Yes, Mr. Gold has A LOT to atone for. But like I said in another thread, I’d love to see Belle or Baelfire team up to save Mr. Gold from his own destruction. I feel like he needs to be saved. He can be very destructive and he needs someone (preferably some he loves dearly) to come in and help him
I agree. I keep thinking that if he’d had someone to talk to (other than Zoso The Previous Dark One) way back on that fateful night in Desperate Souls, he’d have made some very different decisions in his life, and found other ways to deal with his problems (“Finding another way” seems to be a regular theme in the show). Seems like he could have used a friend, or a coach, or a good therapist (Now he has Archie and he’s making great strides!), or even just some anti-anxiety meds. His response to his problems seems to be to isolate himself, and seek more power, magical or not. But he’s learning — His earlier quotes about love were that it caused more pain and destruction than any other force on earth … Bad news. More recently, he says that if you have True Love, you can do anything …
He’s built a lot of walls around himself over the years. A few people have gotten through — like Bael and Belle. He has done a lot of horrible things in his past–It’s true. Maybe one purpose of the Curse in having people forget everything was also to forget his transgressions against them. It was a new start for all of them–including Mr Gold. But they are still the same characters/personalities, and sometimes, they wind up with similar outcomes–like Mr Gold being the most powerful man in town, friendless, and not trusted by anyone.
He is making progress : In The Return, he tells Regina, “Murder is different here. You can’t just turn someone into a snail, and step on them.” He didn’t kill Katherine, he just abducted her. Still reprehensible, but he’s making progress … He didn’t torture her, and he made sure she had food and water. Also with August there in the forest — I was on the edge of my seat saying, “Don’t kill him, Mr Gold! Don’t kill him! There are other ways to deal with this …” He is evolving.
And I won’t apologize for liking Rumple so much. I just do … He is not pretty, not sexy, and those teeth (Eeesh!), but he is a compelling character. I’m not afraid to look at the Dark Side of our lives (Read up on the Vasalisa Story…). The writers have shown us he’s able to learn and grow. We haven’t seen much of that from Regina yet : She’s stuck, and may be a lost cause. If she’s a Sociopath, as Emma labeled her, she may indeed be a lost cause. We’ll see how it plays out. The best scenario would be for everyone to find their happy ending — even Regina.
[adrotate group="5"]vasalisaParticipantI agree. but Mr. Gold did attempt to overcome his fears. He gave August the dagger as sign of him finally giving up his power. He said “I chose power once, and now I’m choosing you.” So, Mr. Gold did finally overcome his cowaradice and lust for power. The dagger was his power, but he was willing to give it to his son.
^This. In that one moment, Mr. Gold finally chose his son over his power. The only problem is that Mr. Gold’s offering was all for nothing. August was fooling him, so we’re back at square one.
I don’t think it was all for nothing. Rumple/Mr Gold really is changing and evolving. It’s a good thing he lives forever, because sometimes he’s a slow learner [Some of us are …] Consider his appeal to the Bae imposter [August] as a practice run. I prefer to believe that the message will get through to Bae–Bae will feel a shift in the Force, wherever he is, alive or dead. He will know something has changed about their relationship. And he might even be drawn to meet/find his father because of this shift–if he can. Even if they can’t meet for real, this is a monumental shift for Rumple/Mr Gold. I’m so pleased that he’s finally taking some personal responsibility for his actions. He’s such a compelling and interesting character because of it … He’s on his way to redemption!
And don’t forget August–If he is Pinocchio, he had a rough history with his own Poppa, so this might have been a good experience for him, too. Especially if he’s facing his own mortality, and running out of time, looking for a reconciliation with his own father.
vasalisaParticipantYes–It’s too bad they didn’t have psychotherapy as an option back in FTL!
I would argue that Zoso hand-picked Rumpel to take over the Dark Curse when he was ready to give it up. Remember, Zoso posed as an old beggar on the road, and Rumple gave him some money and later food. To my eyes, those are demonstrations of a good and generous person (I mean, Rumpel). Zoso could have handed it off to any number of people who had enslaved him—I’m sure they would have loved that power for themselves, but he didn’t. Zoso picked someone who was reasonably good to begin with, who he thought could handle it, who could bring some balance to the Dark Curse … Even when he was talking it over with Bae, Rumpel said something like : “Bae, can you imagine me with that power? I could use it for good! I could save all the kids from the Ogre War, not just you, Bae. I could finally redeem myself.” His intentions were good, even if he didn’t quite know what he was getting into. Over the centuries, he’s made the best of a bad situation … It could have been a lot worse. We could have Cora or Regina as The Dark One. Would you want to live in that world?
I just love those promo picks of The Return : The newly minted Dark One at home with his son, having a nice intimate dinner together. Again—making the best of a bad situation. And trying to be normal again.

I just don’t see Rumpel as ever being the character with love, joy, happiness, comfort or any of those things. It just seems so out of character and what would that mean for the show. I don’t think they are ever going to want the character to be that.
Well, that would be the happy ending which is 6 years from now? It’s the journey in getting there to that happy ending. I guess we’d all rather see the tortured souls every week on the way there …

I’m still skeptical about Mr. Gold’s chances against Regina. As much as he tries to hide it, Mr. Gold still has feelings and emotions, and Regina is going to use them to her fullest advantage. And to make matters even worse, there are rumors that Rumpel's son Bae may be returning to Storybrooke in “The Return.” So that means there will be 2 people Regina can use against Mr. Gold.
His emotions can be his strength, too. I’m not saying Rumple /Gold doesn’t have some things to learn. Clearly, he needs to manage his anger better, and open his heart to love, trust people, among other things … Hey, he’s been through a lot in his centuries of living! But these are all possible. I see him being reflective, and thoughtful, and capable of learning new things. He can recover. I am so looking forward to seeing his character grow! He can have it all –love, happiness, joy, comfort, company along with that good life he’s got as Storybrooke’s 1%. Now if they can just break Belle out of the dungeon!
vasalisaParticipantWell, B&B, I think you may have hit on something … I think he just gave her the recipe for the curse. She had to find and collect her own ingredients. I think Rumple just isn’t evil and nasty enough to enact the Curse to End All Curses. He is creative enough to imagine it, but he’s just not that bad to the core. There is some light in him–that’s why I like him so much. 🙂 Like you say, B&B, all the people he truly loved were gone by that time anyway, and he did a good job of keeping anyone else from getting close to him, or his heart. How truly twisted to require the heart of the thing you love most in order to manifest this curse! It’s one thing if you lose those loved ones by natural means, or even unnatural means, but quite another to chose to take their life for the sake of a curse–a sacrifice–for the sake of revenge. Unthinkable for most of us. No–even when Rumple became the Dark One, he didn’t really understand what he was getting into. He wanted to save his kid, and all the kids from the ravages of the Ogre Wars. He wanted to be a good father, and he wound up losing the thing he loved most–his son. He didn’t realize what being the Dark One involved until it was too late. In that respect, he didn’t have a choice–and he made the best of it when he realized his predicament. Made quite a career out of it, too.
People come to him because they are desperate. He provides the means for them to make a change, but sometimes that means their undoing. Regina made a choice (to kill her father for the sake of revenge) and “it left hole in her heart that can never be replaced.” I don’t think she can recover … I was so pleased to see Katherine decide to start over, to make her own happiness in life, to find the love of her life–in Boston. I would have thought Regina might have learned something from that example, that she could start over, too, but no — Regina kills her off instead.
Anyway, I do think Rumple had some additional things going in the curse, that he probably didn’t bother Regina with … Like how to break it after 28 years. Safeguards for himself and the rest of Fairytale Land inhabitants.
Why did he write the curse in the first place? I think he knew what it would take to enact it, and he wasn’t willing to go that far. Rumple wasn’t that desperate. But he knew Regina was. If not Regina, then someone else. Then again, they have been long-time rivals. I think he might miss her if she were not there–a worthy foe? Or just a nasty nuisance? At times, I see him as the great puppet master pulling the strings of all these other characters (He does have those mummified puppets, doesn’t he?) Maybe he was tired of magic and wanted to live an “ordinary life” as an “ordinary man” so he could live a life out with Belle. I guess we have to wait for him to tell us in the season finale …

I just realized I have spent a good portion of the last month on my life doing copious amounts of research trying to figure out the “true” fictional identity of a fictional character on a television show.
I had to smile at this–I, too, and spending inordinate amounts of time thinking about Once Upon a Time, and these compelling wonderful characters. I love the layers and the mystery!
There is a photo of Pinocchio (as a real boy) working with his father, Gepetto, in their workshop. Remember Gepetto made the enchanted wardrobe that spirited Emma away, and protected her from EQ’s Dark Curse. I believe Pinocchio fell asleep (or Gepetto hid him inside–a father’s love, you know!) in the wardrobe and went along with Emma to safety. The Blue Faery said there was only room for 1 person in the wardrobe, but there would have been enough room for 2 kids. So Emma had some company on that journey!
Either way, we’ll find out for sure in a few weeks! Patience, Grasshopper!
vasalisaParticipantRegina’s Apples … She goes on and on about the Honey Crisp apple being so tasty and wonderful and hardy (and I totally agree, we planted a Honey Crisp Apple tree in our backyard), but the apples she has as props are most definitely NOT Honey Crisp. I always thought Red Delicious was the Evil Queen’s poison apple. They have that deep red color and classic good looks, and you can get them all year long, but the taste does not compare to HC. Maybe it is Honey Crisp, but it’s cursed, too!

If Rumpel is able to see into the future (like knowing about the outcome of the dark curse) why could he not see outcome of his relationship with Belle?
I believe he can see into the future, when he wants to. But when his own emotions are involved (as with Belle or Bae), he is blind. Or you could say, Love is blind. Didn’t he tell Emma that they lose their super powers when their emotions take over? When he can be impartial, yes, he can see into the future. But not at every moment … That’s also why he can’t “see” her now in the basement of the hospital dungeon.
I think he was just too thrown off balance by Belle. He never expected that, never dreamed of love. He wasn’t ready for it when it came. After centuries alone, it takes a little while to change gears! It’s too bad they couldn’t make up after their little spat. I know they would have worked out their differences.
vasalisaParticipantI’ll bet lots of desperate souls ask Rumple about True Love, and broken hearts. I suspect that’s one of the most popular requests he gets. On the one hand, he’s a scientist/alchemist/magician giving people what they ask for (their deepest desires, whether it’s good for them or not) … That True Love potion has been one that has eluded him so far … Kind of made me chuckle–if he did such experiments today, he’d need Institutional Review Board approval. [Lots of red tape designed to make sure the experiments were ethical.] Did he “engineer” Emma to break the Dark Curse? I’ll bet—he had their DNA!
