Mr Gold actually hugged her first back in the shop when she didn’t have her memory and she was confused by it all. When they were walking through the woods Gold was way in front of Belle and didn’t even look at her until she said his name. Perhaps he was embarassed that he went for the hug and Belle was all “who are you?” so he backed off from her both physically and emotionally to protect himself. When she said “I remember” he didn’t make any move towards her until she said “I love you”. After he admits he loves her and they hug, he’s the more touchy feely one in contrast to Skin Deep. He touches her face and puts his arm around her when they’re stood at the well.
You have a very good point. I mean, even if Mr. Gold hugged Belle first (and even if August also hugged him days before), I think Belle’s hug took was very meaningful because it was sincere (August’s wasn’t) and it was reciprocated (the first hug in the shop wasn’t).
But you know, I completely agree with you. He might’ve been embarassed and backed off. I never thought of it, but it makes sense. And that’s right, he’s been the touchy feely one now, for a change.
It always nice to read your comments. You have a very deep insight. 🙂
[adrotate group="5"]July 31, 2012 at 9:26 pm #152725PriceofMagicParticipantThank you 🙂 Rumple and Belle are my favourite couple on the show and I can’t wait for season 2. I’m especially looking forward to the part where Emma sees Belle and realises that she was the “her” that Rumple was beating Moe French over.

They are my favorite couple, too. And I can’t wait for the part where Charming sees Belle and realizes that she was the “brief flicker of light amidst an ocean of darkness” that Rumple told him about. I can’t wait for Belle to find the chipped cup, either. Season 2 is going to be a real joyride. 😀

I can see some of the reactions being:
Belle’s father- horrified. Would probably think Rumple bewitched Belle or something and tricked her into loving him. Would also have the memory of Rumple beating him with his cane so would probably fear for Belle’s safety.
Charming- Would connect the dots of Belle being Rumple’s true love and then let them get on with their relationship.
Snow- Would probably be a bit surprised but accept it. May even befriend Belle.
Emma- Would see it as none of her business.
The rest of the town- May avoid Belle because of her association with Rumple.

I think you’re right on the dot with this. 😉
August 2, 2012 at 3:53 am #152778AliasscapeParticipantI believe Emma’s (and by default’s Snow and Charming’s reaction) is dependent upon how she deals with Rumpel tricking her into almost getting herself killed by a dragon for magic that he ran away with, thus leaving her in the lurch and leaving her son to die. I really don’t want that all glossed over. So I think Emma more than most of the rest of the town has reason to dislike anyone who associates with Rumpel.
I’d think most would figure Belle, poor girl’s been locked up for 28 years doesn’t know what kind of a man she loves at all and try to help her see the light. It sounds like it’d then be more likely that Belle would reject them trying to “help” and cling to Rumpel. (Even though I’d much prefer the opposite.)
If everyone figures out Rumpel created the curse, and if magic immediately starts wreaking havoc and they figure out he did that too (I mean Rumpel probably just gave power back to Emma, Snow and Charming’s worst enemy), then even more reason for Rumpel and Belle to be outcasts.
That’s truer to the story of Beauty and the Beast anyway, even though the Beast had done far less to anyone than Rumpel has.
August 2, 2012 at 4:05 am #152779autumnParticipantYour ideas and theories are very interesting.
I think at some level many of the SB residents have been outcasts in the past. While I don’t think they’d accept Belle and her relationship with Mr. Gold at first, I think eventually they’ll understand that she’s a good person and they’ll accept her in their community.
I pretty much think that, at some point, Belle is going to be the one holding Rumple’s reins, so to speak. People would trust her with talking some sense into Rumple. I think she could become important as some kind of diplomat person between the people of SB and Mr. Gold. And I also believe Belle is going to try hard to make other people see that Rumple is not the villain they think he is. She’s going to be some sort of bridge and hopefully measure Rumple’s actions in a good way. And somehow I can also imagine Belle making hers Rumple’s quest to find Bae.
I keep thinking, before being Rumple’s lover, she’s his friend… pretty much the only true friend he’s ever had. I think that is going to be good for Rumple’s. He doesn’t have to fight his battles alone anymore.
But I definitely think it’s going to be an awkward start for Belle in Storybrooke, but she’ll fit in. I have no doubts about it.
August 2, 2012 at 4:30 am #152782AliasscapeParticipantThey hated Gold for greedily overcharging their rent and controlling basically everyone’s buildings or businesses. I think they knew they’d either be out on the streets or he might arrange “accidental fires” if they didn’t pay up. Without knowing his fairy tale identity, they still feared him more than Regina.
When they find out he’s Rumpelstiltskin, what Charming called “the most dangerous man in the realms” and a “scourge” on the kingdoms (keep in mind the sword fight in the infinite forest with Rumpel being a fan of true love, precedes the wedding, and Charming personally helping arrange for the guy to be locked up), they should probably hate him even more.
I could see Belle being a go-between but I don’t think that would do her any favors or help her to fit in. The more I think about her doing that the more I think of her as a Sidney Glass. He was madly in love Regina, would do anything for her and at times did try to tell people that she wasn’t that bad. The guy didn’t seem to have many friends. They just tolerated him to keep off Regina’s bad side and otherwise felt sorry for him. Once Emma finally knew how bad Regina was, Sidney Glass’s love for her downright disgusted Emma.
If people know she’s aligned with Rumpel, I see Belle with a lot more pity than friendship.

Judging by the new spoilers provided by Emilie herself, I don’t think maing friends is going to be Belle’ main concern. She said that Belle would be a bit darker next season, thus possibly making her a little more sympathetic to Rumpel’s cause. So, I don’t think Belle will even want to make friends with the rest. The experience of being locked in a mental asylum and being in love with Dark One will make her much darker and a little more mature than her former Fairytale self.
And I think using Sidney Glass as a comparison is a bit overkill. Sidney Glass was a lovesick puppy who Regina toyed with and never truly loved. Rumpel and Belle, however, have been proven to be true love. So, the sacrifices they make for each other have a little more meaning. Sidney’s sacrifices were all based on the lie that Regina loved him. It’s not the same thing.
August 2, 2012 at 5:54 am #152785midnight drearyParticipantDoes Rumpel even need to worry being an outcast? He’s the freaking Dark One. I don’t think he really cares. 😆 He’s never shown any concern for being accepted or liked. So, I don’t think Emma and the Charmings avoiding him is going to hurt his feelings. Their relationship will probably revert back to what it was in Fairytale land. They hate Rumpel, and yet, they allow themselves to get tricked by him constantly. I’m just hoping they don’t do what Snow did in “Heart of Darkness.” Snow knew that Rumpel was bad news, and yet she asked for his help anyway. I kind of see that same naivity remaining in tact, unfortunately.
