Interesting article that came out yesterday, the 5th of February. Soooo….coincidence? Also, this serves as a nice refresher of the classic Greek tale in anyone needs one.

Old Disney animations are always kind of creepy and disturbing.

All magic comes with a price!

They actually talked about this in the Snow White special.

Interesting that another name for Persephone is Cora.

In Ancient Greek, Kore (K, not C, not really a C in Ancient Greek) simply means “maiden” hence it’s tie to Persephone, a maiden abducted. Cora (our Queen of Hearts) gets her name from the more appropriate Greek word “kardia (kardias)” the noun word for heart which gets passed off to Latin, the mother of all romantic languages, as “Cor”

I rather doubt that A and E are experts in linguistics so it wouldn’t totally surprise me if they try to tie Cora (our Queen) into this myth somehow, though I think she might play a more Demeter role than the actual Persephone.

K & H may not be linguists but Jane Espenson is. We’ve known for a long time that Cora can walk the Underworld. That’s enough to keep me looking for connections. I don’t see Demeter though. She was the goddess of grain and her followers were baptized in bovine blood. Cora is known as the Miller’s daughter. That does make for an interesting connection between her and Persephone. Persephone’s mom is Demeter the Goddess of Grain. Cora’s father is the one that crushes grain into flour.

Sort of looks like a mashup of Mr. Spock and Darth Vader.

The connection to Demeter doesn’t need to be to what Demeter was “goddess of” but what her story is–the mother who lost her child to the god of the Underworld and the lengths the mother goes to to protect said child. I’d say more but…well, I’ve seen the premiere 😉

But yes, I agree that Cora could work as a stand in for Persephone. Just depends on which direction the story goes.
