KeymasterWe’ve reached another Sunday! What were some of your favorite/least favorite moments of episode 6×17 “Awake?”
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 16, 2017 at 8:59 pm #336210RumplesGirl
KeymasterGENERAL: Ummmmmmm. Guys? Do we think the writers have lost their DVDs of Season 1? Should we help them out and send them ours? Maybe they don’t know it’s on Netflix. I’ll let them use my account if they need. If it means they don’t retcon the central idea of the series, then I’m all for letting them spend some time on my account.
I get why the writers think this might be powerful but it is really just a giant retcon that doesn’t even make *sense* and just destroys so much of the first season.
RATING: 4/10
LIKED
–Pongo is in a bad mood because he’s off gluten. LOL
–It’s really nice seeing Granny, Archie, and Marco. It reminds me of when SB felt like a real lived-in town.
–“I practically invented dark magic.” I like that the Black Fairy really is completely evil. Even her POOF smoke is black.
–“We were destined to clash since the dawn of time.”
–Hook cutting off his shadow and sending it out is keeping with stuff we saw in S3! Yay something that is canon compliant!
–“You don’t have a child out there like us!” The parallels between Bae and Emma and their family will always be a big part of the DNA of this show. Always.
–Snow realizing that they can’t save Emma because it means dooming the rest of the townsfolk. Good for her. That’s the Snow I remember from the pilot.
–Hook’s shadow has a hook. That is hilarious.
MIXED
–I know they can’t recreate the entire NVL set from S3A but it looks like Hook is running through the EF/SB forest/Oz.
–“We never would have put you through that wardrobe if we knew it would lead to this…” Eeek. I get what Charming’s saying. I really do. But he’s basically, once again, saying the life of his child is more important than the hundreds Emma *saved* because she was put into the wardrobe.
–Aaaaaaand now Rumple remembers who he is. *bangs heads on desk* I guess GOOD that they keep it being Emma’s name but it works so much more when it’s Emma who says it!
–How does Tiger Lily know anything about the Savior or the Black Fairy or her being in the town of Stroybrooke?
–Tiger Lily used to be a fairy? And she should have stopped the Black Fairy? Someone we literally just met 3o mins ago is to blame for the Black Fairy? Really? Why? And why do I care when–again–we just met her!
–Everyone is going to share the Sleeping Curse? And it will dilute it? And Snowing wake up because of it? How does that work? Why does it work that way? I mean, yeah, it’s a sweet moment but…what?
DISLIKED
–Really?! REALLY?! Charming WOKE UP and then WOKE UP Snow?! Are you kidding! WHY?! Why must this show retcon ALL OF THE THINGS?! WHY?! STOP IT. So a random FLOWER can wake up Snow and Charming? Not Emma, their daughter, the Savior?! Not her TLK with her dying son?! COME ON! This is stupid. The whole point of Emma was that only she could break the Dark Curse because of she’s the Savior, True Love Incarnate. We saw Mary-Margaret and David Nolan kiss (and have a whole affair!) in Storybrooke and nothing happened; they never awoke. But a MacGuffin flower by the side of the road is capable of waking them up when Emma was still a child and nowhere near Stroybrooke. Get away from me, show.
–There’s a potion that can remove darkness from a heart. *rolls eyes*
–The sleeping curse is darkness inside a heart? Like an evil deed? How does that make sense?
–What exactly is Emma Swan wearing this time around? These schoolmarm, nun-esque clothes have got to stop.
–The flower has the power to reunite true love. Get away from me, show. Just stop.
–Rumple has a potion that will erase his memories until Emma is 28. *sigh* Another random object that works simply “because.” Even though SB was supposed to be really short on magic, here’s Rumple with a handy dandy potion!
–And now there’s a random door that leads into the world outside of Storybrooke???!
–Emma was always the Savior. She didn’t need to be 28; that’s just when she came to town. She was born the Savior because she was born of Snow White and Prince Charming and because of Rumple’s machinations. It was not because she was “of age.” That is nonsense.
–Hook needs to come back to Storybrooke more than Snowing need to wake up and not fall into a forever-coma? Like, seriously? Someone rationalize that for me.
–You mean to tell me that this handy dandy flower wouldn’t have sprung up when Emma and Regina were looking for Henry in S3? What…? Their true love wasn’t strong enough?
–Charming and Hook have three lines about Hook killing Charming’s father and everything is now a-okay! Swell!

ParticipantI haven’t watched since the fall when Snow/Charming went into the weird sleep curse. It was kindof a remix for me.
I did like the whole Black Fairy. Thought there should have been more to the whole Rumple sees his mum again, like the Peter Pan and Rumple encounter. I liked that so much more!
Hook and Emma are cute.
Hated that Charming forgave Hook for murdering his father. Oh it was a long time ago. Um that is not how the real world works. I do believe in forgiveness but I mean Charming had such a hatred to the king and then nothing for Hook. That doesn’t seem plausible.

ParticipantRetcon Galore ladies & gentlemen!!!! Retcon Galore!!!!!
Rating: 5/10
Speechless…like…it was, intriguing, but too many retcons, magical McGuffins, and etc. I just can’t…
Like:
WickedSisters working together.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Snowing Adventure, so this was refreshing to see….even if it was one major retcon.
Black Fairy is very entertaining!!! And her interaction with Rumple & Gideon makes me want her to interact more with Belle somehow!
Why do I get the feeling that the thirty people who showed up in Regina’s office, is literally the town’s population at this point! LOL!
Highlight of this episode was Granny hugging Gepetto…there, I said it!
Mixed:
Sooooo…Snowing True Love Kiss didn’t break the Dark Curse? How???!!!
Neverland…didn’t miss it all. But at least we met Tiger Lily!
I understand Storybrooke wants Snowing awake, but c’mon…you have the Black Fairy on the loose, is this really the time for everyone to start getting sleepy due to everyone taking a portion of the Sleeping Curse?!!
Disliked:
Another Magical McGuffin to defeat the villain….I’m stunned!
You get a retcon! You get a retcon!! Everyone gets a retcon!!!!
Now magic wasn’t really in Storybrooke during the Dark Curse Era….so how are magic flowers growing during that time?!!!! How can magic portals open in a Land with No Magic?!!!!!
I understand Regina kept only a little magic in her vault, but….how did Rumple brew a potion, when there’s no magic!!!
I mean c’mon…David at least needs to sit down and actually talk with Hook about what he did! At least Snow & Regina talked it over, concerning them killing one another’s parents….and eventually moved past it, but are we really supposed to just accept David brushing his father’s death off that easily.

ParticipantForgetting potions are quite possibly the dumbest trope this show has ever developed.
LIKED
That Snow and Charming are finally awake. That story was getting (wait for it)…tired.
Rumple’s confrontation with BF. Glad someone is paying enough attention to realize what’s really up with Gideon. Now quick Rumple tell the ‘heroes’ ….no no of course he wouldn’t do that. That’s too logical.
MIXED
Tigerlily was a fairy and she’s knows a bunch about DF… and we’re only just meeting her now? This would’ve worked so much better if we’d already met Tigerlily at some point during the actual Neverland arc.
I did kind of like Hook cutting off his shadow and it was funny that the shadow had a hook too.
DISLIKED
The magic pixie flower and all it’s stupid dusty petals. This is nearly (but not quite) as bad as the love twig thing they did for no reason a little while back.
The way the sleeping curse was broken. It was stupid. Sorry Once, but it was.
Forgetting potions for you and you and you… seriously?! Stop that!
I guess basically I hated all the magic this episode; from pixie flower to forgetting potion none of it worked for me as a viewer.

ParticipantI really was not feeling this episode, I gave it a 5/10
Liked:
The Black Fairy just feels evil, everything she does creeps me out
I do like when they bring back the Emma and Bae parallels and the Charming/Stiltskin parallels
Rumple knowing that the black fairy has Gideon’s heart and is determined to get it back no matter what. Is Rumple a “hero” nope but he is completely in character. He cares about his family and the people he loves (Belle and Gideon) and he will do whatever it takes to protect them, everyone else watch out.
Snow realizing that she can’t sacrifice everyone else’s happiness just to gain her own. I expect this from Snow because she is a “hero” and therefore needs to behave like one.
Liked seeing some of the town’s other characters
Gideon fighting the Black Fairy’s order and leaving one flower and Rumple recognizing it
LOVED that Rumple noted the Gideon has Belle in him and you could just see the pride on his face when he said it.
Mixed:
The whole town sipping part of the curse to wake up Snow and Charming. I thought it was kind of cheesy but I understand why they did it and it was a great parallel to Snow thinking about the whole town first.
CS fans should be happy. I thought the proposal was much better this time (at least he was not drunk) and they finally have their true love proof.
Disliked:
Emma actually chose saving Hook from another realm which he has only be gone for a couple of days instead of waking up her parents from a “permanent” sleep!!!!!! WOW, Thank the Lord for Regina (real hero here) who came up with another solution
David automatically forgives Hook. OK Hook fans this is where I say he ALWAYS gets a FREE pass and you guys go nuts trying to defend him. Here is another example of that. HOOK ALWAYS GETS A FREE PASS AND NEVER HAS TO PAY HIS DUE FOR HIS CRIMES.
The whole flashback of Snow and Charming was pretty time wasting and really made not sense. The flower was a magical maguffin just to get back Hook. And why in the world is there a connection between the evil flower and true love being reunited?

I do not think you should pick on Emma for that top …. I have two of them like it …one in black the other in red.

It’s not the top, per se. It’s that Emma Swan would never wear those types of outfits and lately the show has been dressing her a certain way that can be read negatively. Clothing can always be read as a symbol in TV.

ParticipantWhat is this show even anymore?
Eh, I give it 5/10.
LIKED:
– I LITERALLY brought up the fact that choosing to let Emma remain so that she can become the savior is a GOOD THING earlier in this thread: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/topic/ew-413-hot-seat/page/3/ and now, here we have Snow saying exactly my view point on it. A hero wouldn’t sacrifice the lives of others to get their own happiness. They HAD to let Emma stay in this world so that she could become the savior. Neal did the same thing. Hook said he would not. Boom bam.
– Hook cutting off his shadow was pretty neat.
– Black Fairy. Oooh how I love the villains on this show! I cant wait to see more of her.
DISLIKED:
– Magic flowers that can break the dark curse? Writers, please exit stage left and never return. K, thanks.
– Tiger Lily. Didn’t like her. She’s boring. I mean, I think its more the fault of the writers and the dialog but I really didn’t enjoy her.
– Retcon central, this episode.
– Hook is forgiven by Charming because it was in the past. That’s all folks…. Can someone remind me exactly what the purpose of all that was anyway? Seems like we went in a circle. We are right back where we started. Emma is upset anymore that he lied to her and tried to literally hide a murder from her, Charming is okay that he killed his dad…nothing came of this…
