This is off topic, but i also really liked Westworld. It was harsh, but a really interesting premise. Really good actors too.
YES
If I like the second episode as much, I’m tempted to start a thread on it so everyone can discuss.

I actually thought the second episode was, in some ways, even better than the premiere. So far what I like the most about that show is that it both seems to work with familiar stereotypes, and yet subvert them in really interesting and unexpected ways.

I liked the show / plot and the characters but the commercials ruined everything. DH was not happy with the show so not sure how much longer we will watch. He will wait until the DVD is available or check it on line.

I thought the moral complexity of saving Lincoln vs not saving Lincoln was exactly what the show should have been exploring in this episode so bravo to them. Rufus got some nice moments trying to explain why it was so important to save Lincoln.
A few notes
–So my current theory is that Flynn is from the far future; sometime past 2016 when America has pretty much imploded into a post apocalyptic hellscape. His conversation with Lucy was pretty impassioned that he’s trying to SAVE America, not end it. I just don’t get why these events, why change these things
–Really nice hook at the end that Lucy’s dad was never biological father. So who is it? That’s a mystery that they’re clearly building up to a big shock.
–Fiancee: someone we need to monitor?
–Rat Pack next week!
–Who are Rittenhouse?

I’m getting the sense that it’s exactly the plot of Back to the Future, only this time Marty is the bad guy.

I don’t remember that film well. Do you mean in the sense that main antagonist is possibly the main protagonist’s biological progenitor and the story will become about ensuring that the main character doesn’t cancel herself out of existence?

It looks like it’s inverting the things that we’d typically consider “bad” events in history, that, should they have not taken place, put society on a much different (and presumably better) course. I do wonder about the periodization. So far the historiography is pretty exclusively Euroamerican. Flynn is not going around trying to screw up, say, European colonialism. Also, I wonder how far back he’s able to venture, and whether there is a technological limit to that. One presumes that the further back you go, the more “payoff” there might be in terms derailing the course of things.

Not exactly. I’m wondering if Flynn is Lucy’s son from an alternate future, and that the big changes he’s making to history are just incidental to his real goal of getting his parents together.
I think Flynn-as-Marty would be too derivative to take completely seriously, but the show has a lighter side that I wasn’t expecting from the previews, so I think it could manage an old plot done differently.

Right! Like find a way to sink the Mayflower or find a way to prevent the American Revolution.
