Despite all of these obvious acts and symbols of betrayal going on with CS, I’m still bracing for a CS TLK and proposal at the end of S5. That is how this show is now; it’s all about villains getting their happy endings. Plus, there is an obvious parallel between Nimue betraying Merlin and Hook and Emma betraying each other. Then there’s the heavy-handed foreshadowing:

Emma: Nimue was Merlin’s true love.The fact that Emma called Nimue Merlin’s “true love” (after Nimue’s spirit convinced Hook to murder Merlin to cast the dark curse) just goes to show how warped this show’s (and by extension Emma’s) definition of true love has become. Emma and Hook’s names being inscribed on Excalibur gets romanticized, despite it obviously being a symbol of their mutual betrayal and hurt of one another. The ring that Liam gave Hook is a symbol of a pact made with Hades to mass murder his entire crew, yet that ring is now a symbol of CS and might be used as an eventual engagement ring by the end of the season. How romantic is that? *twitch*

But more seriously, I just can’t understand how the writers aren’t aware of this. Surely, one is a random occurrence, two is a coincidence, but three and more is a pattern, no? And even if they are that thick, don’t they have a “reception” team of interns that are paid (poorly) to troll tumblr/twitter etc and report on how the audience is reacting? Or something? Surely someone must be pointing out that at least a portion of the audience has noticed this?
I think I’ve said this before, but it almost looks like what you’d see if a media product were to be created under conditions of political or ideological censure (at least, from what I remember of my Soviet cinema classes back in grad school…with a minor difference that a lot of Soviet cinema was actually good). It’s a pretty common strategy: the text is ideologically correct and towing the party line, but there’s a subtext that runs counter to the official message. Clearly, there is no political censure hanging over OUAT, but this is too egregious to just be sloppy writing.
And even if they are that thick, don’t they have a “reception” team of interns that are paid (poorly) to troll tumblr/twitter etc and report on how the audience is reacting? Or something? Surely someone must be pointing out that at least a portion of the audience has noticed this?
You would think so…but I often doubt it. I honestly think the writers are deaf and blind to the fandom and the fandom’s reactions. Did they, for instance, notice that last night people got “Emma deserves better” trending on Twitter? Or that Once Upon a Hook has become a popular saying?
