It seems like I ask this every episode this arc but…is Rumple capable of changing? In the heat of the moment, he chose saving the shard of magic over saving the box that contains Belle? Does this spell doom and disaster?

What is Rumple’s journey in S6?

He did it once with Bae, now he’s done it again with Belle….I really worry for his coming child.

If this doesn’t show that Rumple can’t change, then I don’t know what will. I think Rumple’s doomed at this point.

I just rewatched that scene after reading this, because I didn’t think Rumple had any idea that the box would be taken.  After rewatching the scene with my husband we both agree that he had no idea the portal was going after Belle.  He thought that someone was trying to get the crystal and that is why he grabbed for it. I don’t believe he chose the crystal over Belle because he had no idea she was in danger and he believes he needs the crystal to save her.

I get that he thought that he needed the crystal to save her, but…

The way I saw the scene, when the room started to shake, for one second he was paralyzed, torn between which to reach for. One hand toward the box, one hand toward the crystal, glancing back and forth, a moment of agony … and then he dove for the crystal.

It’s the same choice he always makes of course. He always regrets it, and deeply, but always a second too late.

He always acquires the power as a way to keep his loved ones. But holding onto the power is always the reason he looses them.

See that’s how I read it too. I’ll rewatch tomorrow before I weigh in on the Rumple-moment, then.

I don’t think Rumpel’s choice showed a lack of concern for Belle. I’m guessing his thoughts went one of these ways:

    * “Something’s going wrong with my spell. I’d better get the remote and turn it off.”

    * “Someone’s coming to hurt my wife. I’d better get my gun.”

I am fully off the Rumbelle train.  He will never choose her over magic.  I think that was made quite clear in this scene.

I don’t think Rumple was choosing the crystal over Belle. I think he went for it because he needed it to save Belle and logically that is what someone would be more likely to go after if they were trying to steal something.

I dunno. Watching it again, it does seem like he’s hesitating, like he’s not sure which one he should reach for. It remind me of Family Business when Belle chose the memory rock over Anna for a split second, putting her needs over another person.
