ParticipantAgreed, Heather, as INFURIATING as it is, it actually probably bodes well for neither Neal or Belle dying, because if they were gonna be dying, ABC would be promoting them right now. Due to the lack of promotion of those characters, it would be a complete media non-event if either of them died, and you know the media will want to talk and talk and talk about the death when it happens.
I actually saw a tweet from an EvilRegal who said that Neal and Belle aren’t even their faves, and they still thought it was incredibly wrong for them to have been excluded. So it’s not just us and our bias, even people who aren’t that fussed on the characters were put off by it.

See how easy that was, ABC?

KeymasterAnd I’ve seen every season of LOST and Grey’s. They’ve never once left out regular actors from the full promo pics. And they have HUGE (seriously…HUGE) casts

Keymaster1) I love that you have a marketing background. You can totally impart your wisdom ANYTIME
2) You make so many good points that there was flail-age over here.
3) That picture is stunning.

Lovely photo!
I think you’re right about ABC promo being all about the “hot new thing” being Hook….he’s become the poster boy. He’s in the center panel, possibly because they think he’s now the central character. *sigh* If that’s what they’re selling now, I sure don’t want to buy it. And when hardcore fans from S1 start rethinking their loyalty to the show, then that spells trouble for the show.

ParticipantArtseediva, I’m no marketing pro, but that’s what I’ve been thinking as well, in relation to all the Hook promo. Perhaps him getting his own panel in the middle of the big poster is just another step in their plan to hype him up some more in order to get the most mileage out of his death.
PS. Your new art is great!

ParticipantI’m on the way to a meeting so this won’t be proofed.. just going to spew for a minute. I’m back to the hopeless feeling that left me turning my back on everything during this hiatus. I do however, have one thought about ABC’s promotional department that could explain things in a manner of which I would feel sorta okay with– but, I’m not overly optimistic. I work in marketing, I’ve been a designer and creative professional for over 10 years. I know the game, and I know that the entertainment world is brutal. It’s about money, period. ABC cares about the fans, but not enough to do things that would make them happy over doing things that gets viewership and a following outside of the core folks (like us here). They want buzz. They want to feed the ones who will give them views. In their mind, right now, that is Hook. His guyliner, accent and leather have weakened the knees of females around the viewing radius– and he’s selling for them. (Hypothetically) So here you are, you’re ABC and you’re faced with a situation that your “hot new thing” is being killed off. He’ll be gone by the season’s end. Do you phase him out of marketing to prepare his audience, or do you get them falling at his feet for the next piece of evidence that he’s indeed the next big thing in your main character’s life. You reel them in and make them think all is well.. market the season with him as an (assumed) major selling point. You milk the last “dime” out of him before he’s gone. I don’t for a second believe he was ever meant to be long-term and I still stand by the fact that if the death is story-driven it IS. NOT. NEAL. However, I would be lying if i wasn’t skeptical that MRJ wants out and is leaving and they’d try tooth and nail to convince us that it was planned all along. I pray it’s not that because it ruins the show and my faith I’ve placed in the team that makes this show happen. I don’t know if I’m watching or not come Sunday. I’m on the fence but I will say that I believe ABC knows what they are doing by leaving Neal out and implanted Hook in EVERYTHING.. even if it means tap dancing all over my heart. In other news, I tried to cheer myself up over break. Not sure it worked.
BAH, I needed to see something pretty and you provided it!! That is wonderful and now I’m trying not to cry again at work. Thanks for sharing it!! <3 🙂
I actually have some marketing experience myself and I totally agree with your speculation. It does make sense to promote the crap out of
is one of their more popular characters (let’s ignore the fact that he’s not even the most popular GUY on this show for a moment) and then he gets ripped away from the fandom which gives the show buzz and excitement later in the season. A&E are right in that they don’t do the promotion for the show; they’re the writers and are trying to tell the story. I can’t see any logical reason why the WRITERS are putting in all these little SwanFire moments only to rip them away later on and giving us whiplash with it. ABC was given the entire season’s stories back in the fall and IF THEY ARE NOT LYING and this death was planned from the start of S3, then ABC would definitely want to get more bang for their buck and make it a huge deal for the fans. A huge deal isn’t a character not included on their big ‘panel of doom’ dying halfway through the season or whenever it happens on screen. That’s a cop out and personally, I think the fact that one character appeared on a panel all by himself really makes him primary suspect #1 for me. We speculated what feels like eons ago that Emma would have to go through a lot of things personally to really figure out that she loves and wants to be with Neal. I think S3B is part of that journey for her to figure out her heart and everything that she goes through, including whatever it is with Hook and Walsh for that matter, is part of her finally finding that peace and forgiveness inside that she needs to have for Neal so she will eventually let him back into her heart. This panel thing REALLY SUCKS, don’t get me wrong, but if ABC is using it to give the spoiler of doom more bang for the buck, then hopefully we will look back on all of this two months from now and smack our heads and laugh about how stressed out we were over it. No more BTS garbage, no more paparazzi speculation, no more thinking that MRJ would be unhappy and want out of the show (that is total garbage in my mind…this guy LOVES this show and he loves his castmates; you can tell and seriously, why make him a regular cast member and then kill him off AGAIN?! Makes no sense whatsoever no matter what ANYONE says), and NO MORE BELIEVING ABC about anything.
Ugh, I promised I wouldn’t rant again. Sorry guys. 🙁

Ratings and time will tell, I guess.
But it’s very unfair. I told Adam in a tweet that ABC makes us feel small. That’s how I feel. Insignificant because I’m being told that several of my favorites aren’t important and therefore I’m not important.

Requoted for truth. I have watched GA since the freaking PILOT and they have never left anyone off their promotional stuff. They’ve even included people I can’t stand so I’m not being biased with that observation, LOL 😉 I feel like the ABC twits don’t realize how much of what they do affects the fandom now in the wake of the social media explosion. They need someone competent on their staff who can monitor various websites, tumblr, Instagram, and Twitter much better so they realize how much what they do affects people. If they knew how many fans were upset right now and ready to give up the show, I think they would start rethinking their strategies since no viewers = no ratings which also = no AD REVENUE and we all know that this business is all about MONEY. 😉

KeymasterI just don’t get why ABC thinks it’s a good idea to leave off 3 characters. They know the fandom will explode in anger and rage. They know the headache it causes for Adam on Twitter. So why not save themselves the trouble and just put everyone on a poster. It’s obviously easy. The fans already made a quick mock up.
