Heros don't get their Happy Ending!
Eilean, I think you are so right. As a human I always believe he was never a coward. To run from war, when you are already hurt or there is no chance to win, then is running away not cowardly. It shows only that his brain is not damaged. He got to pirate ship to save his wife and his wife is not really nice, but he tried to safe her. He couldn’t fight, there were no chance that he would win and his son would be all alone.
When it comes to Bae as a human he was never a coward in my eyes. (He burns a castle to get to control a Monster for his sons life. I want such a courage dad.)
The first time he really is a coward when he became the Dark One. Maybe because after so many years hearing that you are coward, that on some point he believed it himself. He is so afraid to lose magic, maybe that is a part of the curse of the Dark One. It stuck on your fears to grow stronger and Rumples fear is he don’t want to feel again, that his only choice is in which corner you can hide, to feel powerless and things happens without any control. So he lost his son, because after the curse of Dark One he become a real coward. He didn’t follow Bae, he do the same with Hook (a sword fight, that is a dead sentence), he couldn’t say a word to Milha, that Bae he leave Bae too (Maybe he took her heart out of the chest, because he was not able to tell the truth and he was not capable to rip out his own heart. Because if he told Milha the story she would give him the bean or get Bae by herself to make sure he is OK). He was afraid of loving Belle, not only in the fairy tale land, where her love would mean that he would not able to find Bae again, but also after the Curse, when he twisted words only, because he was a coward to tell the truth to Belle, about his ultimate reason of living. Until now Rumple didn’t say a word about the death of his first wife.I think that Hook will tell her, when he sees her in Storybrooke and I can only hope that this won’t my last goodbye wave to Rumbelle.
In Storybrooke he held Smee captive to be 1 step ahead of Hook, altough he is the most powerful person in this world. That is something a coward would do. He bring magic back, cause he is coward. He steal the diamonds to create a curse that no one should survive. (By that reason I am not quite sure, because I think it was maybe the plan that Regina would try something like that. There are no reason why Rumple needed her at all. I think maybe he want that she try to stop the curse. If she would die, he has his revenge for Belle and if she succeed. He could see what will happen, when he tries to redeem himself to Bae. If she do nothing he would propably kill Cora. So it was always a win situation for him).

Maybe Bae is not 42, but 35.
In fairytales 7 is a magic number. (7 dwarfs, 7 brothers,7 swans, 7 mountains…)
When Milha is leaving for Hook, Bae could be 7, when he have to go to war 14 ( so 7 years later). So maybe the course bring us 7 years before Baelfire comes here.and the time difference between Emma and him would be 7.
