For Once Upon a Time’s 100th episode, the series’ heroes and villains are going to hell. Literally. Waiting for them in the underworld, which resembles a twisted version of Storybrooke, is a new big bad played by Greg Germann — and EW has an exclusive first look!
“Hades is such a fun, endlessly creative challenge,” Germann says of his flame-licked fiend. “Anything goes. The creators bring him to life on the page with the same out-of-the-box unpredictability that they bring to the rest of the show. They strike the perfect balance between keeping things grounded and letting things fly — sometimes literally.”
Adds executive producer Edward Kitsis: “Hades is a very dangerous fellow, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun being the Devil.” Fun for Hades, not so much for the denizens of hell, including Hook (Colin O’Donoghue), whom our heroes have come to rescue after he sacrificed himself in the midseason finale.

February 4, 2016 at 12:16 pm #316022MatthewPaulModeratorWhen I first saw this, I thought it was a photo a fan made up, but then I realized that a fan would have done a better job. I actually thought he looked better without the blue hair, when we got photos of him on set. Maybe it’ll look better in motion, or they’ll at least improve upon the effect after seeing the fan reaction? Perhaps he won’t even have the blue hair all the time, because it would save the cost of adding the CGI hair for all of his screentime?

Like the blue hair was such a distinctive characteristic of Hades from the Disney film. Does it translate well to the tv screen on an actual actor? Ehh not sure. But maybe it will be better going forward. I mean, that’s sort of what a real actor with CGI imposed blue wavy hair would look like. So I’m not sure how much better they could do. I think it looks ridiculous, but after a couple scenes, we’ll get used to it and I think it will be fine.

For those who don’t know, Kilgrave is the villain of Netflix’s “Jessica Jones.” In the comics, he is the Purple Man who is, quite literally, purple. However, instead of making the character look ridiculous in purple CGI, they went the grounded route and paid homage to the comics by having him wear a purple suit (along with some added visual effects to his powers). That’s something I wish Once had incorporated with Hades. Heck, even a single blue streak in his hair could’ve worked! This just looks childish, stupid, and way too expensive.
Keeper of Thor’s Hammer, Will Scarlet’s Genie Bottle, Emma’s Gun, Emma and Henry’s Moment at the Castle, Cora, and the infamous Family Tree!

I was thinking maybe Hades could have simply worn a blue top hat, as an homage to the blue hair.

I dunno how he was in the comics (apart from what I read on his wiki page when I looked him up out of curiosity while watching the show), but he was done SO WELL in the show, everything about him was ON POINT and he scared me to death.
Heck, even a single blue streak in his hair could’ve worked!
God THIS. Give him a slick, sleazy hairstyle with a bright blue streak in it and call it a day.
That pic of him is…what’s the word I’m looking for…perhaps…ATROCIOUS. I am embarrassed for Greg Germann.
February 4, 2016 at 3:31 pm #316033thedarkonedearieParticipantA blue streak or a blue hat or even just a blue suit would have worked better. I agree. He looks like a Who from Dr. Seuss with a bad dye job.
February 4, 2016 at 4:01 pm #316034WickedRegalParticipantI regret wanting the blue flaming hair now…this had got to be the most ridiculous look on OUAT in a long time.
