I did NOT expect the “Tip is a girl” reveal to happen so early! Apparently, her hair is magical. Also, interesting that they moved them to the east. Jack, by the way, is Tip’s “son,” in the books.
Liked the usage of blue in Munchkinland and yellow in Winkie Country.
Upset at the usage of rubies (instead of silver) and Glinda being in the north (instead of the south).
I did get a sense of the film version of The Wiz, at the beginning, particularly regarding the tornado and the Munchkins.
Also, Boq’s a lot meaner, in this version.
Pregnant nun is clearly a reference to Gregory McGuire’s novels.
Not feelin’ the Scarecrow dude. Or the Dorothy x Scarecrow ship (like, ever).
Pastoria reference! Sounds like he died around the time Dorothy was born. Huh.
Book spoilers below!
Speaking of Pastoria: Tip, you have the farthest thing from “bad” blood, trust me! And I suppose, technically, Mombi was protecting Ozma. From the Wizard. Who wanted her dead, when she was a baby. The monster.[adrotate group="5"]January 7, 2017 at 9:59 am #332468RumplesGirlKeymasterPastoria reference! Sounds like he died around the time Dorothy was born. Huh.
Up until the very last few seconds of the episode, I was convinced Dorothy was Ozma and that Tip was a red herring.

Grim Reaper adds that it’s low but it *could* get renewed so long as it stays around the 1.1/1.0 range.
Were #EmeraldCity ratings to remain at 1.1/1.0 on a Friday in future weeks it’s likely renewed. That’s unusual, but not impossible.

Tin Man kind of did that.

I must honestly say I enjoy the cinematic landscape and colors of EC . That was just beautiful.
EC pique my interest. Its very intriguing and has a lot of plot points and unanswered questions to make me come back. One things for certain I am on this poppy seed yellow brick road to the end. I just have to know how this story plays out!
Dorothy and Scarecrow don’t hate it, don’t love it, but very much okay with it. I honestly have no objections with them becoming a couple in the end. Hey I always thought Dorothy and Scarecrow had a thing so this works. LOL
Dorothy as a nurse I love, her desire to want to help and save really comes through. Her being POC heroine also is a nice touch. But beyond that.. Dorothy is? I agree it appeared she really accepted this world rather quickly. I would be going insane and weeping in a puddle of I just want to go back home. Get me out of this crazy place where people are stuck in tree mud goo.
There is a lot of historical biblical, religious, pagan, political, patriarchy vs matriarchy symbolism going on there. Cross, Beast, Flood, closing of temples, “nuns”, magic vs science, mages, healers, apothecary. It made me think of the Roman Catholic Church absorption of the Celtic Druid culture. All in all that symbolism I found to be very appealing.I love the depiction of the Witches, they lost their power, they want it back. They are so different from each other and far more bonded-connected in their power. Also RIP Wicked Witch of the East, how I wanted more of you.
Tip’s storyline piques my interest the most, I can’t wait to see more of him/her?
The Wizard is just…I do not like him, and I guess that is sort of the point.
There are so many names and characters I am learning, but overall I am enjoying this series. I don’t regret the two hours I spend on this show, and can’t wait to see more. Its dark, its different and simply want to learn the world of EC!
I love world building, I love learning about new species and cultures, and the dynamics of another world. I guess that comes that mini sociologist aspect to my personality.
I have some mild Theories, Dorothy’s is so non baffle because deep down she feels a connection because this is her world. Her bio mother is the missing fourth Witch. Her father is someone from this world as well or maybe not. Crack theory the Wizard is her father, he is from our world . He doesn’t know that she is his daughter. Crack theory two the Guard hunting her is her father.
As for cancellation isn’t it suppose to be a mini series event not an actual show that occurs season to season. I expect it to be what it is, ten episode of escaping into another world and story then chapter closed.

January 7, 2017 at 5:29 pm #332472hjbauParticipantI think the plot of this was interesting, but the characters are not. Dorothy and the Scarecrow were boring characters. The most interesting character was the Wicked Witch of the East and she died. The main actors are just not good enough to carry a show, but NBC keeps stuff around that i am always surprised still exists, so who knows. It may continue.
The second episode was better then the first, so i almost wonder if they had to cut down a longer pilot and that is why the first episode just didn’t work.
January 7, 2017 at 7:38 pm #332473MichaelBlockedI’m not getting too attached to the show. It’s on NBC, it’s ratings for it’s premiere were pretty bad. NBC is ALWAYS happy to cancel any show.
OUAT right now has better ratings then this show that just premiered. What does that tell you? Bash OUAT all you want but it still has an audience.
January 7, 2017 at 8:41 pm #332474Ranisha PittsParticipant@Michael I don’t think this show is suppose to go past one season, Its a mini-series event.
Also not sure what Ouat has to do with it? EC is closer to Game of thrones and Westworld which is the type of the audience I think EC is going for.

January 7, 2017 at 9:13 pm #332475RumplesGirlKeymasterOUAT right now has better ratings then this show that just premiered. What does that tell you?
Well, it has roughly the same. Emerald City got a 1.1/1.0 in the demo (on a Friday 9-10pm) while OUAT mid season finale got a .9 in the demo (on a Sunday primetime) and the average rating for the first 10 episodes of OUAT S6 was a 1.0. EC also had roughly one million more live eyeballs for its premiere than OUAT did for the mid- finale. Just as a comparison, the last well known Friday night NBC show was Hannibal–for its second season finale (which aired on a Friday night, like EC) it got a .8 and had 2.53 million live eyeballs–it went on to get another season.
There are a lot of factors–day of the week, time, seasons, target audience ect. I’m not saying EC did gangbusters and is going to get another season (and like Ranisha already said, it was planned as a miniseries event with one season–option to pick up a second if it did well) but let’s not act like it totally bombed; Friday’s are notoriously tricky which is why their ratings often get a different scale when people discuss how well or how poorly it did. The Grim Reaper even denotes Friday shows on his charts because it’s a factor.
