If his SB personality is the opposite of his true personality and character from FTL, then I believe he is Robin Hood. If his personality and character are the same in both SB and FTL, then I believe he is Captain James Hook.

Dr. Whale sounded like Irish or something at one point. Is that relevant to the character? There was just some accent going on at one point. It may be nothing. It isn’t as if accents have been consistent.

That, and his last name possibly being a derivative of Wales is why I tied him into the druids or the Sword and the Stone. I would really love a first name to also work from.

I too have been wondering about Captain Hook. Robin Hood also popped up in my mind. Yet, I thought I read somewhere that Dr. Whale is an evil character. Robin Hood was good, but the sheriff of nottingham could be a choice.

There has to be some connection with the accent and Irish / English hertiage possibly found in his last name. I did a search on line, and found a connect with his last name to a ruin circle, hence why I was thinking druids. Druids can shapeshift (might be why he seems drawn to Ruby) and are also healers. But I am having a hard time coming up with evil druid characters.

Besides meaning a large water mammal, whale can mean:
    unfortunately, a big person
to hit someone or something hard and repeatedly
or as in the phrase “we had a whale of time…”

    Maybe he’s Gulliver

Kalliope: Mordred from the Arthurian legend is evil and a druid (if my memory serves me correctly)

He did appear unsettled in the season finale …. I’m not sure what type of fairy tale character he may be and how that will have an impact on some of our main characters, but that’s what makes this show so appealing.

I had a theory once that he may be Zobo’s (the other dark ones) son who is out to seek Gold for revenge.

Happened to catch the end of “The Shepherd” on tv here tonight and seeing that scene again with MM and Dr Whale made me extra curious as to who he is.

My personal theory was that he was Regina’s minion when she became Ursula, (if that even happens), but I also kinda like a Gulliver theory that I’ve seen mentioned in a couple places.

    From wikipedia:

According to Swift’s novel, Gulliver was born in Nottinghamshire c. 1661, where his father had a small estate; the Gulliver family is said to have originated in Oxfordshire, however. He studied for three years (c. 1675-1678) at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, leaving to become an apprentice to an eminent London surgeon; after four years (c. 1678-1682), he left to study at the University of Leiden, a prominent French medical school. He also educated himself in navigation and mathematics, leaving the University around 1685.

Not sure how they’d work in Gulliver being tied to EQ in FTL though, which I’m assuming they will be, because they appear to be close associates in SB too.

Good catch Phee. I will have to read / research the Gulliver Tales. I remember them, but not well enough.

ok maybe I am crazy but seeing as how we did not know that Jiminy cricket was not always a cricket until the episode that still small voice I think there is still a very good possibility that Dr. Whale is in fact Monstro and that he was not always a whale…Maybe Regina turned him into one and that is why he is always reporting to her in SB..Plus think about it… we have now officially met all the “good” characters from Pinocchio, but what about the villains? There are more than one in that story though Monstro is the scariest and we know nothing about his possible backstory…and if Regina turned him into a whale since the shows creators have already mentioned they are hoping to introduce Ariel into the next season and the EQ’s remark about a mermaid in Skin Deep could he not help out or serve as a sort of go between for EQ and Ursula…There is so much potential with Monstro because there is virtually no backstory on him…Maybe there is a reason why Gepetto ended up inside him…endless possibilities which would make him a very useful villain for the writers…but hey just a theory.. 😀

I wish that they could have had Jiminy’s parents be the ones that tricked Pinocchio, but that wouldn’t work because of the time difference.

I had kind of wanted that too..but they would have had to have someone replace jiminy to pick pockets for them and they probably would have gotten some orphan to do it for them who could very well wind up being Stromboli…that would be fun!
