This is more like it! A marked improvement on the previous episodes. I left feeling more invested, intrigued and excited about this season. It really feels like the season has actually started now (there was so much to get through in terms of the last couple of episodes with regards to wrap-up of Once proper). The writing in general felt better, with the exception of Lucy (aka the Exposition Bot). I actually feel like they should have gone the route of having Lucy be under the curse too, and that Henry slowly starts to work things out himself because of having the heart of the truest believer (especially as WishHook remembered Emma because of her telling him to believe). That way she would get to be an actual character rather than just someone who is constantly there to tell Henry to believe. That being said I did like her reaction in the scene where Victoria gets Jacinda to burn the petition.
Ella is growing on me – I much prefer her out of the dress and in the more piratey get-up. I loved every scene with Roni/Regina, and love the fact that they are still managing to develop her character after all these years. The backstory is intriguing too, especially with the introduction of Anastasia in the story. Really intrigued by Emma Booth, who feels like she could be Rapunzel, but I’m not sure?!
They are, in the most part, doing a good job of paralleling season one but always slightly twisting it so it isn’t a complete rehash – i.e. the mines.
Looking forward to next week, although hoping that the Belle stuff doesn’t bring with it the same problem the previous two episodes has had in terms of exposition and getting viewers up-to-speed before the “new” show can really kick off.

I finally get to sit down and watch this week’s episode!
GENERAL” Much better than last week’s and probably tied with the premiere for best so far. I enjoy that there’s a solid theme of resistance running throughout the episode and that we got some answers (and more questions, per usual) to all the plot spaghetti. However, I feel like there’s something missing—a magical spark. I don’t connect to any of these characters yet. I know it’s only been three episodes but I remember falling *hard* for Rumple and Emma’s stories after the first few episodes of S1. That’s not happening yet.
7.5/10
LIKED
–“The key to bringing down Victoria Belfry is a bearclaw!”
–Henry in his muddy red coat looks a lot like the coats Neal and Emma have worn in other episodes.
–“And here you are….in a bar….”
–Regina Mills: the character growth the show has mostly succeeded on. I loved watching her tell Ella that sacrificing one person for a whole cause doesn’t make it “right” and later telling Cinderella to forgive herself.
–Lady Tremaine calls Jacinda “Cinderella” in HH; there goes the theory that she’s cursed!
–Emma Booth’s character is very interesting! I get strong Rapunzel/Witch vibes from them and I think Victoria is in the Rapunzel role, even though that doesn’t make a lot of sense.
MIXED
–There’s a resistance throughout New!EF? I mean, that’s kinda cool if it’s going to figure in really prominently into the series and could potentially be a nice analog to the current state of affairs in some parts of the world, but how is Lady Tremaine royal (she’s trying to marry off her daughter to royalty?) and why exactly are people opposed to her? Context. We need context.
–A shocking number of people who did not care about the upkeep of the community garden are lined up to sign the petition to save it….
–You gotta admire the lengths the writers go to to make sure Wonderland!Anastasia is never seen nor heard on the mother show. However, I’m not sure how I feel about this twist that what’s lurking behind Tremaine’s villainy is motherhood—it has been done to death on OUAT!
DISLIKED
–How does one leave a letter inside a well….? Even the show doesn’t know how this works because they go out of their way to stop us from seeing how this little system between Jacinda and Lucy works.
–UGH, the lampshade moment of Lucy’s “hey this is exactly like when you and Archie went down into the mines in Storybrooke! Remember that!?”
–Okay, I get that Lucy is the new “heart of the truest believer” but honestly I can’t help but laugh while she’s waxing poetic over how a single shard of glass from her mom’s non-cursed shoe somehow proves everything she believes.
–No Alice. 🙁
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"October 21, 2017 at 9:22 pm #343560PheeParticipantI think Daniel is right that since ‘Wish Realm’ was supposedly created by a wish only maybe 15-20 years ago than Wish Realm Hook’s daughter can’t possibly be any older than that…however, I don’t think the writer’s care about that point, so yeah, I still think Hook’s daughter could be any age (and is probably Rapunzel).
Trying to make sense of the Wish Realm existing is impossible. The wish was made to create it last year, but its path diverged from original EF at the time of the Curse, which means it should be 28 years ahead of our main storyline because it wasn’t stuck in a bubble during the Curse, but now a guy from it got aligned with our present day. WUT?
I don’t really have a lot to complain about this week. If I have one it’s that I’m still not on board with New Cinderella (I didn’t like old Cinders much either come to think of it). I don’t know if it’s the coward thing like Nonnie said or just the general unhappiness of her character so far, I just haven’t been able to embrace her yet and I really hope that changes soon since she’s obviously so important to Henry’s story.
This was the first ep where I’ve really had issues with Ella/Jacinda. I know they’ve established that being impulsive is kinda her thing. But with that other stuff, like going to murder the Prince, or quitting her job, or even wanting to run away with Lucy, I can justify that stuff. But burning the petition? Like, has she met her daughter?! In what universe did she think that Lucy would be OK with her doing that?! And in the flashbacks, did she honestly think that any greater good would come from going to see Tremaine in the middle of the night? And then she was gonna kill that guy even though she couldn’t kill Henry? I mean, RLY?
Hopefully they show some growth in her and she doesn’t keep making such impulsively dumb decisions. I did enjoy Lucy putting her in her place after burning the petition, and also Regina giving her the pep talk from personal experience in the flashbacks, so at least the dumb stuff she did had some sorta payoff.
Also, I haven’t been bothered by Dania’s acting in the first 2 eps, even though I know a lot of people have had issues with her. But in this ep, her line delivery just seemed really flat and emotionless, even in that scene where she first met Tiana. A bunch of times though the ep I was left wondering if that was really the best take they had of that scene.
Although I liked discovering part of the reason Tremaine has it out for Cinderella…I feel like it’s just too reminiscent of Evil Queen’s reasoning for hating Snow White. Right down to the preserving of the loved one’s body….I don’t know, I just, I guess I was really hoping for something a little more fresh.
Same. I’m actually fine with all the little nods they’re doing to S1 eps, sure it’s a rehash, but the nostalgia for when the show was fresh and new and great has got me, so I’m OK with them paying homage to that. But if the MAIN PLOT POINT is also just a straight up re-hash, I’m not about that, it’s boring, why couldn’t they come up with something new.

OMG THANK YOU! I was so baffled by this.

Ella/Jacinda aka Ramirez reminds me of the spoofs of Mexican Soap Opera / Novella I have seen on some comic TV shows. Over the top acting, unrealistic characters, glamour costumes. She exhibits all those characteristics… I always want to put lace or something to cover the girls ….

I sometimes wanted to do that with Regina low neck lines too. After all this is SUPPOSE to be a family show.

Jacinda is cursed, so I can understand her giving into her step-mom’s intimidations the way that MM gave into Regina’s intimidation during the first curse. That would explain Jacinda being quick to burn the petition. Yet, I dislike how defeatist Ella seems in the flashbacks. Why would she let her wicked step-mom boss her around like that — enough to seriously contemplate cold-blooded murder of either Henry or that poor man? Are we supposed to believe Ella’s guilt about the death of her step-sister is so strong that she would really help her step-mom murder someone just after she learned her father had been murdered by that snake? I don’t think so! Snow White would never have tried to murder an innocent even if it meant bringing Daniel back to life. Snow wouldn’t even take an innocent life to save her own mother from death. Yes, we saw Dark Snow bent on revenge to kill the Evil Queen, but she was cursed after she forgot her memories. And Snow did kill Cora in SB but only to save the lives of her family members and spare the town of Cora becoming the next dark one. The writers are making it a lot harder for me to root for someone as morally spineless as this Ella turns out to be though.

Things I learned from this episode:1. Any shard of glass you find in an underground tunnel will definitely be a piece of shoe, and not a broken beer bottle. (I wish I had learned this earlier, so many possibilities!)2. People in Hyperion Heights either have no afternoon plans, or are just really big fans of group gardening. But not big enough fans to do any gardening until now.3. When in doubt, just say that you saw it in your magic mirror.Loved: Regina as the voice of reason. She’s been through a lot and has come out on the side of good. So, any advice she has to give comes from a place of real empathyMixed: WR Hook and Tiana making eyes at each other. It’s weird and I’m not ready for WR Hook to make eyes at anyone yet. I’m still getting over him not being the real Hook.Theory: Lady Tremaine didn’t dig up the info on Henry’s heart on her own. Whoever gave her the info neglected to tell her Henry’s heart is protected. Was this forgotten intentionally? I think she heard about Henry from someone who wants to get into our world. They hoped she would follow Henry as he took the portal back to our world. Maybe someone looking for their daughter who has inexplicably made it to Washington? Hook could be playing double agent here.Extra Theory: LT didn’t cast the curse, since that would involve her giving up Anastasia. Clearly that didn’t happen, but somehow she is still awake. I think Rumple cast the curse in order to get away from something in alt EF. However, I think LT added some element to it, similar to Zelena in season 3. It would explain why Rumple seems to be awake, and Belle’s absence from this season. But that’s just me. Stay magical my friends!October 22, 2017 at 9:37 pm #343607RumplesGirlKeymaster1. that’s a really good point.

This sums up my issues pretty well I’d say. They’ve set up Henry and Ella to be the next Snow and Charming. Which is fine, I don’t mind that. But it invites us to compare FlashbackElla to FlashbackSnow, and Ella just isn’t stacking up by comparison right now.
