There is one thing I hope they are not going to though and that is to make her into a typical Chinese character with Kungfu skills. I live in China and get enough of that a it is and it is very stereo typical. I understand she is a soldier/knight, but I really hope yet keep the Kungfu out of it. I haven’t made up my mind yet and seeing all your responses have been very insightful.

I think, maybe Phillip reminds Mulan of ‘her prince’ and that’s why she likes him.

I think Mulan and Phillip were (sexually/romantically)together during the 28 year gap. It seems clear that through they were not transported to Storybrooke, they were still effected by the curse. Obviously, the not aging part. But what if they didn’t have their memories either – would explain why Phillip hasn’t managed to save Aurora in 28 years, he didn’t remember her.
Because of that, the Mulan/Phillip/Aurora triangle is a parallel to David/MaryMargarent/Katherine – which also got a lot of hate and was really annoying. As fans that grew up with these stories and already know that A+B = true love, I think that explains the whiplash to some extent. Like Abigail when Snow called her ‘the nag with the bad attitude’, fans were quick to accept that because it was getting in the way of what we knew needed to happen.
I don’t hate Mulan, I think she will grow on me when we see a more dimensional character. I’m not even sure if it’s the acting right now, or that Mulan is trying to come off as strong/emotionless to mask her discomfort in the situation.JUST re watched the show…. Mulan said they were frozen in time and just got released recently ( probably when Emma came to SB) and were able to resume the hunt. Sleeping Beauty said that she had only been a sleep for a year …. that was probably the pre curse / post curse timing, meaning her story occurred before the curse then got interrupted.
I am not fond of the CHANGING of Mulan’s story. I loved Mulan’s I & II stories and wished they had found a different character to assist Phillip. It goes against grain … I like to think this is a different Mulan as Mulan must be a common name in China. ( That is the only way I can deal with this story line.)
As for this Mulan, I think she is suppose to be “emotionless” as that goes along some of the “warrior” training in some martial art teachings. I also think that emotions on her part might not be reciprocated by Phillip.Anyway this is my take on the story so far…. time will tell.

I was a little thrown by the whole insinuation of a triangle between Mulan/Philip/Aurora. Not sure how I feel about that. I want Mulan with Shang. But I really, really hope we get a Mulan centric storyline this season where we learn how she became a female warrior, where her family is, Shang, etc.
