The scene in episode 18 when August had “shin splints” made me think there are two possible reasons: a) he had an old leg injury or b) he had a wooden leg. The first reason might be reconciled to the theory that August is Bae, since presumably, Bae could have been injured serving in the Ogre War. Yet, that doesn’t explain how Bae could be alive centuries later in SB. The second reason could be that August is actually Pinocchio and has some leftover wooden parts from his days as a puppet. Also, the idea that August says he never lies also resembles how Pinocchio said he never lied, but then did, as indicated by his growing nose. It was only when Pinocchio stopped telling lies that he became a “real boy” (which was hinted at in episode 16 when August said the stories were as real as him).
Also, as far as August is concerned, he is unaffected by the SB boundary. Assuming he is telling the truth, August has already traveled all over the world on his motorcycle. He is from outside of SB, and was unable to enter it until Emma came back to town. Perhaps, like Emma, he escaped from FTL to our world before the dark curse was unleashed. That way, he could be a fairy-tale character without being under the power of the curse.

Although the dark curse still exists in SB, the curse does not impact those who escaped from FTL into our world or were born in our world. Therefore, the curse does not affect Emma. According to Henry, she can enter SB and leave anytime she wants. She just doesn’t remember FTL or believe in it because she was a baby and was raised in our world where there is no magic. She doesn’t know she has magic until episode 17 because she never knew her true identity growing up. She didn’t know Sidney was lying because she let her emotions cloud her judgement.
Also, Henry, who was born in Phoenix, AZ, is not under the power of the curse. Although he lives in SB, he was aging in a town where time stood still (until Emma started the clock again). Henry believes in magic, because of the book and because he is a child who was raised amongst fairy-tale characters (though most of them are cursed and don’t remember).
Finally, August is able to come and go from SB. He is not under the curse, nor can he fall under the curse, because he most likely escaped the curse like Emma did before it reached his realm. He probably still remembers FTL though because he was old enough to remember it when he escaped into our world. He’s kept his knowledge of FTL and of the curse (without being affected by it) while living in our world.
