I said this in the promo pics thread, but if not for Urusla’s age discrepancy, this could be how Hook got out of NL, if she offered him a way to do it, on the condition he take her with him. But…T-WORD. And that also assumes that their use of FTL in the press release is just a generic term for “stuff that happened somewhere other than our world.”

I’m really thinking this is turning into the Original Little Mermaid story only with a tragic twist…

Well the ORIGINAL Little Mermaid already had a tragic twist, because she ends up dead. Actually there’s a whole thing about how merfolk don’t have souls, they just turn into seafoam when they die, but the Little Mermaid was granted the opportunity to obtain a soul after her death. Maybe a riff on that is where A&E get their “soul crushing” talk from.

Maybe whatever happened caused Ursula to lose her soul? Like it’s a literal soul crushing? So her villainy now is because she has not moral compass? (idk. that’s almost too metaphysical for OUAT)

This could work. I mean Cora was LITERALLY heartless afterall. Maybe Ursula is LITERALLY soulless.

It just begs the following questions

    1) Why would Hook demand a soul

    2) How did Hook take her soul

    3) Where is her soul now

(kinda why I think my idea is probably not one the show is going to explore)

TLM is kind of a “Sell Your Soul” story. I could see it happening. Also the casting call specified Ursula had to have a beautiful voice…. So I wonder if maybe that may be what she sold instead to go along with the original story.

    1) Why would Hook demand a soul

Maybe, as a Goddess, Ursula is confined to some kind of Undersea deity realm. And as we all know, magic comes at a price. The price of leaving would be to give up her god-ship, to give up her very soul. Maybe Hook didn’t demand, it was just the price she needed to pay. Perhaps Hook didn’t hold up his end of the bargain (to provide her transport once the deed was done?) and she ended up losing her soul for nothing.

As far as Hook’s involvement, I would have to guess either:

    1) If this takes place in Neverland, this could be tied to whatever dirty work Pan had him do back in the day. We wouldn’t even need to see Pan, as Hook could clarify via dialogue.
    or
    2) This somehow ties to Hook wanting revenge on Rumple, which was still his goal during this time period.

True. Though begs the question as to why Pan would want something from Ursula

Since in the original TLM, we dealt we beings that don’t have souls, I’d like to think that this is Ursula’s story about finding/earning a soul for herself.

Maybe as an immortal sea goddess, Ursula doesn’t have a soul. Getting a soul is basically what causes her grief, which Hook would be somewhat responsible for. Once Ursula has her soul, she can no longer be a goddess, so then she becomes a witch.

Honestly, I feel like true pain comes from having a soul, not the lack of one.

I really hope this somehow connects to how Hook left Neverland. I’m loving all of your theories!

That would be interesting to finally have that question answered of how Hook left NL to return to the EF. I’d assumed that Peter Pan just let Hook leave, knowing in advance that it would lead him to Henry eventually. PP had the pic of Henry centuries before he was born, so I’d been assuming PP knew the Author, or knew about the prophesy that Henry was the one with the heart of the truest believer.
