Neal and Emma have had a few heartbreaking conversations, but then as always they were parted. They gotta be in one room long enough to talk!

Tell me about it! Emma was on her way to have that lunch date with Neal when that plan got side-railed due to Peter Pan. I just hope Neal didn’t mistake Emma’s being sidetracked as reason to leave her alone. Based on his determination in 3×12 to return to her and Henry though, I’d say he realized why Emma didn’t show wasn’t because of him, but because of her concern for their son. I take it as a good sign that Emma and Neal’s lunch was cut short, because the longer they drag that out, the more certain I am that once they finally do talk in depth alone, they’ll finally be on their way to resolving a lot of their issues. And that could cause them to reconcile and perhaps even to give it another go romantically. The writers have to drag out the unresolved issues between Emma and Neal for as long as possible (by adding a curse, throwing in a fake fiancé, putting in a pining pirate), so as to prolong the will-they-or-won’t-they drama that is the love story between Emma and Neal.

It’s such a tearing situation to be in as a fan. I want them together now because they belong together and I don’t want them to exhaust the story to the point where we stop caring. On the other hand, I know how rewarding it is to have Caskett together on Castle now after what feels like a MILLION seasons. I don’t want them to wait TOO long, because there’s plenty of direction to take as a show once they are together, but at the same time, the perfect conclusion is the happy ending they find with each other.

Agreed. It’s such a fine line that TV writers have to walk. If you put them together right away you loose the anticipation, but if you never do, people stop caring. Look how long it took for Meredith and Derek on GA; or Booth and Bones on Bones.

    Just hold tight!

    x A pretty thing.

It is a fine line writers walk between building anticipation and dropping the ball. Rumbelle is a good case in point, since that relationship drew in a lot of viewers initially, but there is no way the writers can give everyone what they want right now, because Rumple cannot have his happy ending this early in the game. As Robert Carlyle said in the special “Wicked is Coming,” he thinks happy endings have to be earned. Otherwise, the characters cease to be as compelling. (Just look at Snowing as an example, whom many fans feel are boring and too predictable). Even though Rumple made the ultimate sacrifice, he’s still in the midst of his redemption journey while he’s under the control of the Wicked Witch. Nevertheless, the writers cannot completely ignore fans’ wishes for Belle-Rumple interactions, because that would be dropping the ball.  I think Belle is about to go on an epic journey with Neal to save Rumple, which is good for both of the characters getting “meatier” roles.

Also, it’s far too early for Emma to have her happy ending, because as the writers have said, this is her modern-day fairytale; she may have had a glimpse of what that would involve (i.e. living a normal, happy life in NYC with her son), but she still has witches to defeat and winged monkeys to slay. Likewise, Neal still has many miles to go and a father to save before he can make his way home to Emma and Henry. In other words, Emma and Neal cannot be together yet because they truly are each other’s destination, home, and idea of a happy ending. Hopefully, we’ll get to see them together by the end of S3, but I think we won’t see them truly being a couple again until S4.

    Interesting….

NOW REUNITED WITH HER PARENTS IN STORYBROOKE, WILL EMMA ASK ABOUT NEAL ASAP?

“For sure,” says Jennifer Morrison. “No matter what, Neal is Henry’s father, and Emma wants her son to have a father in his life. So she is definitely concerned about whether he made it back to Storybrooke as well.”

There’s more stuff in that article but I liked this part very much and I’m glad we got a little confirmation that Neal hasn’t been forgotten and that Emma asks about him right away. Love that Jen is always diplomatic about her answers and in this case, she’s absolutely right. More than anything else, Neal is Henry’s father and she needs to know if he’s okay or not for Henry’s sake. Him not being seen in town yet may also be one of the reasons she uses to keep Henry from getting his memories back right away. I like that she’s keeping true to her words that Henry’s well being comes first for her. There’s another part of the article that hints at more EF backstory for Neal that connects with Belle’s story which we kind of all ready knew so I left that off my post here. We knew they were going to be heading off for Operation Crocodile soon! 😉

This needs to be on every page now. 😉

Funny that you guys are talking about the perils and challenges of writing couples because we were just talking about that in chat last night. I agree that you don’t want to get a couple together too soon because the payoff doesn’t mean as much. I went through the whole Meredith/Derek thing on GA and while the journey was LONG and challenging and very trying on my patience, I loved their final reunion so much and post its totally have a new meaning for me now. 😉 I’m glad they finally got and kept them together and have also managed to keep them interesting for the most part. The worry that writers need to think about with audiences though is that attention spans are totally shrinking and if you keep couples apart too long, people lose interest in them and leave the show. 🙁

I have a theory about how to write for couples that I really think more writers need to consider before they plot out their stories. It’s crazy easy to come up with random scenarios that keep your couples apart; it’s a lot more challenging to put them together AND give them a great story or keep them interesting. I really wish more writers would challenge themselves to write stories about couples dealing with situations TOGETHER instead of it always being about them breaking up/getting together again. Currently there’s a couple on Chicago Fire that are going through some tough times but they’re going through them TOGETHER and their story actually showing the journey of how they’re growing stronger as a couple through those tough times. There are good ways to do that for couples and I think in S4, A&E need to challenge themselves more by writing some of our fave couples (mainly Rumbelle & SwanFire IMO) actually being together but having to overcome some sort of situation or problem as a team. You really can’t keep couples apart forever in this day and age because people don’t have the patience anymore (and IMO, it also gets really draggy and repetitive which is not fun to watch). Let Snowing or OutlawQueen or someone else have the separation/fight to find each other again story and give the couples that have gone through more angst in two seasons than most people have gone through in a lifetime a chance to talk and be together as a couple so we can enjoy a change of pace for them for a while. Do we really need another big bad for S4A? I would totally watch an entire half season of everyone just trying to deal with life in SB. We could have Snowing trying to be good parents, Emma & Neal working through their pasts, Rumbelle being all domestic, OutlawQueen figuring out how to have a life together, Henry’s custodial situation could be rife with comedic moments, and the others could all be intertwined with their stories as needed and there wouldn’t be a need to have another big bad until S4B (maybe they lay the clues for the big bad throughout the first part of the season and take care of that bad guy in the second half). I don’t want Once to turn into Scandal where every single season or week, SOMETHING.BAD.IS.HAPPENING. and they don’t really talk to each other. 😮

Season 4: The Kitchen Table season….I endorse it. 😉 #themoreyouknow

About the TVLine article JMo is very diplomatic I agree. But I think while Emma might ask for Neal, she’s going to claim it’s “for Henry only” but in reality she wants to know where he is for herself, as well as for Henry. Also, keeping Hook full time in his pirate outfit only serves as a reminder that Hoko is first and foremost a pirate, like he himself said

There are good ways to do that for couples and I think in S4, A&E need to challenge themselves more by writing some of our fave couples (mainly Rumbelle & SwanFire IMO) actually being together but having to overcome some sort of situation or problem as a team. There is a second sneak peek of Emma at Granny’s with her parents and Hook when Grumpy and Happy barge in to tell them they’re down to 4 dwarfs and that people are missing all over the place. Emma then asks about Neal, and no one seems to know. Hook looks annoyed and/or jealous that Emma would ask such a question. Hook even mutters that Neal will turn up “he always does.” It sounds to me like Hook is either really jealous and/or hiding something. Does Hook know where Neal is or what happened to him?!

you know that’s interesting. That’s not actually how I interpreted it. I thought he was trying to comfort Emma instead of sounding bitter. But I see what you’re saying. Every time Hook thinks he’s getting somewhere with Emma, Neal somehow pops in–either his very self (like in “Ariel”) or his name like in 312.
