We’ve seen these two paralleled and contrasted a lot, and it’s been said in the podcasts that secretly Rumple kind of wants to be Charming.
Right now, Rumple’s in a very similar situation to Charming in a lot of ways–
–Both are trying to reconnect with a child that they sent to another world long ago
–Both are suddenly grandfathers to Henry
–Both are dealing with a True Love in crisis (and Belle’s crisis parallel’s Snow’s when she took the potion and forgot Charming in FTL, right down to TLK not solving the issue right away)
And going off that, I found myself wondering whether it was David’s argument or Henry’s that finally persuaded Gold to protect Mary Margaret. David’s good–I think he gets Gold’s psychology better than anyone else, at least on some level (Cora might have really understood Dark One Rumple at his worst, but David knows what makes late FTL Rumple and now SB Gold tick). But when Henry said “You used to be heroes. What happened to you?” I think that may have affected Gold a bit, too, even though he wasn’t the one that Henry was addressing. Yes, he owes MM big time–David’s right, and Gold doesn’t like to be in debt to anyone. But maybe part of him wants to be the hero, too. He did stay, though it’s clear that a) he’s not especially welcome thanks to what he got MM to do and b) he’s got other things he feels he needs to do (like solving his Belle problem or getting back on speaking terms with Bae).[adrotate group="5"]

I really loved the bits between Charming and Rumple. I think there is potential there for Rumple to have an actual friend. He’s got two people in his life that he flat out loves, Belle and Bae. Beyond that he’s very much alone. He rejects this new family because I think it’s a bit too much for him to take, but I can him warming up to charming and becoming best frienemies. Remember when he asked Charming for dating advice? 😆"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 18, 2013 at 1:10 pm #180678spinninggoldParticipant
Rumpel always has wanted to be a hero… and almost was at one point. When he went to war he did so to prove hmself. When he took the Dark Ones powers, he did so out of the best of intentions. When he defeated the ogres, he actually was a hero for 5 minutes, before he started killing everyone that looked at him. He has aweful good intentions… which always end up awefully bad. Partly that is the Dark One corrupting him, and the other part is his own fear. He is terribly protective about those he loves, and that part is actually good in him… but the way he goes about it, drives those he loves away.
And then there is this fear of death he has. Which is human, but the Dark One magnifies it. As human he did not have the power to do something about it, but as Dark One… They saying goes: Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. And that s so true for Rumpel.
I think… and hope he can’t kill Henry. I think part of him loves Henry and has loved him from the start. Knowing he is blood should stop him. But then there is this survival instinct, which is magnified by the Dark One. I have to believe that pure Rumpel would have given up his magic no problem to follow Bae, but that it was the Dark one that stopped him. The dark one is an entity too after all, and faced with it’s own destruction it will fight back. Question will be when it is time to kill Henry, who of them is stronger. Rumpel or the Dark One?
Now I don’t think they will kill Henry… Disney might approve of a Dark Snow, but killing children? That would be a bridge too far. But Rumpel’s character strength lies in his dual nature, and if you destroy the Dark One… Rumpel would eventually become happy. Belle and Bae would love him. And like Adam already said, that’s not much of a story… Not enough story to smear out over 7 seasons.March 18, 2013 at 1:16 pm #180679RumplesGirlKeymaster
Very good points SpinningGold. I don’t think he’ll kill Henry either, though I think he’ll be sorely tempted in order to save his own skin. I do think he wants to be the hero. Before he became the Dark One, when he was plotting to become him, he told Bae “can you imagine me with those power Bae? I could turn it towards good.” He does have the best of intentions most of the time (let’s never forget, the entire drama undercutting this entire series is one father searching for his son). And I think having a friend like Charming will reinforce that desire to be the hero and help him choose the better path."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"March 18, 2013 at 5:41 pm #180716ser_dragonParticipant
I don’t think Rumpel and Charming can and will be friends. Charming dislike Rumpel or despise him with reason.
He rejects this new family because I think it’s a bit too much for him to take,
Not really for me. He reject it because he is selfish. It’s not too much for him to take. After being alone for so long, don’t you think he would happily accept to be part of the family? Yet he don’t. Or maybe it’s because he really is stupid. After all scheming doesn’t necessarily imply intelligence.March 18, 2013 at 6:13 pm #180721KebParticipant
I’m not sure he’s rejecting his new family–I just think he’s not sure how to take it. First of all, his connection to the Charmings is Henry, and right now he firmly believes that Henry is going to be his undoing, which scares him. He’s still a coward. Also it’s all really new, this idea of actually having family.
And his history with them is, um, complicated. He traded David’s twin away at birth, and then traded David away and almost got him killed, then roped into an arranged marriage, then the target of a really mad King George. He taught Cora and then Regina magic (which they may not know), helping to corrupt them, which had a lot to do with Snow’s misery, and got Regina to cast the Curse that separated their family for 28 years (which at least Regina knows full well). Oh, and while he helped bring them together (the ring to find Snow, for example, or telling Charming she was after the Queen), he also gave Snow the potion to forget Charming and sent Charming to fight a dragon. The stuff they directly experienced from him was a bit like working with Jack Sparrow–whose side is he even on? And just before the curse they were more than happy to help Cinderella lock him up, as a dangerous being who caused too much harm. (Yeah, his grandson’s other grandparents are the people who dared to try to trick him and lock him in a prison–whether or not he actually wanted to be there.) And first thing he does when he gets magic back? He summons a wraith that wrecks the town and almost kills Henry’s mother, resulting in Emma and MM getting trapped in FTL for a few weeks. He -is- dangerous and occasionally unhinged. They’re right to be a bit circumspect about him. MM even said she could let him die and kill two evils with one stone.
While I don’t think they hate each other–they wouldn’t have tried to save him, putting their own lives and souls on the line against Regina and Cora if they did–they don’t exactly like, let alone love, each other. And now David knows full well that Rumple got Snow to help kill Cora on his behalf, which is why he was so angry when Rumple showed up at their door. He wasn’t even entirely gracious about helping them out despite the obvious debt he owes that branch of his family now. Oh, and he was in such a hurry to leave that he left MM alone long enough for her to go surrender to Regina, which isn’t going to exactly improve David’s opinion of him.
I expect that they will one day reconcile, but he’s gonna have to earn a lot of brownie points in the meantime. Right now, he’s not even sure how much he wants to be part of that family–he clearly never saw that in a vision, because he was as shocked to be related to Henry as everyone else was about it. I think he likes them–Henry is among the only people he’s ever freely given something to, he respects Emma and David in ways that he respects very few people (he’s actually willing to go to them when he needs help), and of course he loves his son. But I don’t think he knows what to do with this new relationship quite yet because it’s something he hasn’t really had–his dad apparently ran out on him, he was raised by spinsters (suggesting that they were not so much a family unit somehow, just int he phrasing of the Seer), Milah hated him as soon as his son was born, and he never had a family after that. Like Emma, he’s not used to anyone putting him first.
