Once Upon a Time is undergoing a major overhaul heading into season 7, which means new characters, new locales, and even a new curse. To keep track of all the big changes, EW will bring you interviews with the cast — new and old — along with executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis over the next two weeks until the ABC fairy tale drama’s return.
Once Upon a Time may look drastically different in its rebooted seventh season, but the DNA of the beloved fairy tale drama is still intact.
Here’s where we’re picking up with the new season: After Henry leaves Storybrooke in search of his own tale, he finds a different iteration of Cinderella (Dania Ramirez), with whom he eventually has a precocious daughter, Lucy (Alison Fernandez). But the family is torn apart when a new, yet familiar, curse traps them and a trio of returning characters — former Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla), one-handed pirate Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), and the Dark One Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) — as well as a quintet of new characters (see the full character rundown here) — in the Seattle neighborhood of Hyperion Heights.
On Monday, we gave you a primer on the show’s many changes, but to get more insight on the reasons behind the reboot, EW sat down with executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis for a major deep dive on season 7. [Editor’s note: This interview was conducted in two parts, one of which included executive producer David H. Goodman. Portions of these interviews have previously appeared in other stories on EW.]

[adrotate group="5"]September 26, 2017 at 3:31 pm #342140hjbauParticipantIt is hard to read this because i just think Adam and Eddy are lying. I think that they would have kept on if Jennifer had agreed to stay on the show. The whole we reinvent the show ever year, meaning they rewrite the characters every year, yeah we know, is just alarming. I can’t believe they think that is reasonable enough to talk about it in an interview as a throw away comment.
I just don’t believe them at all that they realized in Season 4 that they were going to end the arc of the characters at Season 6. I just think they are straight up lying because it serves their purposes to say that.
They did not end the show how they intended when they pitched the show. I don’t even get how they can say that with a straight face. There is no way Emma and Rumpel’s endings were even remotely like they originally intended. They are just lying and i find that grating.
September 26, 2017 at 3:47 pm #342141hjbauParticipantThey said that the neighborhood is looking for leadership and what better place then someone who has been a mayor and a queen. I really do worry that they are going to be waffling back and forth between Regina trying to take Emma’s place and Cinderella trying to take her place. I am just not sure how that works.
I think it is funny that Henry wrote a book about the first six seasons and everyone hates it. That sounds about right.
Alice is the most interesting character that they have talked about so far. Is it possible she is the dark one in this new book? They need to give the new book a name and give the second Enchanted Forest another name. Why is that stuff always stupid and confusing?
The way they are talking about the LGBT character is still frustrating. They should just say who it is. They are trying to not make a big thing about it, but they still are making a big thing about it because they are hiding it.
I still think it is terrifying that they are doing a storyline on gentrification because i just think that could so easily be offensive and they would have no clue.
I definitely think it seems like that time just moves faster in this new realm and Henry grew fifteen years while the three stayed the same age. That would make it possible that the good guys cast the curse to get out of the speed land, so that they were in the same time as everyone else. Or if it takes them a year to get out of speed land then anyone left in Storybrooke could have a fifteen year old child quite easily that might show up in the new neighborhood. We will see, i guess.
September 26, 2017 at 3:50 pm #342142TheWatcherParticipantI feel like either Henry casted the curse or Cinderella casted the curse.
I don’t think a villain did it. Based on this article.

They also said that there’s an explanation in regards to why Henry and Lucy aged in the New Enchanted Forest faster than everyone back in Storybrooke. I’m assuming the simplest explanation will be that time simply moves faster in that book? However, this makes Giles Matthey’s return as Gideon even more confusing, now.
September 26, 2017 at 5:37 pm #342149hjbauParticipantDid they save all those boys from the land Gideon was trapped in? That was also a time speed land, so maybe Gideon went there for some reason.

It would be interesting…..An idea occured to me, but it’s almost too much to handle. What if Emma cast this curse and sacrificed her own heart (or someone else did it for her)? What if she did it to protect everyone from a great evil? That would explain why she isn’t around. It would certainly be an “emotional curtain call” for sure.

@Slurpeez, girl….I think you may have cracked the case. That definetly sounds like something that would happen….after all, we all thought Emma would sacrifice herself back in Season 5, but what if she sacrifices herself now. That would still be fulfilling the traditional role of a “Savior”.
KITSIS: If somebody is coming into Regina’s neighborhood and telling them they’re going to push everyone out, someone has to stand up for the little people and my bet would be that it’s her.
Yes, that sounds nice and all, but I do hope they remember that Regina is the MAYOR of Storybrooke…she cannot just stick around in Hyperion Heights forever. I seriously don’t know how long Adam & Eddy think the originals can stay in Hyperion Heights….
What’s Regina’s mindset when we pick up with Roni? How different is she?
KITSIS: Well, Roni is Regina with the wisdom of six years of the show, so she is tough character, she’s a bartender, she is sticking up for the little people in the neighborhood against the bully, who we’ll realize is Lady Tremaine. At the same respect, all the experiences she’s had going from Evil Queen to Queen [have led to] a mature character. Roni is kind of the Regina who has all those life experiences and maturity and the wisdom that comes with it.So….Regina’s become the Cat Grant of the show now. If she goes around giving speeches, I need for OUAT to use Supergirl writers so Regina won’t sound like a carbon copy of Snow White.
Because we’ve seen Hook’s transformation from dark to light, much like you’re talking about with Rumple, what kind of cop is Rogers?
KITSIS: He’s a good cop [with] a plate filled with temptation. He is a cop with a very specific mission and a case that has haunted him that he has not solved, and that will be what we’ll be teasing out in the first couple episodes. So Hook is now OUAT’s version of Gotham’s James Gordon…alrighty then.
KITSIS: We will be getting closure on her story in what we feel is a satisfying way.
HOROWITZ: I think it’s an emotional curtain call.
KITSIS: It’s an emotional curtain call. This just does not sound good…like…Emma fans, just prepare yourselves.
KITSIS: Push them the hell out. You push them the hell out and you gentrify the neighborhood and you bring in a cold press juicer and they can’t afford it anymore, then you won’t worry about the Pied Piper finding Alice.
Pied Piper…Alice…did Eddy just slip a little spoiler?
HOROWITZ: There’s a lot going on inside Drizella. She earned the evil moniker.
For some reason, I’m starting to think Drizella could turn out to be the actual villain of Season 7. The way they talk about her….I don’t know. It just seems like Lady Tremaine is a distraction from the real possible evil which could be Drizella….almost how Mr. Gold & Regina were in S1…..Regina was front and center villain, but Mr. Gold was the real threat hiding in the shadows.
You mentioned another author, so are there multiple authors then?
KITSIS: I think so. I think there is. There has to be one author for each book. I think that is the case.Someone remind me what 4B was about again?!!!!!

September 26, 2017 at 10:48 pm #342153MatthewPaulModeratorSomething to keep in mind is how they keep talking about how since this is a new book, the rules and mythology are different. So that could mean the curse might have to be cast a different way.
September 26, 2017 at 11:01 pm #342154hjbauParticipantYeah, i doubt the curse will be the same way through murder and all that. This show has barely had a mythology, certainly not a consistent one.
