In classic ONCE fashion, the Sultan and father of Jafar was revealed to be a rather nasty name who hated Jafar and tried to kill him as a boy. The Sultan also had a son named Mirza who wasn’t really that great either.
What are your thoughts on this family dynamic?

I wonder if there is more to the story between Jafar’s parents that his mother didn’t tell him.

I think there has to be. As Jafar was not the son of the Sultan’s wife there really isn’t a thread to the throne unless Jafar wants to fight for it. Something must have happened.

Answer:
@EvilDearie12 at the very least it has to do with how it would cut out the current heir. Also Ulima was a peasant girl.

If Jafar was the oldest, I wonder if his mom was the Sultan’s true love, but she had no title or money. So he married Mirza’s mom instead because she had money or a title. Maybe Jafar reminds him too much of his love.
Nothing is impossible on OUAT. Everything has a way of repeating itself. Keeper of the Keeper tread: https://oncepodcast.com/forums/topic/official-keeper-thread-3/#post-217924

December 5, 2013 at 9:41 pm #228307RumplesGirlKeymasterWhy would he cut out the current heir? He’s not born of the Sultana. Only “pure” children inherit, no matter if they are older or not.
I still think there might be more to the whole thing.

I do too because why would the Sultan react that strongly against Jafar unless there is more to the story. I hope we get to see that in the future.

@DominicAddams Our Sultan only has one other child, Mirza. #Jafar

I guess this is either a different Sultan than Jasmine’s father, or for some reason Aladdin and Jasmine don’t fit into this story at all.

Ok..so..I’m sorta wondering if Alice and Cyrus are standing in for Aladdin and Jasmine. Not that they ARE them, like a mash up (a la Rumple and the Beast) but rather they represent Aladdin and Jasmine. Alice is the adventurous daredevil who has father issues and Cyrus is this sweet guy she literally runs into one day while running from problems and he shows her the world. Aladdin and Jasmine may appear in ONCE proper, but I think in WL they are standing in for those characters.
