ONCE - Once Upon a Time podcast
Reviews, theories, and talk about ABC's Once Upon a Time TV show
My first thought is that he is neutral but selfish, but in his selfishness he doesn’t mind taking advantage of others suffering to gain for himself, which makes him evil.
But, you have to remember that people who are considered “evil” don’t really consider themselves evil. Sometimes they think they are acting for the greater good. Doctor Octopus thought he was working to solve the worlds energy crisis. Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker thought that the system of government was in chaos and he had to make everyone listen to his better way. So far, Rumple hasn’t given any indication that his intentions are evil. Regina on the other hand seems to have evil intent.
Rumple is called The Dark One, not The Evil One. Darkness does not imply evilness.

If my theory is correct, then everything that are in both story lines is because The Stranger saw them in Storybrook and included them in the fairy tales. As far as the queen killing the sheriff by squeezing his heart goes, I’m not saying there isn’t anything magical going on in Storybrook, which could explain the existence of the book before it was written.
I also think that if the book was based on the citizens of Storybrook, that would explain why Henry is seeing the similarities between the citizens and the characters in the book.
Like I said, this theory is just something that popped into my head and I wanted to throw it out there to see what the reaction is. I know it’s got to be full of wholes.

Before I give my theory on who The Stranger is, I need to preface that I don’t remember ever hearing for certain that it was ever stated that the Storybook storyline ever really happened. My theory, as unpopular as it seem is based on the fact that the writers of Once also wrote Lost.
My theory is that the Storybook story line is just that, a story. The Stranger is the author of the storybook and he came to Storybrook to base the characters of the stories on the citizens of the town. I’m still working out how the storybook came to being before The Stranger wrote it, but when he opened the box that had the book in it, his reaction could have been on of confusion or disbelief that the book he is the process of writing is already there.
I’m sure there are tons of holes in this theory, but I would love to hear your opinion on it.
