I re watched Red Handed the other day & Dr whale was acting very strange, like he was trying to Keep Ruby in storybrooke, that is right up until Emma & MM came up to them, then he scarpered off quick smart…… Since then Dr Whale has been bugging me.
If he’s under Regina’s thumb (& we know that’s pretty much the case from the whole John doe/David thing with outright lying to MM about his stats when he grabbed her in the hospital & also his ‘1 night stand’ *cough* with MM after David woke up & he & MM started ‘hanging’ out), then he could be like some weird ‘sweeper’ who nabs those who try to escape storybrooke/ the curse & would explain the lack of memory/disappearance of these folks (that we know of)- they go into the hidden hospital behind the EXIT door (or into the Whale’s belly like pinocchio did) lolThen theres the whole Kathryn’s heart/DNA thing, the only way Regina could have possibly got a positive result for that, is if they had some of Kathryn’s DNA & used that instead of the actual hearts DNA- who could possibly have had access or the ability to do that? Why Dr Whale could he has a whole hospital’s resources at his disposal 😉 .
My sister thinks he’s “the Whale” from pinocchio, which I think is correct considering his name 😉 however I also think he may also be Carlo, the boy who lead pinocchio astray & into toyland, where he was turned into a donkey without noticing.
So whats his story? Why is he keen to help keep MM & David apart, yet inclined to want Ruby to stay in SB? He has to know about the mental ward behind the EXIT sign under the hospital, yet it seems no one else really does (I mean there’s a bunch of health/human rights violations there if ever you saw them lol 😉 ).

All I know for sure is, I don’t like or trust him.
You’d think he’d have to have been close to EQ in Fairytale. Sidney’s under her thumb in both worlds, as was Graham, so we can probably expect the same for Dr Whale. But the way they mix up the fairytales on this show, who knows who EQ will associate with next. I mean, who’d have thunk she was buddies with the Mad Hatter?
It does seem that almost everyone in SB has a name that connects them in some way to their FT character. BTW that is an interesting thought that he might be assigned the job to keep people from leaving SB.
It would make sense that Dr Whale is the whale from Pinnochio. We have seen Geppetto, Jiminy, the blue fairy who are all from that story. Dr Whale is the only other character from the first five episodes who do not have a Fairy Tale Land name and there is an upcoming episode concerning Pinnochio. Besides how many other fairy tales can you name with whale in it,; Disney, Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson???
Dr. Whale as the Whale seems too obvious for me, it has to be a related word ie Jimminy Cricket isn’t called Dr. Cricket it’s Dr. Hopper and the magic mirror is Sydney Glass not Sydney Mirror although that is what the newspaper is called. Really liking the August as Pinocchio theory and expecting that since the magic mirror Sydney was originally a genie that he will appear as the genie from Aladdin given how they like to intertwine the Fairy tales. Back onto Dr. Whale, something to do with water, Captain Ahab was suggested to me or perhaps Captain Nemo…………… I was wondering about the Little Mermaid? I mean obviously he is not The Sea Witch (Ursula) but then who? Work through all our water related characters people c’mon. Also Dr. Thatcher from the animal hospital, one of the three little pigs, think about it, Thatcher, thatch, straw. Can we please take this line of thinking with Dr. Whale cause I just don’t think he is the actual whale Monstro from Pinochio. Of course if it turns out I am completely wrong and he is then I’m sorry. This has got me stumped and it’s become a case of I gotta work it out. Whale, fish, shark…………………. 😕
I’d love for Regina to somehow morph into Ursula if/when they do The Little Mermaid. Now that I think of it, her sidekicks in the Disney movie…
Flotsam and Jetsam are Ursula’s green moray eel minions. They frequently do Ursula’s bidding and act as her spies, keeping their eye on the events unfolding in and around Atlantica. In The Little Mermaid, they are tasked with following Ariel and report her actions back to Ursula. They eventually manipulate Ariel into visiting Ursula in order to gain human legs. They are ultimately killed in the film’s climax when Ursula accidentally destroys them with King Triton’s trident. They were voiced by Paddi Edwards in the film.
Do her bidding and act as her spies? Sounds Dr Whale-ish to me! Maybe in the Once-iverse, Ursula/Regina only had the one eel and he’s been upgraded to whale status in Storybrooke?
Scratch the ‘it’s his heart theory’ got a bit carried away. Obviously not his as it wasn’t glowing. Woops. Plus Dr. Thatcher could also be the Straw man if they do a Wizard of Oz special.
Dr. Whale does seem to be one of Regina’s minions. So he is in debted to her somehow. Regina did say to Rumple that she need help with a certain mermaid. Dr. Whale does not have any contact or association with Dr. Hopper or Marco, so I can go along with Dr. Whale being involved with the Little Mermaid Story. It will only be confirmed if they do show Ariel’s Storybrooke counterpart and see if she has any contact with Whale. He has been seen with Red, Mary Margaret and David though so he can still fit into the Charming / Snow White story.
