If you’re one of the many fans up in arms over yet another curse plaguing Storybrooke on Once Upon a Time, you’re not alone.
At the close of Sunday’s episode, the Snow Queen’s (Elizabeth Mitchell) spell of Shattered Sight finally hit town, which will cause the residents of Storybrooke to turn on one another as they see the worst in themselves and those around them. Of course, this is far from the first curse to infect the Charming family and their people. First, there was the original Dark Curse; we’ve also seen a Sleeping Curse and that curse that took away everyone’s memories for a year.
Though it seems like curses have become Once’s go-to foil for our favorite heroes, star Jennifer Morrison is quick to defend the ABC series, pointing out that the show itself is a fairy tale. “Fairy tales are not literal,” she tells EW on the set of Once while filming next Sunday’s spell-centric episode. “They are very metaphorical, and they are very representative of other things.
“In order to be real with Emma, I have to look at it representationally,” she continues. “I see the curses and spells and all the crises that come our way—the snow monsters and witches and all those things—as representative of the things that come our way that are hard in life: illness, death, exams, fights with loved ones, breakups. All those things are, in real life, what would be a curse or spell in Storybrooke. Yes, we have to bond together to fight these major things, but it’s just like a family has to bond together to fight cancer, or deal with a death in the family, or a parent losing a job, or not getting into the school you want to.”
Still, Morrison recognizes that the excess of curses might make it seem like these characters are crazy for not leaving Storybrooke. “But that’s like saying we’re crazy in real life,” she says. “In real life, stuff comes your way and you have to find a way to survive and deal with it.
“The underlying message of the show is that you have to fight for the people that you love, because those are the people that are going to stand by you in those battles,” she continues. “That’s part of the appeal of the show. It is worth it every day to fight through those hard things, just like it’s worth it to fight through the curse or whatever in Storybrooke. Whether it’s a good battle or a bad battle, you’re going to fight together, and that’s what we all have to hang onto. That’s the only way I can see it. Otherwise, if you take it too literally, you’re like, ‘Well, this is kind of crazy.’”

Yes that’s true however that does not explain the constant curses nor does the idea that you have to fight for the people you love go hand in hand with CURSE!
I actually think this curse is intriguing and am ready to see what it will do to the town next week but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s the same thing again: Curse, SB in danger, 11th hour save.

Season 5 tagline will be #StorybrookeIsFlooded
And 5×01 will be called Under The Sea!

(When I first saw the subject line, I thought the actress must have gone on a Twitter rampage or lashed out at gawkers or something like that.)

However, I get the point that there have been too many curse and curse-like spells for the climax/main problem. There needs to be other types of battles that our heroes need to face.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what would do as the ”main problem” for a plot arc instead?

I think if the Spell of Shattered Sight had been depicted differently from the CGI cloud of doom used for the dark curse, then it might not have felt so repetitious. Perhaps if the spell had been depicted as a heavy gale or as a snow storm, it might’ve just looked different enough to feel new.

That’s the problem you run with fantasy. After a certain point, you’ve used all the tricks of the trade such as memory losses, witch fights, and even walking brooms. I think this show probably needs to come to a close at the end of S4. I think once the author of the book is revealed (assuming there is one) and the sorcerer’s identity confirmed, then that would be the appropriate end point for the show.

Don’t get your hopes up. Once is still doing well enough for ABC, and remains as one of their top rated shows.
Judging from that performance, I’d say we’ll at least see a Season 5 before the show comes to a close.

I was just expressing the opinion that I think it would be more natural for the show to conclude at the end of s4 rather than to drag it out another season. The show may be performing better than other shows in ABC at present, but the network is known to have a problem on its hands in that it has had a series of flops in comparison to other network channels.
In recent years, ABC has thrown more shows on the air than other networks and thus endured even more failure. It’s ratings continue to decline and for the 2013-14 TV season ABC was third in total viewers and fourth in the key age 18-49 demo. That erases the storyline that NBC is the cellar dweller and CBS is only for the elderly: ABC can now be mocked on both counts. Link
So while ABC might consider Once to be a success in comparison to its other shows that get canceled, the show went form around 10 million viewers in 4×1 to around 6 million in 4×9. The show might hold steady, but that is a very heavy loss. Frozen brought in enough curious viewers for one episode, but the show’s plot couldn’t maintain them. So, the network may offer the show another season to get syndication, but I think that would be a detriment to the quality of the show, which has been in decline for a while now. It seems at least one TV critic would agree with me.
ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee, who has a tendency to charm while talking in bland generalities about how all the new shows are fantastic and “delicious,” met the press this morning and once again failed to be humble and made excuses left and right (according to Lee, “Once Upon a Time” doesn’t get the attention it deserves because it’s a family show, not because it’s a blah show). Season 5 would be interesting to see where they can possibly go with it. (but you dont watch! No I don’t. I shadow watch. Here me out I’m being semi nice. 😛 )
I mean we have
Season 1 Emma -new family-break curse
Season 2: Emma-post curse, past, family,
Season 3: Emma-save son, mother, home
Season 4: Emma this season come to terms with magic, new relationship???, acceptance of her self
Season 5 Emma-??? where do you go with it.
Even outside of Emma
Season 1:Curse, Belief
Season 2: We are both, Family
season 3: Home
Season 4: Never give up on those you love?????
Season 5: All good things must come to an end???? Parting of Ways. Thanksgiving??? Happy Endings???
Just curious on how can you come up with an a nice ending with the book being used for the second half for season 4 and that seems like something reserved for season 5.
Also wonder if there will be another time jump.
Here is a plot twist instead of past vs present. Future vs Present. Like things that are happening in the future being played out in the present time which is the future’s past. I think I confused myself.
Blame my sickness for all of this.
perhaps should take medicine and go to asleep.
