Participant@RumplesGirl: If I’m honest the second half is bordering on depression. All kinds of tragedy is happening. Neal is dead. Henry doesn’t remember him. Everyone is scared/turned into flying monkeys. Rumple is being controlled by Zelena. Belle is alone. Hook’s being shady. People get betrayed. Lies are continuously told. Everything is just so damn sad.
And then 2 seconds of Charming letting Henry drive his car is supposed to be the comedy that lightens the mood? That scene is totally forgotten because it’s overshadowed by gloom and doom.

ParticipantI used to be such an apologist for the show. “They’ll get to this plot hole, don’t worry!” and such. After Neal’s death, it’s like the rose tinted glasses came off. I find it hard to overlook or explain away plot holes, poorly written character development, and magical handwaving plot devices.
It’s kinda sad that A&E accomplished the exact opposite of what they set out to do, which was give people hope. At this point not many fans have much of that.
I just wanna know why they think this half of the season is “lighter” So far I haven’t felt very light….
The only way I feel lighter is that with each passing episode, my Sunday nights get more and more open due to my disinterest in their story and lack of wanting to talk about it anymore.

ParticipantIs it bad that I’d almost take another (or an extended) Neverland arc over this … stuff …? At least then Neal-in-a-Cage wasn’t Neal-in-a-Coffin. 🙁

Agreed.
And if Henry driving was supposed to be comic relief it sorta failed because I just kept thinking, “this is a terrible idea!!!”

I really liked the first two episodes this half. 315 just really changed the way I view everything.

ParticipantFrom a parodic standpoint, I’d say Once has at least given me something to laugh at, which sort of meets the criterion of being “lighter” in nature. TV.com‘s lampoon review of OUAT was pretty much spot on.

Me too! I was expecting so much from this back half. I’ve been disillusioned with the fairytale flashbacks since early on in season 2 (they started to feel kind of pointless, and instead of giving us useful information they were just tangents taking us away from the actual story). I was so so so hoping that with the mystery of Zelena and the new curse that the flashback would finally have meaning again, and while they do, I don’t like where they’ve gone. And it’s not just about Neal, but everything we’ve talked about (pacing, writing, plotty plot plot holes, OOC stuff, etc). I want to love this show. I want to love it as much as I did in the beginning, but I agree that 315 changed everything and now I can’t see the magic in it any more. Instead I see the man in the funny robe hiding behind the curtain trying to convince me that he can do magic.
I feel like a terrible friend for having convinced multiple people to watch the show recently, especially one who had given up after season 2. “Just hold out past Neverland!” I said. “There will be two compelling plots! It will finally feel like season 1 again!” I said. I should have just let her be a winner instead of dragging her back into this mess…

ParticipantThing is, the writers sort of made me lose faith which is resulting in me not thinking much of them and their ability to write not crap. It’s gotten to a point where I expect absolutely anything and everything no matter how illogical or stupid. Which is why I wouldn’t put it past them to pair him up with Emma regardless of his transgressions and lies.

Yup. This.
I have a tiny, microscopic even, bit of hope that this is all going somewhere. I’m keeping an eye on the show via this site and spoilers just in case.
But unless something truly awesome and astounding happens … well, my Sundays are just too darned busy to give an hour to something that makes me so unhappy.

ParticipantAnother essay I came across (some language stuff)
From that essay:
“… but what really, truly upsets me is when we portray an actual violent action as sexy, disregarding the violence because it’s done by an attractive person. that’s not okay and will never be okay..”
There is a well-documented cognitive bias known as the halo effect. Here’s an official definition:
“Also known as the physical attractiveness stereotype and the “what is beautiful is good” principle, the halo effect, at the most specific level, refers to the habitual tendency of people to rate attractive individuals more favorably for their personality traits or characteristics than those who are less attractive. Halo effect is also used in a more general sense to describe the global impact of likeable personality, or some specific desirable trait, in creating biased judgments of the target person on any dimension. Thus, feelings generally overcome cognitions when we appraise others.”
(Standing, L. G., in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods, Volume 1, 2004)What we’re witnessing is a psychological phenomenon. This principle has been documented in studies done of employers favoring attractive candidates for job positions and teachers perceiving attractive students as more capable.
