It’s been two days since Scott’s high school graduation, and I’m still an emotional wreck. He’s already talking about college in the fall, living on campus, hanging out with his friends….and while Roger is sitting here laughing and joking with our son, I’m the one needing a tissue every ten minutes. I went from changing diapers eighteen years ago, to getting ready to see my oldest son leave the house. And soon….it won’t be long till his sisters and baby brother follow suit….twelve years from now, Roger and I are going to be an empty nest, and I’ve no clue what to do!

While Roger’s at work…this will be me 12 years from now, while I’m at the house with nothing to do and no kids to come home to tell me all about their school day!

Maybe some of you have already discussed this, but I just came across it when surfing Barbara Barnett’s blog for another show.Ā  I thought she’d given up on OUAT completely, but she reviewed the finale.

    BB’s S4 Finale Review

She ends on a hopeful note, seeing potential in where they left the story but much as I wish I could share that, this show just brings out too much of a cynical side for me to share her opinion.Ā Ā  I read the news that Socha is not a regular now, and somehow I felt like we’d predicted that even before this season 4 started, in a discussion awhile back when I was grouping Will with Archie, Red,Ā  and Neal, as characters who weren’t perfect heroes but were not selfish enough to be in theĀ  “villains to woobify”Ā  category and therefore unlikely to be interesting enough for the writing staff to do much with them long term.

Of course, that might be where Rumple is now without the Dark One powers.Ā  I see these writers picking one of two paths for Rumple right now–either they stick to the idea that his “core” is a ruthless, power hungry man who will continue to try to fight to regain his power as the Dark One, or they’ll leave him in a coma until an episode mid-season (so not a huge cliffhanger break spot) where they write him out of the show.

Again, two paths for writing him out, like August or Neal.Ā  They canĀ  attempt to give the character a (in my opinion) unearned happy Beauty & Beast Rumbelle-pleasing Shipper ending to make some of thoseĀ  fans happy, and push the explanations off-screen as to how he earned back Belle’s trust, or if they go the “Neal” path, they’ll have Rumple sacrifice himself and Belle will accept his death and move on, and we’ll see his gravestone next to Neal’s, with “beloved husband and father” (totally side-stepping the suggestion they’d gotten divorced).Ā Ā Ā  Belle will be all alone looking sad at the grave, except for whatever characters the writers want to give some screentime too, regardless of whether it makes sense for them to be mourning Rumple., so probably Hook, maybe Hood, maybe Archie for his once-a-season-cameo. Ā  But I basically expect the writers to avoid writing a scene where characters who ought to have complicated emotions talk about them because they don’t really do that on this show.

I’m also not as excited by Camelot as its never held that much fascination for me, but I realize it resonates with a lot of people, so I think Camelot will tempt some old viewers to return and some new ones to check out the show, but hard to imagine anything creating a draw as Frozen did.

On another note, I started watching izombie (the two OUAT alums are so much better on that show, Anders is chilling, and McIver’s range is good), and was reading some comments in this article about some developments in the show, and it really reminded me of things with OUAT , Neal and Emma.Ā  Basically there were a lot of people upset in the comments at the idea that the “endgame” relationship of the main character would be with a character she has a past with that the audience didn’t get to see unfold–they want to see the first meeting, and everything from that point. They also don’t care for narrative reassurances about how two characters envisioned being together and spending their lives together (that is, being willing to commit to each other) as much as seeing on-screen tension filled with chemistry and the discovery of wanting a deeper commitment.Ā Ā  I think I’ve read similar things about Grimm (pre-the-crazy-nose-dive of Juliette).Ā  I didn’t feel the same, and liked either possibility, or rather think there’s room for story either way, whether that’s about how two people manage to overcome some supernatural obstacle that breaksĀ  them up, or whether two people just meet, fall in love and go on from there.Ā Ā Ā Ā  I guess I don’t care if I see the relationship’s first moments or not, so long as the characters seem like they are bringing out good things overall in each other (normal conflicts that arise for drama aside).

Anyway, I’m out of time to connect that further to what happened on OUAT or what will happen next, but hope everyone’s having a good week.
