Rumpel is a coward. He went to war and he ran and people died. He didn’t trust Bae and let go of his hand and Bae fell through the vortex by himself. He didn’t trust Belle and screamed at her, threw her to the floor, and then got rid of her. It isn’t just Rumpel’s wife that called him coward. Everyone calls him coward because he is one. That will be his arc. At some point he needs to learn to not do something so cowardly in those big important moments in his life.
That is the most interesting thing about his story, is whether or not he can learn to do the right thing, because as of now, he doesn’t.
And, for me, when Rumpel said she’s dead, i thought he was saying i killed her. But i totally agree that they could leave it like it is. They don’t need to do more there though they could if they want. Especially if Bae ends up not actually being Rumpel’s son.

I can’t stand the thought of Bae’s mother leaving him out of boredom. That poor kid just can’t catch a break. 😥

That’s what I’m thinking. They already hinted at the possibility of Bae not really being Rumple’s kid, and they already hinted at what happened between Rumple and his wife. They don’t need to drag her out and actually show her leaving to get the point across.
Besides, leaving your spouse out of boredom is way different than leaving them because they deserted the army. Leaving out of boredom is pretty self-explanatory. You’re bored and there’s nothing else going on. A bored housewife ditching her family sounds more like something an incredibly selfish person would do if you ask me. Leaving your spouse because they abandoned the army during wartime sounds like the complete opposite. Someone who would do that probably felt that their spouse had committed the ultimate act of disgrace.
I don’t see how there is any way this new character could be Rumple’s ex-wife. It’s probably because we all love Rumple’s character so much that it’s easier to think that his ex-wife must’ve been a shallow, self-serving woman.

Why would they bother hinting at those things if there wasn’t more to the story that they planned to flesh out in a later episode though? They could have made it straightforward, she could have died or left when Bae was old enough to remember it happening, and there didn’t have to be a question of paternity at all. I think they put that stuff in there for a reason, coz there’s more of that story to be told.
July 28, 2012 at 12:58 pm #152642hjbauParticipantThat is sort of how i feel as well. They hinted that Rumpel wasn’t really Bae’s father. And they hinted that something happened to the wife. So it does make me think that they are going to go into that more. Though i do think they could just leave it and not actually show the character and instead just have Rumpel talk to say Bae about what happened to his mother.

That’s what I think too, Phee. They did basically did the same thing with Bae’s story by having Rumple tell Belle that he lost his son in “Skin Deep”, and then we found out in “The Return” how Rumple lost Bae, and how Rumple trying to reunite with his son has driven most of the events of the show. So I think they’ll do something with Rumple’s wife too otherwise they could have just said that she died instead of making it a mystery of what happened to her too.

I know! If Milha is Bae’s mom, I feel even sadder for poor Bae and his terrible life, but that could be another reason that they want to set up Milha being his mom, so that we root for him to have a happy life whenever he comes back onscreen especially for me assuming he’s Henry’s father and Emma’s true love. Plus, it seems like Emma is going to have issues with reuniting with her parents, but perhaps Bae could help her realize that she could have had it much worse that her parents actually could have abandoned her because of their own selfishness like his parents did to him, so her situation looks a lot better considering Snow and Charming were trying to protect her.
I don’t think that Milha being Bae’s mother, who ran off with Hook, would have to mean that Bae had a link to Neverland, (and by the same token I don’t think she’d have to have any link to Whale if he ended up being Peter).
True, they do like to mix everyone around. I just don’t want to get too attached to Milha being Rumple’s ex theory, but right now she’s the only female character that we know of that would fit being Milha. Of course, it’s possible that Milha could be someone entirely new that we’ve never got any hint of before.
They’ll have to have some Rumbelle stuff early on in the season. If the first few eps deal with the overall catchup of what’s going on in Storybrooke, by ep 4, they could get stuck into some Rumbelle storyline if it’s a parallel to his former life with his wife in the flashbacks.
That reminds me. I was thinking that Belle agreed to go with Rumple because she wanted to see the world and because she wanted to show that she was brave. So in one way, Belle and Milha are similar in that they both wanted to see the world, but at least on paper right now, it seems like Milha was very cowardly for leaving her son. Of course, I don’t want to paint her as a bad character yet because I don’t know how bad her life may have been like it’s possible that she was suffering from depression or something to cause her to want to run away really badly.
July 28, 2012 at 1:12 pm #152645hjbauParticipantThis Milha character probably is no one is the thing. Like the mute maid. Everyone thought that the mute maid might be the Little Mermaid and then she was no one, just a character for Rumpel to murder. This Milha may just be a side character that nothing really comes of. I actually think that is most likely the case.

July 29, 2012 at 8:26 am #152660PheeParticipantI just don’t think they’d introduce another character with a name so similar to Baelfire, (I mean, Beaman…”bay-man”, “bay-l-fire”, that can’t be coincidence, of ALL the names they could have chosen for this new guy), and also introduce an unhappy housewife who runs away in that same ep, if there wasn’t meant to be a connection to Bae and Rumple’s backstory. There’s every chance I’m off the mark, (wouldn’t be the first time), but IMO all the pieces fit pretty much perfectly.
July 29, 2012 at 3:27 pm #152665SlurpeezParticipant@Phee: I share your assessment; the names Baelfire and Beaman just sound so similar to my ears when said aloud. There is probably some connection. Either Beaman could be related to Baelfire or Beaman is Baelfire but with a different alias.
