Hi guys!
I am actually not that worried about the braking of the cup (sacrilege for a Rumblle fan I know but). I think that although the cup was important to Rumple is was also a symbol of a time when he chose power over love in Skin Deep. If he had have chosen to believe Belle loved him in the first place the cup would not have as much importance as it does. I think it is really sweet and lovely that he kept it all those years but really the cup is just another reminder of Rumple bad choices. I think the smashing of the cup could start a new chapter for Rumple and Belle because Rumple is going to have to work extremely hard to earn Belle’s love and maybe this time round they may end up with a keepsake that is a symbol of unity and love rather than power.I completely agree with you! As both Rumbelle said, “It’s just a cup.” The real treasure is their relationship, and they will build that again. I am looking forward to seeing them rediscover each other. And they will … This will force the collector in Rumple to focus on the real treasure. Hint : It’s not the cup! You can’t manipulate that …
[adrotate group="5"]vasalisaParticipantThere’s a part of me that wants the reunion with Hook and Rumple to be kinder and gentler than the promos I’ve seen so far. I’d like to see Rumple diffuse the situation by telling Hook, “Look, I’m really sorry I killed Milah. Since this Dark One Curse, I have a little trouble controlling my anger. The truth is : I should have let her go. True Love and all. Milah wasn’t mine. We were not a good match. I understand that now … [pan to Belle].”
Hook and Rumple are both hundreds of years older now. Don’t you think they would have mellowed some after all this time?
Hook says, “Let’s let bygones be bygones.”
Nah–It wouldn’t really be such an exciting episode, would it? Maybe someone out in Fan Fic-land will write that one.vasalisaParticipantI can see I’m really late to the party with this response. Rumple didn’t follow her immediately because he thought she had a better chance at a happy life at home with her father. After the EQ said she’d died, Rumple really believed Belle was dead. At one point (in another episode) he says his magic can’t bring back the dead, so there was no point in going after her then. I think the real reason he didn’t go after her was because he didn’t feel like he deserved her love. If she was dead and gone, he was certainly saddened by that. He could have done something more to save her–but he thought her best chance was away from him, too. All that self-loathing. A powerful guy, but pretty low self-esteem when it comes right down to it. He was living like a recluse in that empty castle, and had sworn off any notion of romantic love. Done and gone. Just not something he got to do in this life. Belle appeared out of the Blue; she was Hope to him. That brief flicker in a vast Ocean of Darkness.
And yes, I do think this response is in keeping with his character. If you don’t think you deserve something (like true love) you don’t go after it. I kept waiting for Gold to rescue Belle from the Asylum. But in the season finale, Bell went to him. Belle sought him out.
vasalisaParticipantAfter thinking about the events of A Land Without Magic all this week, I’m still struggling to understand why Rumple dumped the WHOLE bottle of True Love into the Well. Here’s what I’ve come up with (as Rumple’s Apologist) :
1) The Well can bring back that which has been lost. Maybe he wants the Well to bring Bae to him?
2) Magic would heal his knee, and anything else that ails him.
3) He thinks he needs power to protect himself and Belle. The town will be mad at him for creating the curse. Then there’s Regina.
4) Some people there really DO need magic (Pinocchio, Jefferson)
5) Gol’ darnit–He’s GOOD at magic. Rumple is a true Artist, in a Babette’s Feast kind of way. Let him create!Ok, then why do I still have this queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach?

Some people have suggested that Rumpel is a bit like an addict when it comes to magic. I like that theory. Rumpel’s been “clean” for 28 years whilst in Storybrooke but now that he’s brought magic to Storybrooke, he’s “falling off the wagon” so to speak.
“O Dearie Dearie Dear.” Addiction is a tough thing to deal with in any relationship. We all know he’s power-hungry. Always has been. I truly thought he’d reformed, learned a different currency for power in SB. Then I remember that Power and Magic are just tools, not good or evil. Neutral. It’s all in how they are used … and the point of view. (Remember when he picked up the Gold Fairy’s wand and told Cinderella it was “pure evil”? To him, it was …) I’m pretty sure Belle will do her best to make sure he uses it for good. She will be his conscience, so to speak. I’m more worried about Rumple being Over-Protective of Belle. She’ll give him “what for” on that count, too.
In any case, it’s good to have them together again!
vasalisaParticipantDo you think Mr. Gold is planning a trip to Phukat (aka Pleasure Island)? If not, where do you think he’s planning to go?
vasalisaParticipantI caught this little video on Seriable of Robert Carlyle talking about Rumple/Mr Gold and the real reason he created the curse for Regina … Gives some insight into this most compelling character. Enjoy!
Chapter 13 : I Will FInd You
http://vimeo.com/41323735vasalisaParticipant[Gold ] set that up in his shop … having Gepetto there [when August came in]. 😮 A way to twist the knife, after what happened in the last episode [The Return].
Revenge, maybe. But even Wicked Step Mothers (Regina, Mr Gold and Baba Yaga included) often push us to our limits, to learn the lessons, and to ultimately do what’s best. Gold probably did set up that little scene with Gepetto in the shop, but ultimately a reunion with Pinocchio and his father IS in their best interests. No-it wasn’t the tear-stained reunion Mr Gold had with the Imposter Bae, but it was definitely a nudge in the right direction for all parties involved. Gepetto may not remember yet, and August wanted to wait until he had accomplished his mission to make Emma believe …
Gold wants Emma to believe, and she trusts August. He wanted to give August that chance. I think Mr. Gold did August a favor, (just as August did Mr Gold a favor in letting him believe that his son had come back to him). And truthfully–I’ll bet Mr Gold does feel better after his interaction with the Imposter Bae last week. He gave up Power in favor of his son. He’s rehabilitating, and sharing the wealth [She says with a wink].
vasalisaParticipantOur loved ones help us be bigger and better than we would be or could be on our own. That’s a form of Magic in-and-of itself. 😀
Of course, sometimes that can have the opposite effect, too. where our supposed loved ones can drag us down and bring out the worst in us — like Regina and her mother.
vasalisaParticipantIn the end, Mr. Gold’s love for Baelfire and Belle will indirectly bring him over to the good side. And I know that sounds kind of selfish and self-serving (ok, it is), but most of the time, it takes the love of a spouse or family member to bring people over the side of good and righteousness. Sometimes only our loved ones can provide us with the proper motivation to do what’s right. It takes love to open someone’s eyes to the truth.
You said it, Midnight Dreary! If that’s what it takes, then that’s what it takes. Our loved ones help us be bigger and better than we would be or could be on our own. That’s a form of Magic in-and-of itself. 😀
vasalisaParticipantTo Pandora’s Imp :
Women Who Run with Wolves was a wonderful book! Saved my life back in the 1990s. I didn’t realize I was so hungry for a tv show that took the old fairy tales and put them center stage! I love it! I was hoping the witch in the Hansel and Gretl episode would be Baba Yaga, but they never really called her that–though she could have been. I’ll be she shows up at some point. She’s too big not to–and she’d give Regina a run for her money! And Rumple, too, for that matter.
And yes–I’m glad you pointed that out. Mr Gold IS Rumple, but in Storybrooke, the Dark One Curse doesn’t have the same hold on him, so he’s free to develop his own personality and talents. That’s nice to see, too. He’s much less flashy and flamboyant than Rumple, and that’s ok too. He’s finding his own way to handle problems. Some things he learned from his Rumple days; Some things come back from his Spindleshanks (Pre-curse Rumple)–Those LIGHT and Hopeful parts.
I’m so sad there are only 3 shows left to the season. What will I do the rest of the summer?
