” have a little bit of this (the chipped cup/quip scene is a good example) but he definitely mellows out as they get to know one another. By the time he tells Belle to go to town, he’s not pretending to be anything (except perhaps less hurt than he really would be by her not coming back).
If these episodes had been produced in reverse order, it would be easy to think that Carlyle was just laying it on a bit thick in his portrayal, but let’s face it – he’s amazing and he’s had plenty of practice playing the role in a very nuanced way. What’s really happening is he’s playing Rumple who’s playing a villain – and Carlyle is a far better actor than Rumple. XD I think I even recall someone’s reaction to the sneak peek of the two of them in carriage, the fan had no idea what was going on with the accents and thought they were watching a completely different show. In a sense they were- it was the “Rumplestiltskin is an Over The Top Bad Guy” show. 🙂
I think examining Rumplestiltskin’s speech and mannerisms is probably a very reliable tool as far as gauging a sequence of events.

ParticipantI know that the hood Belle wears is made of the same fabric as the curtains, but isn’t it possible (although less poetic) that the curtains didn’t get nailed up until after Belle had arrived? If she arrived in say… fall, maybe he nailed them up later (not fond of winter, maybe) and she tried to take them down in the spring? I realize it’s not as cute as if they’d been there for years, but it’s still physcally possible. Maybe there were just extra curtains lying around somewhere for that cloak. XD
I’m now going to spend time speculating as to why Rumplestiltskin would hate the winter in particular. >.>
edit to daybreak_fairy: Hey, Belle herself describes love as being “many layered”. So maybe one of those layers is “You’re not so bad” followed by “What on earth is wrong with you” and just underneath that is “You’re just a sweetheart aren’t you” and then “What did I ever see in you”? Of course the only layer the fans are concerned about is the one just under the leather pants. 😉

ParticipantThis is just a thought I had this evening, but now that Regina knows about the beans and has likely put together the pieces of the puzzle regarding the Charming family’s plans to return to FTL- what if Hook’s help is to take her and Henry to Neverland, a place where her son could be her “little boy” forever?

ParticipantI think the Rumplestiltskin’s incarnation of the Dark One is the only one who has ever been about “deals”- and I think that it wasn’t a… shall we say “motif” of his until after he lost Baelfire. Zozo brought up the word deal for the first time, and then the deal with Baelfire was the first one Rumple made as the Dark One. After that, I think it became very important to him to teach others about the hidden costs of using magic.
I was thinking about this in relation to the agreement with Belle’s father. When Rumple showed up at their palace to help with their “little war”, I don’t know that he had a cost in mind. He knew what the King wanted (as it was outlined in the plea for help) but I think the decision to demand Belle as payment was one he made there on the spot. Sure, she was pretty to look at and he could think of all sorts of things for her to do around the castle, but as it was pointed out he wasn’t looking for love (at the time) and I think it came to him as a genuine surprise that any sort of personable relationship formed between them. It seems a bit more likely that when he demanded Belle he was doing so to teach Maurice a lesson. He could easily see that she was precious to her father, and she would be the biggest “price” he could ask. Belle was also clearly an unexpected “cost”- since her father assumed that Rumple would want gold etc. It was a cruel lesson, “You can magically save the people you love by giving up the one you love the most.” but at that moment there was no other reason for him to ask for Belle.

ParticipantI don’t think Gold could just say he wasn’t going to use magic like Regina did at the beginning of the season. It would go just about as well for him as it did for her. Also, I think since we’ve already seen a character make that sort of promise and break it, we’ll hopefully not be in for a repeat of that story. I think instead he’ll make some sort of choice to have the magic forcibly taken from him. So it will be a choice, and it will be in favor of choosing Bae, Belle, Henry and goodness for a change, but after the choice is made there won’t be a way for him to “slip up” like Regina did.
True facts about the ladies on this show! And more often than not, they’re not just rescuing themselves, they’re rescuing the guys! Belle does this on multiple accounts. She saves her kingdom (are we pretty much certain that she’s a princess, not just a lady/daughter of a military leader?), saves Phillip from his curse, and I’m certain we’ll eventually see her save Rumplestiltskin. Not bad for a bookworm. ^_^

ParticipantPriceofMagic you’re definitely right about the price Regina is going to pay in regard to Henry. Dash those hidden fees!
Even though Rumple is technically doing what David suggested, I think this is definitely a “letter over spirit” of the law sort of thing. Gold knew exactly what David meant, which is why he gave him a skeptical look. He knew at that moment that David didn’t realize what he was saying, he was just offering generic advice. This would be great, except Belle and Rumplestiltskin don’t have what I’d call a “generic” relationship. (Well nobody in the show does, really…) Obviously the show has a time limit, but in a perfect fictional world, David would have actually asked a few questions about the nature of their relationship before saying something like that.
Should Neal or anyone else confront Gold about his actions regarding Lacey, I don’t think “David told me to!” is going to garner much sympathy from anyone. However, I doubt this is all going to culminate in a conversation- it’s probably going to be a much more dramatic sequence of events. Time is short! We’ve got to get it sorted! XD
