One of the more interesting reveals happened to be that the show might not focus on the usual heroes known for battling Captain Hook, but rather the beginnings of the fairy who has become a Disney icon. “There is a chance we’ll see Peter Pan, Wendy and/or… [dramatic pause] Tinker Bell,” Kitsis says. “I would say that a story like Tinker Bell’s deserves its own origin story”.

April 6, 2013 at 5:46 pm #184707angiebelleParticipantThat isn’t just Disney- that mythology goes all the way back to the original Peter Pan story. “When the first child laughed for the first time, that laugh broke into a million pieces and they all went skipping about. And that was the beginning of fairies. “

In Secret of the Wings we also discover that Tinker Bell has a twin sister, that was born of the same child's laugh
I am really interested in seeing what H & K are going to do with the Tinker Bell story!Proud Keeper of the Dinglehoppers

I am really interested in seeing what H & K are going to do with the Tinker Bell story!I kind of think they won’t play off Disney Fairies franchise mythology because it is too new or not well known enough by the average person, so will stick to creating their own OUAT twist on the common lore developed by Barrie/Disneys Peter Pan movie.
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?” -- Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

That’s what I was thinking too, until AngieBelle said that the in the original peter pan story fairies were born from a child’s laugh too. So although they might not specifically be following Disney Fairies, there could be similarities due to them both being based off the original Peter Pan.
And What we learned in Secret of the Wings (that Tinker Bell had a twin) could make an awesome twist to come up in later seasons 😀Proud Keeper of the Dinglehoppers

They actually took this from an interview TV Guide did back in September:

April 6, 2013 at 8:03 pm #184729HappyEndingsSpectatorBeyond magic, and the romance alluded to in the other post, the showrunners were asked about when The Little Mermaid’s Ariel might finally make an apparance. “Probably not this season,” Kitsis admits. “We’ve taken a lot of toys off the shelf, so we’re probably not going to see her this year. We do have a plan for her, if there is a Season 3.”
April 6, 2013 at 8:16 pm #184732RumplesGirlKeymaster1) There will be a season 3. Stop being coy, Eddy.
2) YES! She’s definitely in Mermaid Lagoon!
3) Hopefully their plans for her are more than just a one time episode.
