I like the Oz theory and the Peter Pan one. I just want him to be someone else and not one of the obvious ones like Pinocchio or Bae.
[adrotate group="5"]April 9, 2012 at 8:07 pm #141567midnight drearyParticipantAugust came into town with an agenda and with full awareness that the book exists. He road into town with an old fashioned typewriter strapped to his bike which I believe he intended to use to makes changes to the book. How does August know about the book and why would his character want to change it? How would making changes to the book further the agenda of say Pinocchio, The Wizard of Oz, Bae, or Peter Pan?
When broken down, his names’ meanings are:
August: “lordly” or “venerated.”
Wayne: “wagon / cart builder or driver”. I also think of the word WANE: to decrease in strength, intensity 2. to decline in power, importance, prosperity,
Booth: Herald / From the Market Stall / typical dwelling place of a cowherd or shepherd / Herdsman
What does his name tell us and does it somehow tie into Pinocchio, The Wizard of Oz, Bae, or Peter Pan?
I just keeping thinking….
On a side note, I would not care much for August being Pinocchio, but it keeps pointing in that direction (BOOOOO). In the Grimm’s version of Pinocchio, Pinocchio’s leg gets hurt when he is a donkey, that is how he gets cast into the sea.
Hmm, well since the name “August” means “great” or “lordly,” coupled with the fact that numerous kings throughout European history have been named August, it makes me think that he’s some sort of king, tzar or prince.

I come completely agree. 😉 I’d hate for us to be waiting all season long to find out who this mysterious stranger is only to find out that he’s a wooden boy. 🙄 I would love for him to be someone powerful or dangerous. :ugeek:

*High Five* 😀 I just don’t want him to be Pinocchio. For the writers to make us wait this long to reveal who the stranger is, he should be someone very important or powerful. It’s taken all season to finally learn who this man is, and I want it to be something big.
April 9, 2012 at 8:15 pm #141572PheeParticipantOther places to look for meaning in his name….
August von Haxthausen was a close friend of the Grimms and collected folk tales: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_von_Haxthausen
Wayne Booth was a literary critic who wrote “The Rhetoric Of Fiction”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Booth
Both of which tie into the idea that he had a hand in writing the book.
PS. His initials: A.W.B…a wooden boy. Of all the arguments out there, surely this is the most conclusive. 😉

Giving Oz powers wouldn’t make any logical sense to the story. There is a difference between a clever twist and an arbitrary direction. I can’t think of a way that having Oz have real powers would make any sense.
But anyway- I agree, other realms such as Oz are not part of the curse…although I’m not sure how Jefferson got pulled in.
Pinocchio has been conspicuously missing since the pilot. We know Gepetto and Jiminy are in Storybrooke, and we know Pinocchio was around when they were building the wardrobe. His story has been part of the show since the beginning. You really think he just disappeared randomly with no explanation?
April 9, 2012 at 8:28 pm #141574the wizParticipantWhen writers work their magic, they frame characters and situations for emotional impact. The Wizard of OZ used this kind of magic when he framed the Dorothy and the trio as capable of killing off the Witch, and again when they succeeded. The Wizard had no ability like the Good and Wicked Witches.
We’ve already seen Regina frame Emma with breaking into Archie’s office and frame Mary Margaret with the murder of Kathryn. We’ve seen August frame Henry as a “smart kid” to Emma and as a “believer” like August to Henry. I suspect this sets up August having no magic like Emma transforming Jefferson’s hat or Regina’s remote killing of Graham. Thus August may use the kind of magic writers use very effectively, and be very similar to the Wizard of Oz in this regard.
Not to mention how I’m framing August here as I write.
April 9, 2012 at 8:34 pm #141577dorothyParticipantI think it’s possible that people from other worlds got sent to Storybrooke. There’s an interview on youtube with the writers talking about the other doors in the Jefferson’s hat, and one of them said something like, “This goes to show that this curse really spread far, this world is bigger than we know.” (3:59)
Here’s the link to the clip.
April 9, 2012 at 8:41 pm #141578angiebelleParticipantYeah, I suppose it could affect other worlds too- we’ll have to wait and see. I’d prefer that it doesn’t though. I think that would just complicate things. And we think Jefferson went through the hat…if he did, where did he go if all the other realms were affected?
