ParticipantRumplesGirl wrote: you know that’s interesting. That’s not actually how I interpreted it. I thought he was trying to comfort Emma instead of sounding bitter. But I see what you’re saying. Every time Hook thinks he’s getting somewhere with Emma, Neal somehow pops in–either his very self (like in “Ariel”) or his name like in 312.
Yes, every time Hook thinks he may finally get a chance “to win” Emma, she usually brings up Neal or Neal actually shows up. That has got to make the pirate really jealous, which is why I got the impression Hook sounded resentful, rather than reassuring. It’s totally in character of Hook, who has been selfish for so long and thought mostly of his own happiness. He’s not too concerned about Neal, but he pretends to be for the sake of impressing Emma. It goes back to what he told Emma that he wanted to be a “good friend” to Neal by letting Emma’s parents know Neal was captive in the Echo Cave. And yet, good friends don’t vie for the same woman, especially when one has a prior, unresolved history with the other. Maybe he’s concerned deep down, but his feelings of jealousy cloud that.

KeymasterRIP CaptainFire. Seriously, I’m telling you..A and E threw out 222 and are hoping no one noticed.

Seriously! And people wonder why not everyone is enamored with Killian. His character is so divided internally. On the one hand, he kept Bae’s sword and his robe, implying he is sentimental and does care about Bae, and yet, Hook has been really rude to Neal. Yes, Hook told Emma’s parents that Neal was alive in 3×6, but I think he did so to impress Emma about what he’d do for a “good friend” like Neal. Yet, Hook continues to vie for the same woman. It’s almost like Hook is split between seeing Neal as the son of Milha and as a real contender. To Hook, it’s like a big competition to see who can “win” Emma’s heart. One minute, Hook is trying to make himself look good to Emma, yet in the next moment, he’s making a druken pass at Tinkerbell and telling Neal what a loser he is and saying he’ll fail in 3×10. Hook said he’d step back for Henry’s sake, yet then turned around and said Neal would fail. Then he went right back to vying for Emma in 3×12. Something isn’t adding up.
Then in 3×12 Hook said, “I’m not here because of Neal.” It’s almost like Hook has completely disregarded the guy he claims to care for, and now in 3×13, he sounds like a jealous teenager just because Emma asked where Neal is. Heaven forbid Emma asks where the father of her child really is. If Hook really loved Neal like a son, he’d be just as concerned as Emma would be if Henry were the one missing. Yet, Hook is more like a man-child who looks jealous and sounds resentful that Neal always has a way of turning up. I’ll take that as foreshadowing that Neal will in fact turn up again, even if he’s presumed dead or missing. Even if it takes a while, I have every faith Neal will return to Emma and his son. To quote Hook, “He’ll turn up Swan. He always does.”

ParticipantThis is definitely something I have pondered with the whole CaptainFire thing. They decided the death in-between seasons, so maybe that’s why there was a sudden about-face in Hook’s regard for Baelfire/Neal? If, I mean, he is the spoiler that shall not be named, and he sacrifices himself… that’s the only good reason, story-wise, I can see them holding off on what they were planning with CaptainFire… til the end of the season… Granted, it’s not very responsible storytelling, to just cut it off so abruptly in order to bring it up later… I feel like there definitely should have been an ease into the whole “now I’m bitter at Neal 2 days later after I just turned my ship around to not kill everyone in honor of him” thing. But. We shall see. Now I don’t even HOPE it’s Hook for the sake of CaptainFire.. just saying maybe that’s why they did what they did… even if it wasn’t the best way to make it linger..
I also feel like they canNOT just go on with the show without Emma knowing Neal’s entire story…so glad she found out about Wendy/The Darlings, but she still has yet to know how he even made it to NL… What an ep that would be to have Emma finding out about Hook giving up Bae to Pan, while we flashback to her being unwanted by her foster/adoptive families… *cry*

KeymasterThey might be saving CaptainFire for the end of the season, but I’m not very hopeful on that front. I think A and E decided that they weren’t that interested in it because they thought the Triangle would be a better angle. Which sucks because it turns out that it hasn’t been very positive for the show at all. They plan on devloping CaptainFire, they best do so right quick. There needs to be some sort of advance there. As to the peek, I don’t know…I’m not sure I agree with you guys. I think Hook IS jealous but I also think he is very concerned.

Like I wrote above, I think Hook is deeply divided between thinking of Neal as Milha’s son, and seeing Neal as a real contender. Any real hope I had last summer after Hook turned around his ship in Bae’s honor in 2×22 and toasted Neal’s memory in 3×1 fizzled out by 3×7 when Hook nearly got himself and Neal killed in “Dark Hollow.” Perhaps it’s like CrownedWithLaurels said; maybe the writers are holding off on showing Hook wanting to help his son-figure Neal out by reuniting him with his family. Yet, the Hook they’re showing currently in 3×12 and 3×13 still seems mostly concerned with his own self-interests rather than with Neal’s. Neal’s biological father was willing to sacrifice himself to give Neal that second chance at happiness, and yet so far, Hook seems determined to come between Neal and Emma. So unless Hook does an about-face by the end of S3, I remain very skeptical of Hook’s motives. Right now, I get the vibe that Hook mostly resents Emma’s concern for Neal.

KeymasterI do see what you’re saying Slurpeez. I think he’s deeply conflicted. But I’m also wondering if A and E ever plan on exploring that conflict because up until now it just keeps getting rug swept

ParticipantJust saw the
new sneak peek! I’m super happy that Emma asked about Neal. Now we can get people off of A&E’s back about Emma not even showing concern for Neal, OMG she doesn’t love him! Yada yada yada.
But!
I’ll admit I’m a little nervous about this new spoiler from TVLine: “We’ve thus far seen the Charmings, of course, and familiar faces such as Regina, Belle, Dr. Whale and Archie pop up in a sneak peek that’s out there. Most simply said, “Everyone who is not dead” was returned by the new curse,” Eddy Kitsis answers.”
Way to freak people out Eddy! T_T *sigh* I’ll admit there are times where my mind may be infected with a slight bit of doubt. But after reading the rest of the spoilers, I’m fairly confident that this season Neal is a big part of the mystery that has to be solved. Along with who cast the cure and who WW is. It smells like season 1’s crime solvers case theme all over again, MM, the heart, Is the curse real? Which I thoroughly enjoyed! YAY!

Participant^I can see why people would be concerned for Neal. The new spoiler for 3×13 confirms he’s missing. And A&E hinted that “everyone who is not dead” was returned by the curse. By saying that hint in light of the spoiler of doom, it’s like the writers are prompting viewers to the conclusion that oh, Neal must be the one to die. However, that seems like a huge misdirection to me, and way too obvious. Let’s say that no one can find Neal, and people start to assume the worst. If you think about it though, if Neal had died in the EF, where’s his body? It would have to be in fairytale land, since only the living were brought over with the curse. If that is the case, then even if the people of SB assume the worst and hold a memorial in honor of Neal in 3×16, it would be more like a fighter pilot who gets shot down but whose body is never found. And you know the old saying, “no body, no death.”
Plus, there is no way, from a narrative perspective, that Neal’s death could be story-driven; not while Emma has unresolved feelings for him, Henry’s without his true memories, and Rumple is absent. For all we know, Neal is indeed a winged monkey, being held captive under the town clock, or is in Oz. We don’t know at what point he and Belle may have been separated. Maybe Neal was brought over to Sb along with everybody else, but when he tried to leave the town to find Emma, he got turned into a winged monkey. Snow confirmed that people aren’t only missing but are in fact turning into flying primates.
