Consider that Columbus discovered North America in 1492. BC wasn’t claimed as a British colony until the late 18th-early 19th century.
Well the man could have just been born in 1487, traveled there, died in year whatever, and was simply buried there.
Also, does it say 1487? Seems very blurry to me. Either way, I don’t think it means much and was probably just in the shot.

Considering what we know of the colonization of North America (and about how fast people would have been traveling at the time), that’s more than unlikely. Not to mention that a 500+ year old headstone is just not going to look like that (it’s way too new looking). It’s either a prop, or, more likely the date is 1987, since 9 and 4 can sort of look similar — that seems realistic to me.

I am thinking DAVID just wants to get back to his infant son and finish what they started here …. it happened in NEVERLAND … they went off on tangents and took forever to get out of NEVERLAND.If they keep their nose to the grindstone… they would get home sooner.
Do you think time in SB is passing at the same rate as UW? Or will they get home and find baby Neal all grown up?
March 10, 2016 at 10:25 pm #318763nonnieParticipantSnow and Hercules were such good friends that she’s totally devestated after learning that he’s dead, but we’ve never once been given any kind of indication that Snow was friends with Hercules (or anyone else) during her younger years. See this is a problem for me, but I guess we’re rolling with it. Also…demi-god? So, the show is going to call them gods? They acknowledge that Herc, Hades, and Zeus (if we he appears) are actual gods?
This is a problem for me as well, just as much as Snow and Charming keeping a secret they showed no indication of as well as Regina and Hook.
So we have gods now all of a sudden? Great worldbuilding.
I’ll quote Lily Sparks from her latest review:
“these are the kind of organic story moments you get when you’ve meticulously crafted a series for 13 years so it hangs together seamlessly.”
WE had gods on the show before …. wasn’t POSIDEN and Ursula Greek deities? I think they have any and all fairy-tales, fables, nursery rhythms, legends they can think of …. so why can they not go further into mythology.
I kind of wish they would go into fables from other non European countries >> South and Central America, Asia and India have been barely touched.

Poseidon is. Ursula isn’t.

It was never established if Poseidon was an actual god or no; he could easily have been named for the real Poseidon like our Ursula was named for the ancient sea witcht. And if he was, he’s certainly not the brother of our Hades and future Zeus (if Marcus is Zeus)

Yes. They’ve barely touched anything that isn’t Western Europe, even famous stories that were Disneyfied, like Mulan and Aladdin are on the far far periphery of this show.
Considering how flat-footed they sometimes get with race and gender, I would not trust the show runners not to make an offensive mess out of tackling other people’s cultural heritage, so maybe this is for the best.

Yup. Also, Chernobog is technically a Slavic pagan deity, though wasn’t particularly god-like on OUAT.

Poseidon referred to himself as a “deity”, so that does imply that he’s a God.
March 11, 2016 at 9:10 am #318774hjbauParticipantI don’t think they should do stories that people don’t know in some way. That is the whole point of the show. To retell the stories we know. I do think that they should have done better by organizing the characters ahead of time, figuring out how characters could know each other. For example, Snow, Robin, Merida, King Arthur, are all archers and could have known each other that way. Or have the prince and princess know each other. Or magic users know each other, like Merlin know the Blue Fairy. I think if they had separated the characters from each story and just let us meet a few characters at a time, that would have been better. They did that in the first season by just letting us meet say the Hatter, but not the rest of the Wonderland characters I think it was a mistake to not continue that way. The way they are doing all the characters from a story all at once, doesn’t work.

But how do you determine what people know and don’t know? And since most mythology is constructed out of basic archetypes then everyone knows the figures, if only be different names. For example: the Trickster character. You can pull in Loki who is probably very familiar to many in the audience either through myth readings or Marvel. But Loki is a trickster, same as, say, Anansi, Br’re Rabbit, the Coyote, or…Rumple to an extent.
I think sticking to just stories that have been Disney-i-fied is a huge mistake. The world is full of interesting myths and legends who’s themes and constructs are universal. And don’t the writers owe it to their fans to broaden their minds to the wider world?
