This is the winter finale! What were your favorite and least favorite moments in this episode?
[adrotate group="5"]"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"December 15, 2017 at 9:43 pm #345086AKAParticipantWow this one was a confusing mess 4/10
Liked:
Zelena’s come on my monkies let’s fly
Henry trying true love’s kiss parallel to season 1, He definitely has the heart of the truest believer. I think it would have been better pay off if it had actually worked
Regina and Zelena still having a loving sisterly relationship
Robin shooting arrows like her father and the fact that we got her actual age which was 25 (Bye the way that means that Emma was nearing 50 when she got pregnant)
I am somewhat intrigued by the concept of the 8 witches who are they, what powers do they have
Gothel betraying Ivy and throwing her down the well with her mom. I like this just because I really need Ivy and Victoria to fix their relationship and maybe working together to get out will help.
Rogers giving the elephant to Cinderella so she would be able to know who her daughter was in the curse, was good form.
CONFUSED and DISLIKED:
Rumple is now imp rumple? What, when did that happen????? Last time we saw him he was in human form so why in the world would he have changed
The Oldest part of the Enchanted Forrest is the original enchanted forest? That makes no sense. I thought this was a completely different realm and that is why there is a new cinderella, and a new rapunzel, and new whoever else. What happened to that?
The scene between Hook and Alice was first of all mumbled so I could not understand it even after watching it four times. So I had no idea what in the world they were talking about, but I guess that it was that she should be reunited with Robyn her love? Okay thanks for that with absolutely no background.
A white elephant figurine helps you keep your relationship in a cursed world? That is a stupid magical maguffin.
Anna is the “guardian” okay where is the story? Why is she the guardian, what made her the guardian, and really so what was the purpose of Rumple dropping into the new/which is just not the old part of the enchanted forest in front of Henry, Alice, and a Rabbit to be put on the path to the guardian if none of them is it. And since when did Anna have magic? We saw none of that in the flashbacks. Did her dying in the lake give her magical powers? None of it made any sense and what could have been really good writing having Alice or Henry the guardian turned into sloppy and unrelated writing, badly done.
Finally this is the winter finale and should have been a really good episode, especially this year when they are trying to keep the fans that they have and instead they give us a complete and utter mess that we now get to wait until March to clean up.
December 15, 2017 at 10:25 pm #345088RumplesGirlKeymasterGeneral: I hated this episode. Just full stop hated. It’s so poorly written and nonsensical by this point. It sucks because there have been some highs this year but they are just cobbling the plot together based on what they want instead of what makes sense to character or mythology; worse they aren’t even bothering to develop the character or plots. They really just want the audience to go along for the ride instead of actually thinking or puzzling things out. And yes, that’s one way to engage with media but it’s the poorer way.
Rating: 4/10
LIKED
–Regina looks pretty in the ballgown during Lucy’s birthday party
–Gothel feels like a more effective villain over Tremaine and her interactions with Drizella are promising.
–“Right. Well, I’m not here to discuss timelines.” 100% the writers going “shut up already! just watch what we write and stop asking questions!”
MIXED
–Why is Rumple (is that OUR Rumple or another Rumple???) sitting in the woods, in the raining, randomly spinning acting like a full on Dark One Loon???! At least it feels like a start of a story and not something random and poorly written.
–It’s pretty obvious that Alice and Robyn are going to be love interests. They can bond over the fact that their mothers raped their fathers in order to conceive them. (gags)
–I get what the writers are going for making Zelena engaged and having her choose her family over her life as Kelly but sometimes the writers take the whole “family over everything” throughline too far. Like, Kelly’s fiancee is her family too and Zelena even says she still loves him!
–Gothel’s betrayal to Drizella was cool but I rolled my eyes at the whole “vines take magic!” thing.
DISLIKED
–Without any development between first kiss and birth of the baby, suddenly Henry and Ella have a daughter and I’m supposed to care because a necklace told me they were True Love.
–Ugh, random prophecy feels less like something natural and organic and more like the writers needed to explain the timeline and created some arbitrary age for Lucy.
–Lady Tremaine is suddenly on Henry’s side because….? When did that even happen?
–Why are Zelena and Robyn even living in this new Enchanted Forest? How did they get there?
–Suddenly Dark Curses are super easy to break! You just need to drink a random thing!
–Why is Geppetto’s axe even in the New Enchanted Forest? Or did Tiger Lily go to SB and steal it from Geppetto? Why even ask Tiger Lily for help? It’s not like Henry had any kid of meaningful relationship with her. Of all the people/fairies to reach out to, Tiger Lily is the last one I’d go to.
–Why does part of Henry’s plan involve Lucy and he living in a shack in the woods? Why are these witches even after Lucy? Why does this plot feel so cobbled together from absolutely nothing?
–The Eighth Ingredient is the never before heard of magic from a witch who crushed the heart of the thing she loves most. Good LORD. That’s the most oddly specific and dumb plot device since “blood of a man who’s been to hell and back.”
–Why should I even care about how powerful Anastasia is?. We literally just met her! And why is she even this powerful?
–I cannot with the White Elephant silliness. I cannot.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"December 15, 2017 at 11:28 pm #345100ry4christParticipantLiked:
– Gothel double-crossing Drizella and being the real one pulling the strings. We all saw it coming, but it was a good pay-off and makes Drizella’s story all the more tragic and interesting. I’m rooting for her more now. I also liked the Drizella’s transferring of her magic to Anastasia. Good twist.
– Drizella was frozen for 8 years. Interesting.
– Confirmation that Jack is “of the beanstalk” variety lol
– Jacinda calls Henry, not Nick, for consolation, or at least he’s who showed up.
– Incorporation of scenes from the S6 finale! I was afraid they might ignore them.
– Dania and Andrew did a good job of playing a couple who you could tell had been through some things during the time skip, in contrast to how we’ve seen them just first falling in love in the flashbacks.
Mixed:
– Love seeing Zelena back and Robyn! It’s cool, but also weird that she takes after her father considering the circumstances of her conception…I would really appreciate a heartfelt acknowledgment from Zelena to Robyn of her wrongdoing while of course still being thankful for her daughter. Please don’t sweep that under the rug, writers.
– The time skip in the flashbacks. I kind of liked it as a bold move to leave those 8+ years to be filled in. Except things felt very rushed and “Let’s get from plot point A to Plot Point B” as fast as we can.
– I actually liked TLK not working to wake up Lucy – it would have been too easy and predictable. I really liked the line they added with Regina saying, “True Love’s kiss only works if both people believe in true love.” That almost actually makes sense of why Rumple and Belle’s many Storybrooke kisses never broke his Dark One Curse…except why didn’t TLK work once he’d fully embraced their love in 7×04?
– The 8 witches. I’m interested to know more about them; backstories for them would be cool, but I can’t see how they could fit all of that into 7B. I found the last scene to be a little “meh.” They’ve left us with much better scenes and cliffhangers in mid-season finales/finales than that.
– Showing us the scene where Rumple gives Alice the cup and tells her what to do was much appreciated. I don’t know how I feel about him being “scaly Rumple” again. It sets up a potentially interesting story, but please, please, please, do not make him anything close to evil again writers.
– Regina’s line about the timeline. I laughed and was super frustrated at the same time. It was interesting though to hear Zelena say something about Robyn’s age being different in another realm. It’s puzzling, but it gives me hope they really will attempt to explain the timeline this year eventually.
Disliked:
– Why exactly did we leave the Drizella statue out in the open to be taken, and have her present at Lucy’s birthday? Look, we invited your evil step-aunt statue! LOL
– Um, wasn’t the tree Gepetto used the last of it’s kind? Also, Henry, your mom has magic – why are you wasting time chopping down the tree?
– The Alice/Hook scene in the beginning was so hard to understand. I definitely have to rewatch that scene. Something was off with the audio.
– So we “find out” Henry dies if the curse is broke (which we basically already knew), but were not given any indication why or how that all works in the flashbacks. They need the blood of a witch who crushed the heart of the one she loves most, but we didn’t see Regina do that. And if she did, they didn’t tell us how he’s still alive. Are they going to flashback to the moment after the curse was cast again and show Regina pull out some kind of macguffin? This was a question that needed to be answered in the mid-season finale.
December 16, 2017 at 12:22 am #345102StahlopParticipantThis episode started out so promising, but it ended really abruptly. I didn’t feel like anything was explained or resolved. Just more questions and a sped up timeline for plot purposes. And it disproved my whole Lucy was inserted into their lives theory.
Liked:
The return of Zelena. It was refreshing to see her as a ‘hippie’ in workout clothes, hair a mess and no make up. Also loved that her name was Kelly. Wasn’t that one of her ‘choices’ for baby pistachio?
Zelena acknowledging that the timeline is out of wack.
Wish Realm Hook giving up his relationship with Alice in HH so Lucy and Jacinda could have theirs.
Adelaide Kane is such a great actress. That I can feel sorry for her after her betrayal by Gothel says a lot.
Mixed:
I like that they made Alice and Robyn a couple, but the epic, swelling love theme behind their kiss was a bit much.
We got to see the bit from the season 6 finale, so that makes sense. I’m still confused as to why Tiger Lily was there. Is she Lucy’s fairy godmother, because then she has a purpose in protecting her. Otherwise, there was absolutely no reason for her to be there.
Or maybe Henry was poisoned with Nightshade from Neverland and Tiger Lily will be the only one who can bring back the magic water to cure him
Are we to assume that Lady Tremaine joined the resistance against her with the sole purpose of entrapping Drizella? Did she become good after that? The kingdom seemed to be at peace for 8 years and Tiana was a princess again, so what the hell happened?
As much as I hated the timeline jump, it did explain a few things, like Lucy was 8 when the curse was cast, so that means they’ve been cursed for at least two years because she’s 10 now.
What the hell happened to Rumple in those 8 years?
Dislike:
How did Zelena get her magic back? Is this something that will be explained after he break or are we supposed to forget that she gave it up at the end of last season?
So Anastasia is the Guardian? I said it last week and I’ll say it again, that makes no sense. Was she somewhere in the vicinity when Rumple came through the portal? I don’t understand this. Also, when did she become such a powerful witch? We were told she had magic, same as Drizella but that it was suppressed as children. How does she wake up and just have all this power?
Hated the timeline jump. This story could’ve played out throughout this half of the season much better than how it was presented.
You mean to tell me Henry had a baby and a prophecy that was to happen when Lucy turned 8 and neither Emma or the Charmings were involved at all?
Where is Robyn in this world? Is she really Amsterdam?
December 16, 2017 at 1:45 am #345106WickedRegalParticipantI wanted to root for this episode so much, but sheesh, a girl can only take so much!
Rating: 5/10 (I really wanted to give it a 3/10 but having Bex & Lana back together made it a 5.)
Liked:
The reunion of WickedSisters! I’m so happy Bex and Lana are back together, and can have each other as they go through what I’m now positive is the last ride of OUAT. Seeing Zelena again was….I never knew how much I missed her till now! WickedSisters are back in action.
Mixed:
Happy that Alice has true love in her life with Robyn, however, sweet Oz! Adam and Eddy don’t even bother with a backstory anymore! How did they fall in love, where did they meet! I guess we’ve gotta throw in “Your questions are pointless” and just go with the flow.
The connection between Henry and Jacinda just didn’t flow too good for me, I don’t know why….it’s just. It was there a little, but then it wasn’t…..Idk!
Who are these eight witches….like….I want to take them seriously and I’m hoping we find out more in 7B.
Sooooooo….ummmm….when we going to meet Zelena’s fiancée?
Dislike:
Everything else….(beep) it, I’m just gonna admit it….this episode was….(beep).
That was the mother of all time skips….with so many plot holes and questions, like generally how!!!!!
So….how did Regina cast that curse without sacrificing the thing she loved most….I’m so lost!
WHEN! WHERE! HOW! Questions we needs answers to! How the (beep) is Robyn 25 years old and it’s more than likely only been at least 8-10 years! Why the (beep) if Emma had her baby 8 years ago, is she not helping her son out with this curse (I know it’s because of JMo leaving, but dangit, we need another excuse now aside from her being pregnant cause that was 8 years ago)! How the (beep) did Rumple revert back into his old self, and how the heck did Zelena get her magic back!!!! HOW!
Once again…. “Our questions are pointless”

Yeah, I was confused at that at first too. I’ll need to rewatch the scene to be sure, but I think the dialogue made it seem like Henry took Lucy to the Old EF, must have sent her back to New EF with Tiger Lily, and then returned back there himself. It sounds crazy, but they’ve had people portaling in and out of worlds all over the place this season, so they very well could be what they were going for. My other thought is that somehow the Old EF Realm and the New EF Realm somehow merged together at some point in the past.
Sooooooo….ummmm….when we going to meet Zelena’s fiancée?
I’m hoping he’s someone from the New EF that we’ll actually get to meet.
how the heck did Zelena get her magic back!!!! HOW!
Bet mentioned having lost her magic in a recent interview, so I’m hoping that means they’ll address it.
December 16, 2017 at 3:22 am #345111rikucrafterParticipantFor a show about hope, it’s amazing how much I’ve lost.
I walk away from this episode disheartened.
The caring story promised in the first few episodes of this season has been torn away.
I struggle to care any longer. I can’t believe I put my trust in the head honchos once again to deliver a story with finesse and care.
I’ve no issue with it not being the most amazing story on the planet. I look to Once for fun, for characters I care to see, and for a way to enjoy 45 minutes every week despite any other mishappenings in life.
And now, I’ve lost hope. Why was developing a coherent timeline such a difficult thing? Why was it too much trouble to logically explain the reason we’re separated from Storybrooke?
They had their space to answer this in the back half of this arc. They CHOSE not to.
I’m not done with Once Upon a Time, but my heart has been blackened. I finally understand what many of you felt after Quiet Minds. A blatant lack of care from the people at the top, and a tearing away of what you loved about the show.
I had faith in Adam and Eddy. And, unfortunately, this episode has dashed that. This is my least favourite episode of Once to date.
December 16, 2017 at 4:01 am #345114ry4christParticipantSo….how did Regina cast that curse without sacrificing the thing she loved most….I’m so lost!
Ok, I was SUPER lost with this too, until I realized something. When Gothel said they needed the magic/blood from a witch who’d crushed the heart of the thing she loved most, I assumed that meant she was going to have to crush Henry’s heart for this curse, but Gothel must have just been referring to Regina having crushed her father’s heart for the first curse. So this can’t be the dark curse – at least as we know it.
December 16, 2017 at 4:15 am #345116onceaholicParticipantwhat a mess
5/10
Last night my time I posted a new theory that the 8 pointed symbol was just the symbol of the covern (via my phone, and I am not sure it sent properly), and since the first time we saw the symbol, i have linked it to the 8 witches (though I was wrong in thinking that the witches were the oz witches).
Congrats to everyone who thought Alice and Robyn are a romantic pair
Anyway,
Points lost for:
-blood magic suddenly being able to be broken by family teamwork.
-the dark curse suddenly only needing the blood of the witch who cast it the first time using the heart of the thing she loves the most….knowing this would have saved Snowing a lot of bother.
-possibility of a timeline explanation being dismissed by Regina’s throw away line.
-didn’t find out why Zeleena and Robyn were in the Realm-at-the-Edge of Realms along with Regina and crew
-Tremaine suddenly working with the resistance…would like to know all the events that led to that!
-Would like to know how Z got her magic back
Keeper of Regina's bravery
