I’m not fond of the Oz theory. I don’t think it would be very good storytelling to have August be a character from a story that we haven’t even touched on yet…..there’s no logic to that- it’s too random. If we see Oz characters later in the series, they deserve their own introduction.
This! I do hope they take us to Oz at some point, it just doesn’t make sense to me that they could properly introduce a character from there this late in the season and do it justice. With everything else they’ve got going on in the last 4 eps, they simply don’t have time for a detour to Oz. And if they were going to introduce a character as iconic as the Wizard of Oz, said character deserves a PROPER introduction, not just, “Surprise, he’s the Wizard of Oz, but you don’t actually get to see what our version of Oz looks like, what his life there was like, or how he got to our world until next season.”

Emma Swan —- spoiler alert – the swan princess (see grimms tales for hints on the swan princess) The wizard of Oz is not a grimm tale – all the others are characters featured or wrote origionally by grim later picked up by other authors or used as inspiration (yep even alice in wonderland naughty c s lewis) August is a writer, now here are two theories : there is an ongoing conspiracy that grimm brothers origionally thought up a story similar to Oz but most of grimms tales were banned and outlawed for being too raunchy. Could August be the writer (one of the grimm brothers) or the wizard or in relation to the name theories — sorry to spoil here but rumples sons FULL name is baelfire (pagan celebraition of the turning of the season – to fall or Autum as we call here in England. The first month being????????????? August.!

Think of the origional Grimm tales: the wizard of Oz true name.
E.g. Grimm tale: the frog prince – translated – origionally the story was named Iron Heinrich (german for Henry)August = look for grimm character named Augustus

The Wizard of Oz ended up being a fraud. After all that time Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and Lion were skipping down the Yellow Brick Road the Wizard of Oz ended up being just some normal guy who who told them all that they already possessed everything they needed to fulfill their destiny. And after talking to this wise old fraud Dorothy realized that she didn’t need to go looking for adventure because it was right there in her own backyard. It seems as if at this point in the series Emma has yet to discover who she really is or what her role is supposed to be so I don’t see her needing someone to give her advice that she already possesses everything she needs to fulfill her destiny. And Emma didn’t go off looking for adventure, Henry went and got her. Maybe if at some point she feels like she isn’t up for the task, or something and decides to run away I could see them bringing in the Wizard of Oz storyline but it just doesn’t seem to fit here. Maybe the dwarves can double as munchkins.

Though i do think that the biggest question is why he knows things about fairytale land. Like how was able to add to the book unless what he added to the book was false which as of now i don’t think so and if it is true then i think he must have been to fairytale land or been in contact with someone from fairytale land. We know so little about the character that maybe in the future i would think what he added to the book was false, but as of now i think not. I guess it is just that his knowledge of fairytale land is the biggest question about who he is for me.

In grims tale (from which the wizard of oz takes its inspiration…) there are two wizard brothers (supposedly 1 on the side of good and 1 evil) The good brother tricks the evil brothers source of power from him but learning he has to be evil to use it disguises himself and tricks a passser by into taking the power + Zoso. Led zeppelin use the symbol of dark magic on one of their albums but this is where it origionates from. The tale of Zoso and Zoro (good and evil) This is the story we see when Rumple gets his power. the wizard of Ozs true name adapted from this is is Oscar Zoroaster diggs.
I still think August is Baelfire = the pagan celebration of autum (you call it fall) the first month in fall being August.April 14, 2012 at 9:20 pm #142244charmingParticipantLet’s think outside of the box for a minute. These producers use to write for Lost and I very sure that this show is not their first rodeo. The Wizard of Oz can be just a red herring. Look at how many theories have come from just a few pictures and none really make all that much sense. Every plausible one has a plausible conter to the theory. The one that I will go with is that the Wizard of Oz story is just and should be just used by the trio of Emma, August, Henry and any other person they can get to their side as a game plan to fight the “evil empire” and defeated them once and for all to bring back the happy endings.
April 14, 2012 at 9:20 pm #142246hjbauParticipantI don’t think that it matters whether or not a story is related to a Grimm fairytale. They have shown an illustration from the Wizard of Oz in the book twice and they had the illustration of the Caterpillar and Alice from Alice in Wonderland.
April 14, 2012 at 9:30 pm #142249englishwatcherParticipanthmm yes good point tho if u google it there are many links to c s lewis finding inspiration from the brothers grimm. Theres an out of print book been written about it – I wrote on this for my university dissertation. But your right the possibilities r endless. I like to go with August being Baelfire and naturally he is angry at zoso for being the source of all this sadness so if my theory about Zoso and Oz are right there would be the links. Hmm i dunno i give up – credit to me tho if Bealfire does + August for the Baelfire celebration thing 🙂
