Unintentional racism is still racism. Do I think A and E are setting out to be racist? No. Certainly not. But the way they write the PoC on this show does come across as being unintentionally racist, with no one it the writing room realizing it. It’s an issue when every single PoC on the show is being treated the way they are being treated.
I can see your point however I wouldn’t necessarily call it racism for the reason that racism is bullying based on someone’s race or skin colour. Bullying is the persistent and DELIBERATE intent to belittle and cause feelings of negativity and low self-worth in others. Whilst the lack of POC certainly does seem to be a recurring thing, if A&E aren’t deliberately doing it then it’s not bullying which means it’s not racism. But I can totally see why it does appear that way.
And the story they keep writing is that PoC are easily disposed of or secretly white people. It’s…an issue.
It is an issue but there also plenty of white characters that just disappear and what not so it’s not just an issue that’s relegated to POC characters.
Zelena being alive does not necessitate Marian dying in the way past, or as someone else put it, before the show actually had to deal with her in any meaningful way. She spent most of 4A passed out, and then in her big return: she’s been dead all along and is really a white woman. And on top of this, we actually saw a really strong woman in Marian in the EF flashbacks. It’s insult to injury.
Again I think it’s more a case of A&E didn’t know what to do with Marian beyond using her as an obstacle for OQ which backfired on them rather than them deliberately side-lining Marian because she’s a POC. Quote
ugh. i like that you used a white woman clapping too.
And this is how currently how I feel about this thread.
So done. That we apparently have to snipe at each other over what gifs we use to express our emotions.

I will agree with that. I just wish that we’d get one PoC who is fleshed out since we have *several* white characters who are highly fleshed out at this point.
2) cast a POC as a new regular next season (e.g. Aladin and Jasmine)
I’m nervous for that because I don’t know that I trust A and E to actually cast someone of Arab origin.

I feel like the casting for those two will be opened up to people of Middle Eastern and Asian descent. Naveen Andrews is Jafar, and he’s of Indian descent, rather than specifically Arab.

I agree. But Cinderella, Ariel and Aurora don’t count as being “highly fleshed out” just because they made cameos in S4. But I do strongly agree that secondary minority characters seem to fade into the background (cough Mulan cough) while their white colleagues at least get to make cameos. (Though as @MatthewPaul pointed out, Mulan not being in S4 might be down to actor unavailability).

Me too! Cyrus, despite being part-Latino and therefore a minority, was nowhere close to being Arab.

Good point. And Naveen killed it as Jafar.
In other news. I think we all need to take a brief step back. We’ve got hurt feelings, anger, and a lot of bolded words going on. I’m just as guilty as anyone since this is a hot button issue and one I care about. But I think it would be good if we all…cooled our jets for a moment.
This thread isn’t going to be closed and I’m not using my Mod-Voice, just asking that we all not snark at each other but remain level headed.

I don’t believe that A&E are intentionally being racist either, but it doesn’t seem like the are making any true effort to diversify their cast by including non-white, non-straight, characters. In the little times we DO get those characters, they are instantly put away with either by death or just not being important at all.
All they have to do is write the show differently if they wanted. There could be a thousand ways to bring back Zelena without having to literally scarficie another POC to do it. Urusla could have played a huge role in this show given what they built her up as (a friggin OCTOPUS SEA GODDESS folks! Come on! How can that not be awesome and dangerously powerful) but no, they put her on the bus and gave her basically nothing compared to the other Queens. And the list goes on. I jut find it odd that we can have no POC character of importance without them being evil.

Tamara would have been more sympathetic if they’d continued to develop her backstory. When they abandoned the entire magic-versus-technology plot, she shared the same fate as her white male partner.
Marian – Dead. And what little significance she had to the plot turned out to not actually be her at all but another white woman in disguise.
I think the material that Christie Laing is getting to work with — as Zelena in the modern world and as Marian in the flashbacks — is more interesting now.

I thought Peter Gadiot was well cast for the role as Cyrus. He looks a lot like my Iranian friend.

April 13, 2015 at 3:52 pm #301451PriceofMagicParticipantIt’s a shame there aren’t more PoC who’re regulars. As I wrote, A&E had a real chance to bring in a new character who was a PoC after Neal was killed, but instead brought in Will Scarlet, a white man. The shortcoming of the writers is two-fold: (1) shiny toy syndrome and (2) lack of racial diversity among the core cast.
I agree. I don’t know why they’ve even brought in Will to be honest, he’s got no storylines of his own. It seems Will is the new Ruby.
Question about racial diversity among the core cast: Are we talking actual race or skin colour? Lana is latina so there is some diversity but she’s a white latina therefore the core cast is all white?

Lana is a PoC because she is half Latina, hence why we say that the cast is mostly white. She is the exception.
