I think Hook asks Emma the question, and she doesn’t know the answer because of “fog” from the curse. It’s probably part of the conversation where he hands her the paper and tells her to go to Neal’s apartment. Hook’s goal after all is to get her to remember–but it’s interesting and significant that even he realizes how important Neal is to her. I don’t think the Dreamcatcher will restore her memories but as we said, Belle’s teacup wasn’t enough alone either. The potion is an integral part, and this potion may be different anyway. We were all wondering how Emma would drink out of a talisman, remember, aside from shipping we pondred “what does she soak her baby blanket in potion and stuff it in her mouth just as a baby would do!” So it never made sense to think she’d have a talisman we’d seen before that would let her “drink” the cure in it. It’s not daunting in the least to here the final push to Emma’s memories requires a conversation with Henry and drinking the potion, nor that Hook gives it to Emma. Whatever his feelings for her, Hook seems aware that Neal continues to play a role in her life even when not there.
If Emma does go to Neal’s apartment this way, that means the writers spent time producing that space. They preserved all those items, kept it around, and staged the room again, and that’s a LOT of work to go to for a minor character if they’re trying to say the character is not important. Screen time is limited, particularly in a premiere episode where they want to feature most of the cast and have a lot of exposition to unload. I think its a pretty significant thing.

Most likely, Emma’s explanation will be simple and similar to Neal’s explanation for why he landed in the Enchanted Forest in 3×1. He told Mulan that he ended up in the Enchanted Forest because he thought about growing up there. Neal also said that portals take a person to wherever he or she thinks of. Perhaps Emma likewise thought about New York and Neal as she was leaving SB and that thought guided her “home” when she crossed the town line. Even though she and Henry were then cursed, that thought of home subconsciously took them to NYC.

@Slurpeez108: that’s a really interesting idea. The message of 3×11 was “go home” (literally). But for Emma, she’s never had a real home, except her car. So the closet she’s ever gotten to home was with Neal–so she took her car and her son and went home, to where Neal was.

I don’t think the writers intend to be obvious about SF for a LONG time, because their goal is to make something that seems inevitable and yet impossible at the same time. I’d say they’ve got that with SF. Everyone says “how predictable” Henry, Emma and Neal being a family reunited would be–and yet, every episode shows us all these obstacles that get in their way, but also shows us a lot of understanding and concern between them. Things pull them apart but something draws them together as well, and we know part of it is that they love each other (and Henry too!)

I wonder Hook time with Emma makes him realize on how much Emma loves Neal. Because of the look in her eyes when she mentions him. And perhaps his time with Neal he realizes that Neal feels the same. Perhaps his time with Emma and Neal allows him to see their love is the real deal. Just like their mutual love for their son, Henry. The center of both of their world.
It is interesting based on the promo pics that it seems once again we might have parallel of Emma and Neal in their respective journey. We have Neal with Snowing who appears to be determine to reunite with his family and Hook trying to convince Emma that her family is in danger. It seems like the flashback and present stories between Emma and Neal would be about Home, what is that to them. And if that is how they kick off the season will darn skippy I’m happy with that.
