Guys, my brain just exploded with a ton of new theories. A few members made some very interesting posts in another thread about Rumpel’s role in the final battle, and I thought I’d bring them over here for you guys to debate over. 😀

^THIS. I’ve been wondering about the strength of the borders between the worlds for quite some time now. A curse as powerful as the Dark Curse would have seriously damaged the lines between our reality and the next. I hope we get more insight into that next season. That might be the “final battle” that Rumpel was talking about. Why would Rumpel want to fight an Apocalyspe immediately after he finds his son? He made the curse so that he could find his son, so why would he attach an Apocalypse onto it? It makes no sense. But I could easily see the bleeding of worlds into one another as the big “final battle” that he referring to. That definitely sounds definitely sounds like an Apocalypse.

Thank God I wasn’t the only thinking this. You’re absolutely right. The main objective of the curse is to find Baelfire. That’s the real reason why the curse was created and put into place. So, if Rumpel’s main objective is to find his son, then why would then turn around and create a magical World War III? Rumpel wants to be reunited with his son so that he can have his “happy ending,” and a big finale battle between good and evil doesn’t sound practical to me.
I think Midnight Dreary and Lil’Red are definitely onto something. In the end, the fight won’t between Rumpel, Regina and The Charmings, it will be between all the different worlds and dimentions. I think that’s the real reason why the writers introduced the concept of different worlds in “Hat Trick.” It was setting us up for what’s come in the future.

Great theories everyone! I’d also like to add that the real reason why Rumpel brought magic into the world is because he knows that the lines between each reality are fading and that impending war is certain. So, in an effort to defend this reality, he brought magic into the world so that Storybrooke would have a line of defense against all the different worlds. Because when you really think about it, why would Rumpel want more power? We saw in “The Return” that he was ready to give up his powers and lust for magic. He gave August the dagger to show him just how sincere his intentions were. So, why would he all of a sudden do a complete 180 and decide to go after more power? It dosn’t make any sense. And I also don’t think that Rumpel needs magic to find his son. Unless Baelfire is trapped in some mystical tomb burried miles under the Earth, than magic is not needed for this task.
So, with those theories discredited, what’s left? I think Lil’Red and Midnight Dreary are correct in their assessment that the worlds are probably slowly dissolving and seeping into one another. And if that’s the case, then magic is going to be needed in order to defend Storybrooke. The complete dissolution of all worlds and dimensions is definitely Apocalyptic.
I also believe that the 20 doors inside of Jefferson’s hat will be the main players in the final battle. Those will be the worlds who’ll “take the battlefield”
Please God. Please let this theory come true!!!
