I am thinking he will just use the hat. The magic trapped inside that is. I figure you put on the hat, get to use the power. He’s already the most powerful dark magic user. Add onto his power the magic of hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of other powerful folks…. He’d be a magical god…. He’s addicted to magic. This is exactly where its going I bet. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up trapped in the hat.

Compassion? Its possible… if the daughter had already been born before the queen and king met, id understand but if he cheated, got his lover pregnant, and then brought the child into their relationship, I’m a bit more skeptical…. the queen would have to have a heart of pure gold >>
