It worked for me (which actually surprised me a bit when I realized who they were going with), and one reason was that Ruby, at least, is a character with some rooted history. That made Snow’s support, and Mulan’s, feel more genuine, and tied the relationship into the show a little better. It wasn’t like Hercules and Meg one-off-ness. But it does seem unlikely we’ll see them again.
THOUGH. Wasn’t there mention of a asylum plot in the future? And that bit ties Dorothy’s story to Return to Oz, the movie from the 1980s, so…that…could actually be cool. I dunno.

April 18, 2016 at 4:11 pm #321727PriceofMagicParticipantI dislike the Ruby/Dorothy pairing. There was no chemistry there, it felt so forced, it didn’t feel natural. I think Mulan would’ve been a better fit for Dorothy because they have similar characteristics. Also it’s never been hinted before that Ruby was into women as well as men so the fact that she all of a sudden had feelings for Dorothy seemed a little rush.
I mean I know in real life some people are attracted to the person rather than a gender eg they don’t identify as gay/lesbian or bi but there is a name for it but I can’t think what it is. Anyone know? However, in tv shows, they tend to signpost a little more when a character is interested in both genders or people from both genders. Ruby being interested in Dorothy kind of came out of left field.
On the plus side, I guessed Dorothy was going to be one half of the LGBT relationship when her casting call came out. I just don’t think Red should’ve been the other half. Mulan would’ve been a better fit.
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixApril 18, 2016 at 4:29 pm #321731RumplesGirlKeymasterThe 100 may have killed Lexa, but the development of the romance between her and Clarke (the main protagonist of The 100, in case anyone was wondering) was so fantastically written, and so beautifully acted by two actresses that had more chemistry between their pinky toes than the entire cast of OUAT have ever demonstrated, that I just can’t accept clumsy messes like the lesbian so-called ‘romance’ in this episode anymore.
I didn’t even ship Clexa and I was crying my eyes out…

Demisexual is when you only have attraction to people with whom you share a deep emotional bond.
Pansexuals are those who have attraction to anyone, regardless of gender, sex, or gender identity.

Oh noes! No comment
(but yes, in the most minor way possible.) (at least until this season when I became incredibly frustrated with him though I do think they’ll go that route eventually) (now I’m mostly just like, “plz stop hurting Raven! She is tiny and deserves only good thingsl!”)

I literally just read that and was about to post it myself.
This line in particular: The most beloved pop culture couples are such because the audience gets to watch them fall in love, to see their connection forge, connect, and solidify over long periods of time — or for God’s sake, at least longer than one episode.
I agree somewhat with Keb that Ruby helps sell this marginally but only because we’ve been down many parts with our Wolf Girl and so we trust her emotions, whatever they may be.
This episode and ship, though, feel like it was designed to, at best, appease and, at worst, shut up the queer fanbase. I mean in one breath A and E declare that love is love (yay!) but then have Mulan speak in gender neutral terms–and NOT for the first time this season! You don’t get to claim to celebrate diversity while denying the sexuality of one character multiple times over. It comes off as tone deaf and like you’re only concerned with the buzzworthyness of your show.

As you said elsewhere, the whole pronoun game with Mulan might not even be the writers’ fault, if it’s the result of executive meddling due to Mulan being a Disney princess. This would go beyond A&E’s control. Considering what they allowed Ruby and Dorothy to do and say in this episode, but not Mulan, does make me more suspicious that something fishy is afoot.

Oh my Raven :,(
The thing I’m wondering is: why Dorothy? She could have been used again in some other capacity. If they wanted to do something better they should have had Red and her same-sex lover start off already together, and have Ruby looking for her in the underworld whilst slowly telling the backstory (and maybe save Mulan for another episode), or have her be a werewolf too, so that their instantaneous bonding was more believable.
It would have been more interesting to make Ruby’s lover an anti-hero in the beginning imo, and make her interactions with Ruby be more complicated and flirtatious. Like, for example: Ruby and Mulan have to rid a town of a thief that Ruby starts to fall for, against all of Mulan’s advice, but I suppose that would have needed more than half of one episode to pull off >:I
