ParticipantDitto, RG. We still laugh. We still live our lives. But there is a natural physical response to stress that just has to take its course. Being severely disappointed in something you’ve loved and that has brought so much happiness to your life is normal. It is part of life. It is Tuesday afternoon and it just happened Monday. Many of us have been with this show for 2 and a half years. Neal’s death would have been hard, for sure, no matter what. But the way it happened adds a completely different element to the mourning process.
I was on a cruise and watched 221-Second Star to the Right on the first night of our cruise. I cried. I was amazed. I was deeply touched. I was pretty much sure that he was still alive, but I cried over his death. But guess what? I had an AMAZING time on our cruise. That was the very first day of our cruise, actually. And I was fine for the rest of it.
Yes we are in mourning, but the majority of the anger and stress is coming from the complete about-face the story did. I mean heck, supposedly Neal was just now understanding what it took for his father to come find him… WHEN WE JUST HEARD HIM SAY THAT ON THEIR WAY BACK FROM NL. It doesn’t make sense from a logical standpoint. It’s redundant. Him finding a way to NL was where the understanding came from. That was enough to make amends with his father and understand what he went through. And now we get another story and Neal wants to die again because he finally realizes what it took for his father to find him?? It’s a crazy cycle. It’s repeating what has already happened in the story. It’s retconning. It’d be like Hook saying “Oh BT DUBS, I just decided 5 minutes ago to give up my revenge for Milah and help you all.” UM that already happened and he’s already been helping them. See???? ughSo what we see here I think in all of us isn’t this deep depression because a death has bothered us and shaken us to the core. It’s injustice. It’s frustration. And yes it is mourning too. But it’s mourning Neal AND the show… Something very different than just being upset over the death of a character. It’s the death of a show.

ParticipantUgh! That video! I’ve accepted Neal’s gone. He’s not coming back. But watching Neal always being the sacrificial lamb just breaks my heart. He deserved better. He had a heart of gold.

ParticipantJust read Screwballninja’s latest essay about “Quiet Minds” and it made me ponder how true this part could be:
I’m horribly out of it with gossip, but the actor who plays Neal tweeted an official denial of rumors that he wanted off the show, and the writers had some interviews where they stated Neal’s death was totally story-based and not because anybody wanted off the show. You know what that means— the actor wanted off the show. Multiple official denials = confirmation. I wish you all the best, MRJ— go and find a show that makes you happy.
Do you think he really wanted to go? I keep wondering how on earth A&E could see this as a reasonable plot progression, unless they were shoehorned into giving MRJ an exit. That said, they have a consistently terrible track record when it comes to wasted potential and dropped story threads. I’ve been able to overlook those glaring inconsistencies, until Neal became a casualty of them. I wonder if we’ll ever know what really happened. 🙁

Participant@mickstemp – Thank you for that. It really sums up how I feel about this whole disaster. Trying to explain to people (without tearing up) that I’m not just upset about Neal, but the whole show, has been hard to put into words. It’s just perfect!

Participant@textbookone The text Mckstemp quoted was part of my post from page 990.. I think it got drowned out by how quickly we are all posting 🙂

YUP.
Killing his character was more than just about a stupid ship it tarnished the message and hope of the show in our eyes. You don’t have to agree but please respect that. What are we to take away when all the villains get their second chance and he ends up a victim of his own selflessness. He was a Martyr his entire life and died as one. That’s life. Wonderful message. If I wanted grim fictional realties I’d stick with Game of Thrones. At least the writing and execution is on point with horrors that take place on that show weekly .
All of this. The death of Neal was gratuitous and killed the message of hope for me. And at least GoT is well written from what I can gauge (only read the first book, and I don’t watch the HBO show). For me, Neal’s senseless death was the straw the broke the camel’s back.
Like I’ve said before, Neal’s second chance wasn’t just about romance. It was supposed to be about family. It was supposed to be about establishing healthy patterns. It was supposed to be about reconciliation. Yet, Neal’s final breaths were about none of that. It was about Neal coming so close to seeing his son again that he could taste it, but then he making the same mistake as his father by choosing dark magic. In the end, he let go so his dad could identify Zelena. He became a sacrificial lamb. Again.

ParticipantI made this last night, but I was too tired to figure out how to post it. Inspired by the belief that loved ones who pass away are somewhere, waiting for us to reunite with them when it is our time to go.
