Great topic, and one that I hope gets explored more in the next seasons. My thoughts—
The love between Rumpelstiltskin and Baelfire was every bit as “true” and pure as Emma and Henry. Rumpel both said and demonstrated that Bae was the only thing that meant anything to him and that he was willing to do anything, even overcome his fears and cowardice, to save his life. Bae showed the same willingness to sacrifice for his father. No, he didn’t like what the Dark Curse was doing to him, the same way you might not like it if your loved one became addicted to heroin. You don’t stop loving the person, although you may hate their behavior and try very hard to get them to go back to the way they were.
The only explanation that makes sense to me is that the Blue Fairy lied. Even if she didn’t think of a parent/child kiss as being true love’s kiss (I probably wouldn’t either, I would think of it more as a romantic love — otherwise it could be anybody, your sister, your grandfather, your dog…..), still she could have told Bae as we have heard a dozen times, “true love’s kiss will break any curse.” Even just letting Bae know that he needed to find his dad a nice lady friend. It may have seemed impossible, but still she could have let him know. If Bae figured that would never happen, he might have asked for the alternative and THEN she could have given him the land-without-magic bean.
I think BF wanted to be rid of the Dark One (whether it was Rumpel, his predecessor, or whoever) because she didn’t like his kind of magic. She figured this was her chance to send him through to another world and destroy his power. Maybe a good goal, but sacrificing Bae in the process.

I kind of feel Mr Gold had to rush to regain his magic. Once the curse was broken he needed to be able to protect themselves. The towns people will be out for blood and without power he would be as good as dead. Plus I think he will need his magic to find Bae.
I agree. It did seem as if there was a time crunch — maybe a window of time after the curse was broken in order to bring magic back? Maybe he knew the town-folk would be coming after him as much as Regina once they got their memories back? Maybe he figured Regina would be hot on his heels to get the Love Potion #9. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but I don’t feel at all that he abandoned her on his mad quest for power. He told her, “There will be time for everything,” after he accomplished his task.

IF SHE SHOWS up she will be a character not yet seen in SB or FTL…. but I have a feeling this back story will not be investigate further. I think the writers tell the story and make a statement then leave it at that to go on to tell the story they are interested in…. I do not think they plan to show every detail and back story… from her on out they will be showing a more forward story and not as much back story.
.
This may depend very much on how many seasons we get (a lot I hope I hope I hope!!!). I don’t see Rumpel’s wife being any major player, but they may revisit a bit of his history as it pertains to why-he-ran. Since Rumpel-as-coward has been a recurring theme, the origin of this label is kind of important. It was one of the last things Bae said to him, and since that story has not yet resolved, it is possible we may get more backstory.
But some have speculated, and I think it is very possible, that there will be a whole new mode of story-telling next season, and we may be done with flash-backs altogether. I hope that doesn’t mean we are done with FTL, but it may be more of present-day FTL. Personally, I would like to see it given at least a scene, just to know the circumstances of Rumpel leaving the battlefield, and (possibly related) how he got the limp. I read a fanfic that suggested he was hobbled as a punishment for running, and I really like that scenario, so until something different shows up on screen, that is canon in my head!

My very first MAJOR t.v. fancrush was Ham Tyler in the original “V.” I recently got the series on DVD and found I can still get all oogly over his black-clad badassery.
Avon in “Blake’s 7.” With a secondary crush on the second incarnation of Travis in that series.
My Doctor Who was Tom Baker and in my eyes there will never be another. Okay I’ll make some allowances for Peter Davidson but that was a fleeting thing.
Serious, longstanding and ongoing one-sided t.v. love affair with both John Locke and Benjamin Linus from “Lost.” The only slash ship I have obsessed over, partly because I could just never choose between them!
And of course on “Once,” I fell madly in love with Rumpelstiltskin after seeing Skin Deep. And I have recently discovered a fangirly appreciation for Archie. Please PLEASE don’t turn him back into a cricket!!
You youngsters have to remember that in the dark days before the internet, non-traditional fancrushes could be a lonely business. I could never admit to my middle school friends that I didn’t give a flying flip about Scott Baio or Shawn Cassidy. Fanfiction was passed around in xeroxed copies that were collated and stapled together in somebody’s living room and then hawked at sci-fi conventions! (Oh, that reminds me of my earliest and quite G-rated crush on Dr. McCoy in Star Trek! I met DeForrest Kelley at a con one time and thought I would die. 😀 )

I hope Belle gets an upgrade in the shoe department next season. The poor girl was stuck with those hideous blue shoes in FTL and now she has those ugly nurse’s shoes. Just sayin’.
Here here! Those uggo white shoes really stood out to me, although I understood why she was wearing them. Maybe she and Ruby can go shoe shopping when she gets back to town.
As for Belle v. Bae, I agree with the general sentiment that loving both of them is certainly possible and natural. It is more a question of having both of them. When Rumpel told Belle “My power means more to me than you,” I think he was holding onto his power because he needed it to get back to his son, not as an end in itself. If Mr. Gold was being honest with Archie (and no reason to think he would lie at that point), then this had been his all-consuming goal for several hundred years. No surprise that he freaked out when he felt that power (i.e. means to find his son) being threatened.
I hope that now Rumpelstiltskin with be honest with Belle and explain to her why he rejected her. If she truly loves him, she will support his efforts. It would be a cold-hearted woman to demand that a man abandon his child in order to be with her. Does this mean they can be together but just can’t kiss? That would be a little weird, but not impossible.

weedithParticipantI think one of the requirements for True Love’s Kiss to work is that both parties have to love and have to be receptive to love. Remember when Charming kissed Snow when she was still under the influence of Rumpel’s potion, it didn’t work. I understood that was because Snow didn’t really believe it and was not open to Charming’s love at that point.
For this reason, I don’t think Regina’s kiss would have awakened Henry because Henry knew about Regina’s true identity (or at least thought he did), and has already stated clearly that he doesn’t believe Regina loves him, but that she only pretends to love him. The failure would not be an indictment of her feelings, but a sign that the love was not shared, not true and pure.
We saw kind of the same thing when the kiss started to work with Belle and Rumpel, but when he snapped out of the moment and became suspicious and angry with her, the effects of the kiss evaporated.

I love her sarcasm and how she keeps Charming on his toes. No wilting violet waiting for her prince to come is this tough chick!
weedithParticipantI picked “The Return.” Poor Baelfire. What a fantastic performance from that actor. Can’t wait to find out what happened to Bae and see the real reunion. And I loved Mr. Gold’s session with Archie so much that I am now it’s proud Keeper!
weedithParticipantI picked “That Still Small Voice.” I liked how they gave Jiminy an interesting back-story, and I loved how Archie got up the courage to stand up to Regina.
