Reading the forums and listening to other oncers I get a mixed response to what people think/feel about Mulan. I have always liked the story of Mulan as well as the disney version of mulan and I have to say that I am not quite sure about what I think of the Mualn character in OUaT.
My first reaction was that she reminded me slightly of the nag with the bad attitude. What are you opions and views on her?

Not so much but it does have me curious as to which direction the writers are going with this. To my recollection, Mulan took her fathers place in the military just to be outcast and finally coming around to help out the people that kicked her out. So, yeah while it (Mulan and Prince Phillip’s story) still doesn’t feel smooth or rather the transition from where she is and where he is as it relates to Sleeping Beauty; I can only imagine how they’ll smooth out the more rougher edges… 😀

I think part of the problem is that the actress playing her did not give a very good performance in her debut episode, imho.

October 2, 2012 at 4:01 pm #155122mujieParticipantI liked her character. Sure, she was suspicious and untrusting, but she must’ve been in love with Prince Phillip for a long time. They were frozen together for 28 years! It takes patience. And Aurora seemed to dislike Mulan from the very beginning I think, so we dislike her. It makes sense that Mulan would fall for Phillip. Most of the princesses in OUaT are strong. And Mulan did want to protect Aurora. She could’ve told her about the mark from the very beginning, but she didn’t.
October 2, 2012 at 4:15 pm #155124faux paxParticipantYou’re right. Philip was supposed to be Aurora’s true love, but the moment she finds out he has been hanging out with another girl she gets snippy. It’s almost like she didn’t trust him or something.
October 2, 2012 at 4:49 pm #155133lilredParticipantI think Mulan and Phillip were (sexually/romantically)together during the 28 year gap. It seems clear that through they were not transported to Storybrooke, they were still effected by the curse. Obviously, the not aging part. But what if they didn’t have their memories either – would explain why Phillip hasn’t managed to save Aurora in 28 years, he didn’t remember her.
Because of that, the Mulan/Phillip/Aurora triangle is a parallel to David/MaryMargarent/Katherine – which also got a lot of hate and was really annoying. As fans that grew up with these stories and already know that A+B = true love, I think that explains the whiplash to some extent. Like Abigail when Snow called her ‘the nag with the bad attitude’, fans were quick to accept that because it was getting in the way of what we knew needed to happen.
I don’t hate Mulan, I think she will grow on me when we see a more dimensional character. I’m not even sure if it’s the acting right now, or that Mulan is trying to come off as strong/emotionless to mask her discomfort in the situation.October 2, 2012 at 7:23 pm #155155dorothyParticipantI like Mulan, but I didn’t like how the writers had her crushing on Prince Philip. He’s supposed to be Aurora’s true love, not Mulan’s. Like what Faux Pax said, the writers almost got the two into a cat fight, and it would honestly cheapen Mulan’s character. She deserves to have a true love that’s 100% hers.
