ParticipantI didn’t watch the last episode. I read the spoilers on IMDb, though. That was quite enough.
I was entertaining a notion that maybe Hook really is starting to slowly realize that he isn’t a hero at all, that he let Bae/Neal down, that he can’t really be a good father figure to Henry, that he failed Ariel and Eric … and that he’s not what Emma ultimately needs or wants. And in the end, he’ll do the only thing he can for her and somehow sacrifice himself to defeat Zelena and bring Neal back, thereby making both his and Neal’s third season promo posters true, after all.
Now, THAT’s a storyline. It’ll never happen. Sigh.

KeymasterMy best friend brought up a really good point: Emma doesn’t want to live in the past anymore, but somehow in the span of 40 mins she went from wanting to go back to NYC to deciding to stay? You can’t have a character go through that kind of emotional change and not show us WHY

ParticipantWhen Hook was teaching Henry how to cheat, that’s when I knew there’s no future for CS.
There’s a much bigger picture happening here, and I think we’re just going to have to wait to see how they conclude all this.
It’s more about Henry than Emma, and Henry deserves better.
Agreed. Everything they’re doing with Hook right now is painting him in a worse and worse light as a suitable suitor. He’s teaching Henry to cheat so you always win, Emma’s opinion of him is changing based on something good he let her believe about a situation, when the truth about the situation is that he chose to kill a man instead of doing the right thing that Emma thinks he did.
And don’t get me wrong, I LIKED that they had Hook kill Blackbeard because PIRATE so it felt in character, which Hook hasn’t felt to me in ages. But would they seriously be writing him this way if they’re intending to make him the TL of the freaking Saviour?
A mere year ago, Hook had the option of letting a man live, and losing his ship as a result, but he’d help Ariel find Eric because Blackbeard would tell where he was. The choice Hook made, he made Blackbeard walk the plank, sliced him to make him bleed to attract the sharks, then shoved him into the water and there was a feeding frenzy as Blackbeard was eaten alive. All while Ariel stood there all, “WTF man, you said you’d help me find Eric?!”
Like I said, I’m OK with that because PIRATE, and pirates defend their ships 1000% because there’s a special relationship there, and the JR was the only love that Hook felt he had left (Sidenote: the REAL ship that came out of this ep a winner was Flook, because he displayed intimate knowledge of where the loose floorboard was on the deck and he was proud of knowing those floorboards so well. #OTP). So I have no issue with Hook having killed Blackbeard, or choosing his ship over some mermaid he’d just met, or even lying to accept credit for the Eriel reunion. That lie fit in perfectly with the earlier scene where he taught Henry to cheat to always win. He held back the truth, and won a little more of Emma’s favour.
The only problem I have with it is people (including the writers if they make this relationship happen) thinking that this portrayal of Hook makes him an acceptable romantic partner for the freaking born of pure TL Saviour, and an acceptable father figure for her son. Because, just, NO. And I’d like to think that the writers, for all their faults, aren’t that oblivious to how they’re portraying Hook as being a bad example, and they’re deliberately writing him that way because in the end nothing will come of it.
They showed him selfishly choosing the love of his ship (JR) over being a better man and selflessly helping to save Eric and reunite him with his lost love. Frankly, it feels a bit like a setup where he’ll again be faced with the option of choosing the love of his ship (CS) over doing something selfless to save another man’s life and reunite him with his lost love. And because we’ve seen the situation with him, Ariel and Eric and how he made the wrong choice, it would be a much needed, believable and powerful redemptive moment when he makes the RIGHT choice in a similar situation with Emma and Neal.
That’s how the story progression would make sense to me, anyway. Whether or not the writers have that level of competence right now, I’m still flipping a coin on that one.

Agreed but they keep erasing his victims. Ariel and Eric are living happily ever after on an island somewhere and we will NEVER see them again. The writers very deliberately wrote them out by putting them someplace far far far far away. The only people who know now are Zelena and Hook. So Hook would have to confess to murder, pirating, and lying in one breath. And thus far, his confessions are more of the Woobie!Hook nature and not “here’s what I’ve actually done” nature.
It worries me

That is an excellent observation which just makes her comment seem even more out of place. Things she was determined about mere hours earlier: Henry going back to NYC, and asking Hook what he wasn’t telling her about the missing year, and suddenly she just drops both of those things? Nope. I know her lie detector is iffy, but NOPE. She spent those few hours that afternoon honing her magic, tapping into it in a MAJOR way. If anything, her lie detector should be invincible right now. The more I think of it, the more I think she’s scamming him with her talk of not caring about the past. It validates him for having told her to not take Henry away, it makes him feel like he got away with not having to reveal his secrets. By Emma making him feel like they’re 100% fine and she just wants to move forward, possibly even WITH him, she could just be playing him to get closer so he WILL reveal things that she KNOWS he’s holding back.
Before Hook showed up at the door, Emma and Regina had been alone and talking. We’ve already seen them devise a plan to put on a fake front to try and trick someone into giving themselves up, and we even got a callback to that in this ep when Regina brought up their stakeout in the Bug. Then they showed them working together closer than ever before, and there was even a scene where Regina pointed out how Hook’s a lost cause when it comes to Emma.
Before Hook knocked on the door, Emma and Regina had been discussing how Emma would start playing up to Hook to hopefully get him to spill, because they need to know what he knows if it will potentially help defeat Zelena, and this is their new plan to get the info. Henceforth this shall be my headcanon to explain Emma acting so woefully OOC in that scene.
Bonus for some SF FEELS: Part of the reason she’s scamming Hook is because she’s pissed thinking that if he’d just told them everything up front, Neal might still be alive, so she’s using him to inspire and drive her conviction.
(I need to stop writing posts on my phone that are gonna end up being long and rambly. Hand cramp much.)

ParticipantY’know, when you put it that way Phee? Perhaps my cracktheory ending of having Hook sink the JR with the WWW onboard (y’know, water and all) is not so insane. Not sure how it would bring Nealfire back, but I have been cracktheory on that for a while so…
(Yes, I know it’s insane. But Phee made it sound slightly less insane.)
Cause this story needs some mending & a better happy ending...

Phee makes everything sound less insane for some reason

It worries me too, BUT the flipside of eliminating people who could tell the truth about him means that in the end it will be up to HIMSELF to come clean, show some good form, and that would mean more for his development as opposed to having someone else tell his secrets. He’d really have to own all his misdeeds, which would actually make for a wonderful moment for him that would lead to some real redemption. And while we don’t have confidence in the writers right now to tell the story in the best way, we DO have confidence in their ability to make characters do instant 180s and do OOC stuff, so maybe there IS hope for a turnaround for Hook.

One thing I noticed, speaking of Good Form.
Hook tells Emma and Regina “it’s not good form to spy on an intimate moment” (speaking about Eriel)
Then moments later….spying on Emma and co at Granny’s. Bad form indeed, Captain

Oh you’re nuts, honey
