It Excalibur and the dagger are reunited they snuff out the dark magic AND the light magic. Did Merlin (or whomever forged the blade) intend that? Who broke the dagger in the first place? And should all magic be eradicated–losing the light in order to defeat the dark?

I think Merlin was the original creator of magic, and then when it destroyed his one true love(I think the Dark One we saw), I think he held a grudge against his own creation and set out to destroy it.
