ParticipantWhen Once was begun, A&E knew they would some day be going to Oz. I venture to guess, they had an idea of how Oz would play out. They also, clearly, intended for the concept of balefire to be important given that they named a character after it. Did they plan to put the two in the same arc? Not sure, but if they did – and for the sake of this argument let’s say they did – it doesn’t seem insane that they would intend for Baelfire to be important in their story about balefire and Oz. Which incidentally would have been planned out long before S2/S3 hiatus, so perhaps then this was the plan all along, along with return, and the character to die for real – demanded by story – has yet to come? I think there are a few breadcrumbs that indicate this is the case, but the entire fanbase has glommed onto the Neal thing as the real deal, and as well they should. I still posture A&E would have a strong case for trolling their own fanbase!
I’ve had the same thoughts as you, and I’ve dared to dream a dream. If they manage to pull that off, it would be quite something. It would still ring hollow to me, but at least I could once again believe that the writers have been true to their original vision and the story that they wanted to tell all along. The song “I Dreamed a Dream” pretty much sums up what this show has become for me. The show used to be filled with endless wonder but now has become a dream of shame.
Rather than being the story of happy endings, the story has become “Les Miserables” but without all of the poetry of painful experiences being lined with silver threads of hope, redemption or faith. At least, in Victor Hugo’s novel, it was a story meant to reflect reality without any pretense of fairytale endings. Hugo’s story about is about true repentance, redemption and faith in the midst of real pain, suffering and loss. At least Jean Valjean was a truly contrite and repentant former convict who sought to sacrifice himself to give his daughter happiness. The truly heinous character, Javier, got what was coming to him. He met his just end. The story, while tragic, at least gave its protagonist a truly honorable death.

ParticipantI agree with a lot of what Phee said (been doing that a lot lately) on the past few pages. Cause yeah the thought had crossed my mind that the fact they keep making Hook seem like a shady guy, is deliberate. Here’s hoping.
Thing is, the writers sort of made me lose faith which is resulting in me not thinking much of them and their ability to write not crap. It’s gotten to a point where I expect absolutely anything and everything no matter how illogical or stupid. Which is why I wouldn’t put it past them to pair him up with Emma regardless of his transgressions and lies.
Once has made me jaded! 🙁

We’re just like Nealfire now, conditioned to expect bad things and to not have much hope that things will get better, and I really wish I could find that awesome Tumblr post that had that full description of it to post here but I can’t find it at work. 🙁

I used to be such an apologist for the show. “They’ll get to this plot hole, don’t worry!” and such. After Neal’s death, it’s like the rose tinted glasses came off. I find it hard to overlook or explain away plot holes, poorly written character development, and magical handwaving plot devices.

It’s kinda sad that A&E accomplished the exact opposite of what they set out to do, which was give people hope. At this point not many fans have much of that.

Irony.
