ParticipantThis latest trailer has me worried the whole thing will just be the Dorothy X Scarecrow show…
im sure they are a ship in the making.

ParticipantIt is unfortunate that they are having a relationship between Dorothy and the Scarecrow. I am worried that will be the whole show too.

Participantooh I am totally tuning in.
Although, for some reason I feel this show won’t last long.

ParticipantI’m definitely seeing this! I’m sure whatever storyline Dorothy’s having will be good, but I’m most interested in the sisterhood & storyline between North, East, & West!

BlockedYeesh all the reviews for this show from literally every media outlet is really really bad. I doubt this will be around for long.

ParticipantI feel this show won’t last long.
This is supposed to be a one event season series, so will have only this season, that was what was always talked, just like Heroes reborn, one season show.

KeymasterThings that are good
–The visuals of this show are *stunning.* The cinematography is breathtaking; the costumes are gorgeous.
–I like all the inside references to famous Ozian mythology–the rainbow in the window; the flying monkey drone; the poppies that double as the Yellow Brick Road; the witch of the East wearing rubies which Dorothy literally absorbs into her skin.
–I like the idea of a much richer mythology (The Beast Forever; a massive flood) that informs the landscape of Oz that keeps well with Ozian mythology. It’s not just “here there be witches–beware.”
–The Wicked Witch of the East is the instant favorite; I also like the twist that it’s not really magic that kills her, but rather a human made gun with human made bullets.
–Mombi is Petunia Dursley and she’s also keeping a sickly child locked up in a small room. META
Things that are not good
–Dorothy is sadly bland. In the span of five minutes, the show gives her enough backstory to make her sympathetic but not enough to make her feel any less sympathy inducing than any other heroine on TV. I also find it hard to believe that she wouldn’t question her new reality more–you drop from the sky in a car and suddenly there are people talking about beasts and magic and wizards and she accepts it all with little argument or internal conflict.
–This is very Frank L Baum by way of George RR Martin. That’s not exactly a bad thing but it’s like the show wants very badly to be on HBO but had to settle for NBC and broadcast restrictions.
–The Scarecrow tends to mutter a bit. It’s hard to understand him.
A few theories:
–The current Wizard of Oz killed King Pastoria
–The Beast Forever is, yes, water but Dorothy/Ozma will use it for good by killing off the Wicked Witch of the West.
OVERALL: B; good enough for me to watch again next week but still some work to do.

ModeratorI have mixed feelings, but I’m mainly leaning towards meh.
The Pros
– Amazing visuals of Oz. For a network show, I’m impressed. I also liked that they used a lot of real sets and practical effects. I haven’t noticed any groan worthy CGI yet.
– The acting’s not too bad, either.
– The modern spins: For example Dorothy runs over the Witch of the East with her car, the Munchkins are an indigenous tribe, the “Scarecrow” has amnesia, and Dorothy kills the Witch of the East by tricking her into shooting herself.
– I like that they’re using Oz mythology that isn’t just from the Wizard of Oz book or movie, but the other Oz stories. Mombi, “Tip”, and King Pastoria. The Cons
– The writing is the biggest flaw of this show so far. It feels slow and confusing, to the point where I honestly felt these 2 hours were a bit of a slog to get through. I just wasn’t as invested as I would have liked to have been. Unfortunately, I get the impression that many viewers will feel the same way. I can’t see this doing spectacular ratings wise.
– The show feels like it wants to be a Game of Thrones/Lord of the Rings knock-off.
– I agree about Dorothy being pretty bland and could use a lot more development.
– The Witch of the West running a brothel. This was just plain bizarre.I’ll continue watching, but definitely not the biggest fan so far. I’m hoping the later episodes can be improvements.
On a strange note, Dorothy’s town is named Lucas, and she chooses to name the “Scarecrow” after it. Lucas also happens to be Red/Ruby’s last name on OUAT. This has to be purely coincidental, but it’s especially weird when it seems like they’re setting Dorothy and Lucas up as a romantic pairing.

ParticipantNice Things:
Whoever is over the CGI is definetly doing their job.
Oz Lore being mentioned, understood, and used.
I’m actually interested in seeing where the story with Ozma goes!
Ok…I know the show has to follow the books, but I can’t help but feel a little ticked that the Wicked Witch of the East is dead. How she died was a neat twist, but I really wanted to see more of her!!!! 🙁
Glinda & the Wicked Witch of the West have an interesting sisterhood, but it’s definetly believable! Can’t wait to see what happens with them, and really hoping one of them gets the chance to kill the Wizard, who I am definetly not fond of.
Bad Things:
“Mistress”? Really, is that what they call the iconic Witches of Oz?!!!!
Ok…I don’t really know if this is a mini series or an actual series, but it feels as if a bit too much is happening at once. One story is Dorothy & Lucas, next is The Witches of Oz, then there’s the Wizard, then Tip, and then there’s the Guards…it just feels like the story so far is all over the place.
Dorothy…Dorothy…Dorothy…hmmm. It’s not that the character’s bad, but…she’s not really interesting. Hopefully that changes soon!
Ok…I know this is their interpretation of the story, but I just don’t get an Oz feel from this show. It lacks so much magic and wonder that the Land of Oz is supposed to have, at one point I forgot I was watching a story about the Wizard of Oz. The world seems more like a cross over of Star Wars and Game of Thrones….like was that really the Emerald City?!!!
Overall:
Not as grand as I’d hope, but it was interesting enough to make me want to watch the next episode or two.
