Another Friday, another episode! What were your favorite and least favorite moments of this week’s episode, “A Pirate’s Life”?
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 13, 2017 at 9:00 pm #343192RumplesGirlKeymasterGeneral: So much of this episode made no sense or just relies on the audience being too dumb to think out the weird plot. The writers hope that if they keep in generic (“another realm” “some time ago”) we won’t realize that a lot of this is being pulled out of thin air on a whim. It was so overly convoluted and cobbled together; the present day stuff is mostly tolerable–and I quite liked Weaver and his role getting fleshed out a bit–but the flashbacks are like a bad fanfiction.
6/10; last week I felt like I was still watching OUAT, even if it was bereft of most of its glory. This week I felt like I was watching a totally different series that was incredibly poor and silly.
LIKED
–“You fight like your grandfather.”
–I love that Henry’s apartment has tons of knick-knacks like Neal’s NYC apartment did.
–Andrew J. West is still doing good work as Henry; I find him cute, endearing, and slightly silly, which is basically Henry all over. He’s got that cute flustered stutter thing that Emma used to do.
–Bobby makes for a great intimidating cop.
MIXED
–*sigh* So the Wish Realm was in the Original Universe, not UniverseB (where “Another Realm” is) s so how did Wish!Hook get to UniverseB!EF? How?! How are people traveling so easily and conveniently?! Not just across realms but to multiverses??
–Regina doesn’t even blink at Henry being in his thirties! That’s just not a normal reaction for a mother. She should be lamenting missing all that time with her son. I find it extremely hard to believe that Regina and Emma would not have gone after Henry after a certain length of time had passed.
DISLIKED
–I didn’t mind so much in the premiere but Lady Tremaine’s mannerisms and accent bother me.
–“I’m in trouble. Help! Send Emma Regina and Captain Hook!” LOL, okay. So that MacGuffin works that way then.
–Negative 1000 points for that wig Jennifer Morrison was forced to wear!
–No one ever needs reminding that the WishRealm was a thing.
–“I never thought Captain Hook would find love…” Look, Killian Jones may have taken a new moniker but he still loved Milah, for crying out loud.
–No but really…how the *heck* do Wish Realm!Hook and Tremaine have a past???
–“Killian wanted me to rest.” And thus the final death blow to Emma Swan’s character. If Emma herself needed to rest (because pregnancy does that to a woman) then brava, she’s a woman who made her choices about her body! But no. It’s not Emma’s choice to “rest.” It’s Killian who thinks Emma is too frail to go after *her child*and makes the choice for her. And Emma, horrifyingly, listens to him, letting him have final say over her agency and body. The Emma we knew back in S1-3 would never have let someone tell her what she can and cannot do. I cannot with the casual misogyny this show has been spinning out for years, ever since they started down this particular path.
–Wish!Realm Hook has a daughter. Sweet Christmas on a breadstick. WHY. Why is this a plot? Who the heck mothered Wish!Realm’s Hook’s child?! And what happened to “I never thought Captain Hook would find love?” Clearly he loves his daughter. And oh good! Let’s add weird chess pieces into the mix for some not so subtle breadcrumbs.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 13, 2017 at 9:28 pm #343198AKAParticipantI had incredibly low expectations for this episode just because I am not a Hook fan and I haven’t been an Emma fan since season 4, but I did not hate this episode I actually found it enjoyable for the most part. I would give it a 7.5/10
Liked:
Weaver/Rumple: I am totally getting a season 1 feel from him, which is why I loved him in the first place. I am pretty sure his awake and knows exactly what he is doing. Robert Carlyle is just an outstanding actor and fun to watch.
Henry: I like this new Henry better than I liked the old Henry
Regina: I liked that Regina decided to stay with Henry in the Enchanted Forrest because he needed her. This is also giving them a plausible explanation of why fake Hook and Regina are cursed. Now we need to figure out how Rumple plays into it.
Henry and Emma: The flashback scenes were nice and at least they gave us some semblance that Emma actually does care about Henry and misses him
Hook/Rogers: I actually like Rogers character in this new Storybrooke and I actually like the dynamic between Weaver and Rogers which surprised me. This is an opportunity for Hook to be his own person and not just a puppy dog for Emma (although really dream realm Hook? I guess they had to do something to pacify CS fans)
Disliked:
–“I never thought Captain Hook would find love…” Look, Killian Jones may have taken a new moniker but he still loved Milah, for crying out loud.
THIS!!!!!! Sorry Guys can’t erase the past. Hook had “true love” with Milah and if we remember season 2 wanted to not only kill Rumple for taking away his true love but also die in the process so he could be reunited with her.
Wow even with all the happy endings Rumple/Belle/Gideon are not considered Henry’s family as he asked Regina about everyone but them.
I did not like the way they constantly reminded everyone Hook was a “pirate” okay writers did you think we forgot? Did we need to be reminded 100 times in one episode it was stupid.
Emma does not have a terminal disease, she is pregnant and not very far along so why the big deal? I pretty sure Henry was not going to drop everything and run back to Storybrooke because his mom is pregnant so why all the drama?
Wish realm Hook, okay so A and E wanted their cake and eat it too, I get it. This was to make CS fans happy and so good.

Yeah that irked me quite a bit.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 13, 2017 at 9:51 pm #343205ry4christParticipantThis episode was just so bizarre for me. I’m definitely going to have to rewatch it because I missed things and was confused.
Liked:
– Andrew J. West is doing a phenomenal job as Henry in my opinion. He has Henry’s mannerisms down pat and he’s even more likable.
– Jacinda and Henry making up in HH already – didn’t want to see that drag on.
– Tiana/Sabine had great lines. Especially about Henry’s “move” getting him and Jacinda in the same room. LOL. She has the potential to be a new favorite.
– Wish Realm Hook did the right thing in HH and stood up to Rumple. Also Rumple was just testing him? So he may be “good?” I would get behind that. Having Rumple have good intentions and pretending to be shady would be a refreshing change for his character.
Disliked:
– I’m glad Emma’s not dead, but I really would have been ok with her and Hook being separated this season. So we really only carried over two main characters from S1-6? I hope I’m wrong, but I feel like I’m going to be watching a completely new character, but it’s going to seem like original Hook and that all of his character development is lost, but it won’t be. Ahhhhhhhh. If we’re not getting to see the original Hook anymore, I almost would rather he had just been written out with Emma and Colin could move on to a different project. It’s going to take some time to sell me on this concept.
– No Alice 🙁
October 13, 2017 at 9:56 pm #343207ry4christParticipantRegina doesn’t even blink at Henry being in his thirties! That’s just not a normal reaction for a mother.
Yeah, their reactions make me think that time doesn’t move faster in New EF because they weren’t really surprised he was grown up. There was no, “How are you sold old?!” “Time moves faster here.” So it’s been many years, but Regina, Rumple, Hook and Emma don’t look aged. But A&E also said it was 2017 in HH. None of this makes sense.
October 13, 2017 at 10:58 pm #343215MichaelBlockedThat was such a convoluted mess. No wonder this show moved to Friday nights. That is some awful awful TV.
CS was beautiful and I am beyond happy that they got their happy ending but they couldn’t have picked a worse episode for this.
Mainly cause the audience has for the most part still not gotten attached to the new characters. Now you’re giving us a version of Hook that was for the most part comic relief and not taken seriously. FROM A REALM THE WRITERS SAID WAS FAKE TIME AND TIME AGAIN!!!
Yet now it’s magically real. WR is only real when these writers need to come up with some crock BS.
Cause oh Regina didn’t murder WR Snowing they weren’t real. WR Henry isn’t an orphan with ZERO family around, oh no he’s not real. But Wish Hook is!? Dumb Dumb Dumb.
I’m telling you this season is going to go down as a season that fandom will never acknowledge and that never existed. Hilariously bad.
There’s nothing for Hook fans. No CS, no Captain Cobra, which would have kept many on board seeing Hook develop a relationship with his step son but nope now it’s a stranger.
Dumb dumb dumb dumb.
October 13, 2017 at 11:03 pm #343216StahlopParticipantI was so scared to watch this episode because I was afraid of what was going to happen to Emma to cause Hook to be cursed without her. I’m glad that she’s okay, but not happy that this is not our Hook.
LIKED:
Rogers is a good guy and maybe Weaver is too? I thought maybe Rogers was going to end up being an undercover Internal Affairs officer of some kind, but I guess not.
Henry getting Jacinda in to see Lucy’s show, although, that was some plot contrivance that he just happened to post a job on an app that he didn’t even know she was looking at.
Regina staying with Henry. Although, I wonder what Zelena has to say about that since everything Regina does is always impacting her in some way.
Emma’s pregnant! So happy!
MIXED:
I’m okay with Wish Hook being in the new EF. He made it pretty clear that he was searching all realms. I’m not sure how I feel about cursed Hook not being our Hook. He’s a completely different character that we’ll be getting a completely different backstory for.
Does he know Lady Tremaine from the Wish Realm or somewhere else? It sounded like she was the one who took his hand, which would mean Milah and his feud with Rumple didn’t exist in his world. Unless Lady Tremaine is his ‘Milah’.
The chess piece suggests his daughter could be Alice, but the tower and witch reference sound like Rapunzel.
Emma didn’t really do much in this episode. She seemed like a completely different character. I know she’s supposed to be experiencing blissful happiness, but she’s always been skeptical and cynical and none of that was here.
DISLIKED:
The age thing was not mentioned. But, this is when Henry first meets Cinderella, so I’m thinking it’s only been two or three years since he left. But since Henry and all the new EF characters also look the same age, I’m wondering if there is something that makes them not age. There is nothing to distinguish them as being younger.
Henry asked about the Charming’s but not his Uncle Neal, Rumple, Belle, or Gideon.
I’m confused about Rogers ‘cursed’ backstory. I thought he was a beat cop who just became a detective but he’s talking about the missing girl’s case from years ago that he worked on. Was he just a first responder on the scene? He seems pretty attached to that case if so.
October 13, 2017 at 11:18 pm #343218StahlopParticipantAnd I totally forgot, what’s up with all the magic beans? Did Tiny’s crop finally come through (the one he was tending with Ruby back in season 3)? That’s he only explanation I have for three beans to be used in the episode.
October 13, 2017 at 11:23 pm #343219hjbauParticipantI don’t think this at all helped to send Emma off into the sunset. It still makes no sense that Henry has not seen Emma in ten years and no one has come to look for him. It just makes no sense that Henry got married and had a child and never tried to see Emma or Snow or Charming again. It makes no sense that Emma had a child and never tried to visit Henry again.
It just makes no sense at all. I laughed when they were jumping through the portal with the music swelling and the slow motion. This was silly and terrible and just complete filler that in no way solved the problem of where is Emma at.
The obvious suggestion is that fake Hook’s daughter is Alice because of the chess piece. Though, they had him weirdly staring at Cinderella 2 at one point as well.
I am glad that it is done though and that they are gone and were never confirmed true love’s and it’s over and i never have to see that nonsense or see Emma trying to survive in an abusive relationship ever again. It is done with. This Hook only has one memory of Emma and has nothing else to do with her.
