As an Irish person hearing Sarah Bolger’s accent is really refreshing. Being exposed to more heteronormativity is not. Poor Mulan.
I completely agree with your issue with heteronormativity. That is why even though I was happy with that plot development (“Quite a Common Fairy” is, in fact, my favorite season 3 episode so far, for various reasons), I don’t like how it is doomed to go nowhere. If Mulan were a male, Aurora would either feel the same way and would leave Phillip for him or there would be a love triangle (or, at the very least, Aurora would know how Mulan feels), but because Mulan is a female, we get the classic tragically doomed case of love that will either not last or is unrequited. It is an age-old method of storytelling; heterosexual people get their happy endings, while people of other forms of sexuality are either ignored as if they don’t exist or are doomed to ultimate loneliness. It is also why (even though I don’t want to rehash this from months ago) this podcast caused such a controversy amongst its listeners because of its treatment toward this episode and also lost me as a listener; in what was supposed to be a FULL discussion of the episode, Daniel, Jenny, and Jeremy completely ignored this particular plot development and did not even mention it because they knew how stupid it would sound to say that it doesn’t belong in a “family friendly” series that features violence, murder, the use of dark magic, sex that is used as a manipulative tool, and so forth. I could not overlook that and haven’t listened to them since, although I do, on occasion, visit the forum to keep in touch with fellow fans of the series. I now listen to a podcast called THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR which is hosted by two wonderfully fun and open-minded women who, amongst other traits, are completely shipper-friendly.

He’s 18. Does that make it any better? Also, small moment of pride for me during the EAST coast airing of 305
He is five years younger than I am (I am twenty-three), but I don’t even care; he is gorgeous!
thelostpassengerParticipantWell, since I’m twice his age, I’m not going to comment on hotness, but I will say he’s excellent. Not maybe people can go against Robert Carlyle, a man known for his eccentric roles, and come out the creepier one in the exchange. That takes talent. He’s really menacing. If they had miscast the role, it could have been a disaster. How can a teen be menacing to Rumplestiltskin? But it really works.
The catch, of course, is that he is not a teen; he merely looks like one. He is actually centuries old.
thelostpassengerParticipantI didn’t say that I thought Mulan loved Phillip. Just thought the article would be an interesting post.
I’m sorry; I didn’t realize that that was a link. I just read the article now, which is, indeed, interesting, but I still disagree with the writer.

I am already practically obsessed with him! He is extremely talented, and you can tell that he gets into the role on a very deep level. He is one of the finest actors on the show right now, and he is nailing the Peter Pan character! And yes, he is also delicious eye-candy!
thelostpassengerParticipantWe don’t know that; all that has been confirmed is that she loves Aurora, but we don’t know if she has ever had feelings for Phillip. I don’t think that it is important one way or the other, though. All that we need to know is that she loves Aurora; we don’t need to assign a label to it.

I’m not sure what you mean? Which part isn’t true? I said stalker like traits, not that she was a stalker. And all the evidence I pointed to is in the show. And I don’t think she ruined Robin’s life at all. And I think Robin will tell her the exact same thing. I think Robin is grateful that Regina didn’t approach him–not because they aren’t meant to be together but because out of it came his son and his wife, both of whom he loves deeply. He will be grateful for the time he had with Marian and even more grateful for his child.
Robin is no doubt grateful to have Roland, but I can’t imagine that he is too happy to have lost Roland’s mother. The point is that if he had met Regina and had fallen in love with her instead, he might not have ever known Marian and would, therefore, never have experienced that loss, and he would probably be happier now than he is. I think that where the writers are trying to go with this is to say that Robin Hood was never supposed to be with Marian; he was supposed to be with Regina.

I sort of am. I have had the account for several months and have posted here and there since, but I am just now starting to use my account a lot more frequently. I will not be listening to the podcast anymore for reasons that are outlined in the comments at http://www.oncepodcast.com/113, but I will continue to keep in touch with fans via comments, forums, etc.

What Tink is missing is the rest of the story: Marian and Roland. Obviously, Robin isn’t going to say that his life was ruined at all. I think that may actually be something RegalHood is going to have to work out together: Regina’s life was ruined because she chose her hatred and fear, but by doing that Robin had a good life. Sounds like fun filled TV drama to me!
I don’t know if I agree. Robin does, indeed, have Roland, and Roland clearly makes him happy, but he lost his significant other, Roland’s mother, and has had to raise him without her. If he had, instead, met Regina and had fallen in love with her, he probably would not have had any kind of relationship with Marian, and he would have Regina. I think that that is what Tink means.
True! Thing would have worked out wholly differently for both of them. BUT would Robin sacrifice having Roland–his child–in order to have had a life with Regina?? It’s a very tricky question.
Of course not, but Roland wouldn’t have existed yet, so he wouldn’t have considered that.
thelostpassengerParticipantI would love to see MAP again but I rather doubt we will given that Jamie (Mulan) and Sarah (Aurora) both have midseason shows, on NBC and ABC respectively. So unless those tank and they are open again…I think this is the last we’ve seen of them. Mulan will continue to be a warrior with the Merry Men and Aurora and Philip will raise their baby and maybe try to retake the kingdom
I disagree. Mulan is with Hood at the moment, and we know that we are going to see Hood again, so we almost have to see Mulan again. I think that it would be very cruel to leave their story as is, with Mulan heartbroken. Either she will eventually get the chance to tell Aurora how she feels (albeit, it probably won’t be reciprocal), or she will meet someone else.
