Oh, no–Cora as in transform herself to look like someone else. She didn’t have that power before the events of Skin Deep (though it looks like she started working on it, given the highlights she was rocking when she met Belle on the road). So anytime before then, we don’t have to ask “is that the Queen in disguise?” After, it’s a possibility, though she doesn’t seem to like that spell as much as her mother did. I don’t think we’ve ever seen Rumple do it at all, though he must have the power if he can teach it…but it’s clear that different magic users favor different spellsets, which makes sense.

…Oh my glob. I had not put 2 and 2 together on the highlights! That is so perfect!

Yeah, I only caught it cuz someone pointed it out on Tumblr. But it is kinda brilliant. We obsess when we think they’ve messed some detail up (*cough curtains cough*) but the creators on this show DO pay attention to details. When stuff is in constant development, with the RL issues of human availability, money, issues with production (like things in the pilot that don’t quite match up–“she thought I was prettier than her”–written long before they knew there would really be a first season) etc etc, there are going to be inconsistencies. But when they get the details right, they REALLY get them right. *adores*

Does anyone else find it perplexing that it takes longer to master the art of giving yourself a dye job than it does to master the art of taking an enchanted heart? Like, I figured the heart thing would be a bit trickier, but Cora learned that overnight, and transformation took her months.

Hm. Magic relies upon emotion. That means that sustaining it might be harder than something instant–and inherently a bit emotion-driven like seizing a heart.

I wonder if it has something to do with the level of magic inherent in each individual. I would guess that Cora had a greater level of magic in her from the start because her emotions tended that way–being a hot head, proud, and slightly…crazy. Whereas Regina started out her life as a very good person who’s emotions tended toward love and kindness. Because her life was easier, it was harder for her to learn magic?

    *think this through*

No. Because he took a heart from the “Esmerelda” looking lady right after she realized Daniel could never be brought back. She was immobilizing horses and then taking lady’s hearts before she became the “Evil Queen”.

    Arg.

Possibly. Or maybe it’s just that Rumple lied to Regina about how hard it was, because if she put the spell on herself, and retained her magic while she was a peasant, things wouldn’t have played out how Rumple needed them to.

Well, if that was the case it might have done her well to have disguised herself a little more while talking to Belle. Not that Rumple needed any kind of description to jump to the conclusion that it was Regina who told Belle about true love’s kiss, but even if Belle had said “The old woman told me” or “the man I met on the road” it would have 1)Possibly made a slight dent in Rumple’s conclusion that it was a trap and 2)put responsibility off of Regina so he would have been more likely to deal with her readily in the future. Still, I think it’s safe to assume that after a few months (if we are to assume that the “promising” maid was indeed Belle) Regina could only manage fabulous highlights.

But I think it’s sort of okay that shape-shifting magic is more difficult because it tends to be a higher level skill (often employed by trickster types) in fairy tales. Plus, it is a… subtle art. (And not without limitations- in general it is impossible to change the look of your eyes) and subtlety isn’t exactly Regina’s strong suit. (Maybe her strong suit is.. hearts! Ahahaha…. I’ll stop now.) I don’t think that it’s a skill that requires more power, but more… finesse.

This is what I meant on creating the timeline in a story format:

This is so much easier to understand in my opinion 🙂

Note: It looks like this person put Robin Hood before the fairy God mother that was killed I guess they don’t know who the wands belongs to either.

Ah. Well, it looks like someone else is doing a story format, so I’ll leave them to it. I personally love excel, but I know it’s not the most user-friendly format for other people. I thought you meant some kind of timeline software or something.

As for the shapeshifting magic…Rumple rarely outright lies. (He does lie sometimes, e.g. Gaston being an old lady selling flowers, but usually his deceptions are omissions, fine print, or playing with words.) I don’t think he would have lied about the difficulty of the spell; he could have gotten what he wanted by just teaching it to her (price for learning it: cut of trade with George; effect: she sees what people really think of her). The only difference would have been her having magic and probably calling off the whole thing earlier. Also, considering that he needs Regina to trust him–just enough–to cast the Curse at that point, he’s not going to risk her learning the spell later and discovering that he was lying about it.

And I do think that holding the shape of another would be more difficult to sustain when magic is powered by emotion. I’m a bit of an emotional person myself, and it’s hard to sustain the extreme emotions for long periods of time (though clearly it gets easier with practice in FTL). Taking a heart, though, is done quickly, and I don’t think we’ve seen anyone do it in an unemotional state.
